“And today,
astronomers expectantly wait to observe the solar flare which should occur in two
hours and fifteen minutes. Three new satellites haven pen put into orbit to
conduct various analyses on the solar event…”
The
newscaster drawled on and on while the only people who were paying attention
were Ororo, Professor Xavier, and Jean. They, apparently, found it
fa
fascinating, while everyone else just continued on about their day. Or, what
there was of it. Summer vacation had just started and everyone was feeling more
or less bored. In the next few days, students would be leaving to go home to
their families. Among them, Kitty, Jean, Evan, Jubilee, and many others. The
only students left would most likely be Rogue, Scott, and Kurt. Of the three,
Kurt actually had a home to go home to, but he felt it was just too costly to
take the trip to Germany more than once a year, which he did at Christmas.
They were
all sitting around doing nothing. Kurt was hanging upside down with his tail
wrapped around the chandelier when he voiced what everyone else was thinking.
“Zis is so boring…” He sighed and jumped down from the lighting fixture. In
midair, he bamfed out and was then seen sitting on the arm of the couch next to
Bobby. “Scott, can’t ve go do somezing? You have the wheels.” Kurt begged.
Scott
grimaced at the mention of his car, his baby. “I told ya, my car’s down
for the count. Mr. McCoy said he’d take a look at her, but until then…” he
trailed off.
“Ah, man…!”
Kurt exclaimed. He fell back down onto the couch and laded on his back. His
image-inducer bumped Bobby’s leg and switched off. At the sight of Kurt’s tail, bilebilee got an evil smirk on her face and reached for it.
“Yow!
Jubilee, you are SO dead!” Kurt screamed as her bamfed to a standing position
in front of her. She yelped and crawled to a standing position on the couch,
then jumped sideways to land on the floor. She took off at a run and headed
straight for the front doors.
It seemed
Bobby and Jaime decided to get in on the action. Bobby iced the sidewalk that
the stairs outside the front door touched. As soon as Jubilee jumped off of the
stairs, she went skating across the ice like a re sre skater out of control.
When she reached the edge, she bumped into four Jamies who grabbed her arms.
With a flick of her hands, she sent streamers of energy into them and sent them
flying. Then she sent more streamers into the ice, shattering it and sending it
up into the air, temporarily blinding the boys chasing her.
She yelped
again as, once more, Kurt bamfed in front of her. “No escape for you, mein
freund. He made to grab her, butteadtead grabbed at empty air. He watched as
she went skidding backwards on the ice, landing on her ass and continuing to
slide. She waved as she reached the other side of the driveway and got to a
standing position.
“Gotta
catch me first!” She called to him. She went jogging off while Kurt smirked. I
should’ve seen that one coming, he thought. He bamfed after her again, and
when he got close enough to her, she turned around to blow him a kiss of
dazzling energy. It hit him re ire in the chest, but it wasn’t enough to hurt
him; it just threw him off balance and knocked him backwards. He used his tail
to push off the ground to right himself before he hit it, and then kept on
after the girl.
As he was
chasing her, now through the dense trees of the mansion’s lawn, he saw Scott
through the corner of his eye standing on the front steps watching with some
amusement. I guess it’s not so boring anymore…God bless that girl.
They
continued on chasing Jubilee through the yard for a long time until Jean came
to the door and called, “Hey guys! Come here for a little bit!”
Everyone
ran up to the mansion and stopped in front of Jean. “What is it?” Jubilee
asked.
“Professor
Xavier asked me to get you guys. There was something he wanted you all to see.”
She responded. She led them back into the living room to the professor, who was
sitting in front of the television.
‘Everyone,”
he said, smiling. “I wanted you to see this on television.” He gestured to the
screen, which displayed an image of the Sun through some kind of telescope. The
picture was a little fuzzy, but that was to be expected.
Scott
looked intently at the screen, then asked the professor, “Is that the solar
flare they were talking about earlier?”
“Yes.” He
responded. “Ororo?”
Storm turned
to the students and explained, “A solar flare, or a solar prominence, is ewhaewhat of a common occurrence. However, the predicted magnitude of this one
is such that it is expected to terminate all electrical devices fifty miles
north and south of the equator on the side of the Earth facing the Sun.”
“Can they
really do that?” Bobby asked.
“Oh, yes.”
The professor replied. “Solar flares emit strong bursts of solar radiation that
can cause interference with mechanical devices. The Sun constantly emits such
radiation, but the atmosphere filters most of it out, so we cannot analyze it
very effectively.”
“Hey,
everyone, look!” Jean called. She was pointing at the television where a stream
of fiery energy could be seen jumping from one spot on the Sun to another.
Sunspot was
standing near them and, as he gazed intently at the screen, exclaimed, “This is
so awesome! It’s like I can feel the flare!”
Xavier
turned around and studied him intently. “Can you really feel that?”
Sunspot blinked,
then said, “Yeah, it’s like…oh no…” He looked up from his hands to the
television.
Everyone
looked back to the screen just as he did and saw that another flare was
erupting from the Sun’s surface. This flare was much larger than the first and
a lot brighter.
“It’s
like…a chain reaction. Something big is happening!” Sunspot said. He continued
to watch as yet as third and fourth flare ignited, each one growing in
magnitude.
Suddenly, a
siren went off somewhere in the mansion.
A computerized, feminine voice said above everyone’s concerned shouts,
“Warning, theta radiation detected. Three hours until lethal exposure.”
Professor
Xavier’s face grew very concerned. He moved his wheelchair over to a computer
console and quickly tapped a complicated series of buttons. “Oh my god…”
“Professor,
what if I use my powers? I can shield us from the radiation right?” Jean asked.
“It’s worth
a try. But it’s not just the mansion. It’s everywhere. The entire planet is
feeling the effects of the radiation. Perhaps with your powers working in
tandem with Sunspot’s here, you two could fend off the solar radiation.”
“Yes, sir!”
Jean and Sunspot chorused together. And with that, a bright flash of light
spread through the mansion.
“Okay, who
did that?” Scott called, but then stopped abruptly. His eyes began to itch
relentlessly. Maybe it’s the radiation…it must be doing something to my eyes
because of my mutation. He looked around and, with a tint of red, saw all
of his friends, his teammates, fall to the ground. As he watched with horror,
his world faded from red to black as he too fell to the ground, his ruby-quartz
sunglasses slipping from his face.
Sitting up,
Scott’s first instinct was to open his eyes. When he did so, he saw a myriad of
colors, most of which were NOT red, with the exception of Jean’s hair. He
looked down and saw his sunglasses on the floor. He freaked out and reached his
hand up to his face to stop his eyes from blowing a hole through the wall by
sending his friends flying through it but nothing catastrophic was happening.
He stood up as some of his other friends were struggling around the room and
looked into a mirror.
His brown
eyes stared back at him and he gasped. He turned around and heard a few gasps
as well. Kurt was staring at him as he said, “Your eyes…they’re brown…” And
then the thoughts slammed into him.
What’s
happening?… How could this be?… I’m scared…Why aren’t my powers working?… Mt
head hurts…Oh my god! I’m phased into the floor!…What the Hell?!? I’m blue and
furry!…Help me! I’m on fire!
At the last
two thoughts, he glanced up and saw standing in the corner a blue and furry
GIRL who looked a lot like Kurt, but was unmistakably Rogue because of the
white streak at the front of her now blue hair. Next to Rogue stood Kitty, whose
arms were on fire, but not hurting her in any way. The expression on her face
was one of shock, but not pain. With some concentration, the flames went out by
themselves leaving Kitty her normal self again.
Scott did a
quick once over on the rest of the team. Aside from some confusion everyone
else seemed normal. Then he saw Kurt. He looked normal. Not normal for Kurt,
but normal for everyone else. But, the professor said that the radiation
interferes with electrical devices. Shouldn’t his image-inducer…? And
that’s when he saw it. Laying on the floor about two feet to Kurt’s right lay
his image-inducer smashed into bits. Wait a minute…Rogue, Kitty , Kurt, and…
His thoughts trailed off as more voices screamed into his head. It was like he
was picking up on everyone’s thoughts in the room, almost like he was a
telepath.
Thinking of
the word telepath, he looked around for Jean. Along with him, she was a source
for order among the team of mutants. When he finally spotted her, she was
pushing herself up off the floor and opening her eyes. The first tip off as to
what happened to her was the red glow, the second was the rays of crimson light
that flew from her eyes and blasted the wooden door leading into the dining
room into toothpicks. She immediately closed her eyes and screamed, then stood
aelt elt her way around while keeping her eyes closed and shielded by her arm.
Scott
thought of his glasses and went to pick them up. He ran to Jean and slipped the
sunglasses onto her panicked face.
“Jean, open
your eyes.” He said.
She opened
them and fully realized what had happened to her when she saw the world bathed
in red. “Scott, what’s happening to us?” She asked worriedly.
“So, we’ve
made a list of the switches here on the computer.” Ororo said, pointing towards
the screen. Apparently, it hadn’t just been the mutants in the X-mansion that
had experienced the power switch, but some of the powers of the Brotherhood
mutants seemed to be present as well. The younger mutants crowded in and looked
at the screen that read:
Mutant Name New Powers
Professor Xavier Shadowcat
Ororo Munroe Boom-Boom
Logan Jean Grey
Scott Summers Professor X
Jean Grey Cyclops
Kurt Wagner Avalanche
Rogue Nightcrawler
Kitty Pryde Sunspot
Bobby Drake Berserker
Jubilation Lee Mystique
And
the list continued, naming every mutant in the mansion and which powers they
had. It was obvious that the power switch wasn’t exactly equal. That is, not
everyone switched powers in pairs. Though some of them appeared to have
switched powers with each other, Rogue obtained Kurt’s powers and Kurt reed
ed
Lance Alver’s powers, but Rogue’s powers were yet to be found. Also, some of
the powers put restrictions on some of them. For example, Wolverine could not
use his claws anymoecauecause if he retracted them, their exit points would not
heal. Rogue could not be allowed to leave the house without an image-inducer
which would take a while to make, and which they did not have the time to deal
with at the moment. And Scott was having constant headaches from not being able
to shut out the thoughts that were hurtling themselves into his brain.
“We still
have to go forward with our plan, but it is going to be difficult. Kitty,
Logan, we’ll need to begin training you two immediately to use your new powers.
We must be able to get you two to focus enough to carry through with the plan.”
Professor Xavier explained. He took them both to the danger room to practice
while the other students were left to try to not blow up the mansion.
“Zis is so
weird!” Kurt said. “But cool!” He amended. He was looking down at his hands and
marveling at how they not only looked normal, but felt normal too. He could,
for the first time, use all five fingers.
“Yeah,
maybe for you, but I can’t get these thoughts out of my head. I don’t know how
you can deal with it, Jean!” He said to her. She glanced up from her book and
he could imagine the look she threw at him.
“It takes a
degree of discipline. What I don’t know is how you can deal with seeing the
world this way! I mean, I’m starting to get sick of the color red! In fact, I’m
going to dye my hair after this is all over. What do you guys think of me as a
blonde?” Jean asked.
Jubilee
smiled and shape-shifted into Jean, except she had blonde hair. “You guys tell
me? How do I look as blonde-Jean? Think she should go through with it?”
Scott
looked at her and admitted she did look good as a blonde. However, “Jubilee,
how do you have that much control already?”
She
shrugged and said, “I dunno…it’s pretty easy. I mean, I just have to
concentrate on an image hard enough and my body just does the rest.”
“Cool!
Do me! Do me!" Kurt shouted. Oh my god, double entendrés... He had to
shout because he was still on the other side of the
room staring into the mirror. “Hey, wait a minute, if you got Mystique’s
powers, I wonder whose she got?” Kurt questioned.
“If there’s
such a thing as karma,” Scott said, “then it was either Toad or Blob.” At that
he got a round of laughs from the entire group. Kurt sat down on the couch nexo hio him, finally bored of just staring into the mirror, and punched him in the
arm.
“Hey, good
one, Brownie!” He said. At Scott’s questioning gaze, Kurt elaborated, “Well,
you’re eyes are brown, so I just thought…” Indeed, they are brown…very
beautifully so.
Scott’s
insides jumped at the thought that popped into his head, unmistakably in Kurt’s
voice, but did not betray that he heard Kurt’s thoughts. Instead he smiled and
said, “No, it’s okay. In fact, I think it’s kinda cute.” He smiled at Kurt and
thought about maybe asking to talk to him in private when the computerized
voice stopped him.
“Warning,
