Time (Hour Glass)
“I really don’t know why I even gave him the time of day,” Ororo said as she eyed herself in Jean’s bathroom mirror. She looked at her hair and frowned at the plain straight white locks.
“He is cute.” Jean shouted from the joined walk-in closet,” He might just be what you’re looking for, Ororo. It is after all only a date.”
Ororo then turned from the mirror and smirked over her shoulder,” And just ‘what’ must I be looking for?”
“A man of course.”
“I’m not in need of a man, Jean. My life is….”
“Not complete!” Jean immediately interrupted,” You need someone Ororo. Someone that will give you everything that you deserve.”
And before Ororo could ask just what it was that ‘she’ deserved Jean answered her,” You know you want children with someone. A man to smile every time he sees you, someone to hold your hand and listen to you when something’s bothering you. Someone to make you feel safe, protected, cherished…”
“Jean, what are you talking about?” Scott called as he entered the bathroom.
“She sounds like a romance novel, does she not?” Ororo giggled softly.
Jean shoots her a quick snarl before returning back to her pleasant face,” She has a date, Scott.”
At this news Scott’s normally stern expressional face changed into a gentle closed mouth smile.
“It’s about time Ororo.” He replied.
Ororo’s mouth quickly dropped.
“What in heaven’s name do you mean,’ about time’? I am not old. What is so exciting about this? It’s nothing.”
“You may not be old, but you are getting there,” Scott quickly continued as he watched Ororo’s eyes widen,” I know you’re 26…”
“24!” Ororo burst out.
“Well you act as if you’re forty okay!” Jean countered.
“Jean’s right, Ororo. I want you to loosen up and enjoy yourself.” Scott offered in some more of his thoughts.
“Yes, at least loosen up.” Jean finally walked over to Ororo and handed her the black satin three inch open toe heels.
“Do you even know who the man is?” Ororo continued talking to Scott, as she rolled her eyes and took the shoes.
Scott’s eyebrows quickly went down, making him looked confused.
“It’s Mike Glenn. The man from the police department.”
“The one who had Violet locked up the way he did?”
“Yes…”Ororo nodded matter-of-factly.
“Logan and I talked about that. I can’t believe how…”
“Now Scott, really. I’m sure he has his reasons. Maybe he just needs a guide to tell him the mutants are after all human too. Besides Scott. He is really interested in Ororo. You should’ve seen him at the mall today. He wants to learn and you should’ve seen the way he rushed to her. I thought the poor guy was going to cry if Ororo told him no.” Jean quickly butted in.
“Well Ororo if he is interested in you and knows you’re a mutant, and then maybe he is willing to give this a try.” Scott sighed, once again agreeing with his wife.
“You two are unbelievable. You act as if I will marry him…”
“No! No, Ororo…we just want you to be happy to look before you…”
“OH! I should’ve known what this was about. You’re still on Logan and me?” Ororo shouted out.
“Oh yes about that Ororo. Do you really see what you two are doing? Why waste your time? You are to sweet and kind to be giving that hot head your time.” Scott grumbled.
“You’re just saying that because you and he don’t get along.” Ororo countered.
“Ororo, who really does get along with that ogre? He causes trouble ever where he goes.”
Ororo could say nothing about what Scott had said. He was right about Logan. He was a hot head, and he did seem to upset someone everywhere that he did go.
She said no more as she walked started to walk out of the bathroom, into their bedroom, and for the door.
“Ororo wait!” Jean called as she rushed after her.
“We’re your friends Ororo. We want you to be happy.”
Ororo looked at Jean and then glanced at Scott who was now walking over to his wife.
She smiled at them and nodded her head before showing her way out.
Ororo had no desire to be inside after her conversation with Jean and Scott. She decided to go out and enjoy the wonderful feels of the weather. Her favorite spot had to be the garden. It was plenty of yards away from the manor and where Ororo could have some time to relax and take in the world. She was usually alone but the sudden sounds of creeping movements could be heard. She paid little mind to it as she walked future into the well manicured garden, taking her time to smile and gently touch one of two roses as she passed by the many rose brushes. She finally found her spot. It was a small hill and at its end a nice pond where seasonal ducks and swans chit-chatted and danced with one another. She sat down on the ground, closed her eyes and inhaled the sweet smell of nature. It didn’t take long for her to feel sudden body heat coming from her side, but she kept her eyes closed and continued to let the wind kiss at her hair.
“So, you gonna go on that date, Ro?” Ororo heard a low, but rough voice break the silence. Logan’s voice, how customary, she thought.
She only nodded her head, but her facial expression showed her mind was not made up.
Logan huffed and then chuckled at her. Ororo’s brow rose and she opened her eyes to this.
“What is so funny?” She asked with a smile.
“Nothin’ girls just can’t ever make up their minds.” Logan answered.
“I believe I will go, but I don’t see myself enjoying it.”
“Feelin’ like it’s a waste of your time, huh?”
“I actually do, Logan. You put it into words exactly.” Ororo said as she lay back, resting her head on her elbow.
“That is the main reason why and I have others as well. I mean, I haven’t gone on a date in a long time, well over three years. I don’t know. I looked at myself in the mirror and I wasn’t happy with what I saw…”
“What’s not to be happy about Ro? I’m lookin’ at ya and see nothin’ wrong at all.” Logan declared.
“I just want to do something different, I guess. I know it’s nothing serious but for this date I want to look a little different. I was thinking of cutting my hair.”
“All for a date!” Logan looked at her with wide eyes.
“No, Logan not just for the date. Just for a new look altogether.”
“Darlin’ what fer? You look fine, and for heaven’s sake don’t go choppin’ your hair off. I like it.” Logan directed as he suddenly reached out and stroked at Ororo’s long, locks.
“It’s just hair,” Ororo smiled at him,” it will grow back in time.”
“Ororo what is really on your mind? I can see in your eyes, somthin’s up?”
“Am I getting old?” She finally asked what was on her mind.
Logan simply leaned back, resting on his elbows.
“Well, Ro, just how old are ya?” He said with mockery.
“Logan!” Ororo shouted out laughing.
“Well…just askin’” His smile boarding as he watched her cheering up.
“I’m 24.” Ororo claimed.
“That’s not so bad.”
“That is what I was thinking. How old are you?”
“I can’t tell ya Darlin. I don’t know.” Logan answered honestly.
Ororo said nothing for a moment, falling silent, afraid she had brought up unwanted emotions in Logan.
“Who was it that said you were old?” Logan asked.
“Jean,” Ororo replied,” but I know what she meant. I am not old, just getting older.”
“Well everyone will, Ro’ can’t stop that.”
“Yes, I know, but the older I become the less chance I have left to do what it is I want to accomplish.”
Logan eyed Ororo as she said this. Her face had become numb, her eyes saddening. Not expectant, he reached for her, pulling her into an embrace. Ororo closed her eyes and sighed.
“Relax, Ro’ don’t worry so much. Things will happen when they are supposed to. You will get everything you dream one day.” Logan said and he had meant it, but not knowing what it was she actually dreamed.
He didn’t want to pry and Ororo did not feel he wanted to know. She instead did as he suggested, she relaxed into the embrace. It felt warm and comforting. When she inhaled his scent was drawn into her nose and she smiled for it was a pleasant smell to her.
“Thanks Logan. You really are a good friend.” Ororo told him as she wrapped her arm around him returning the hug.
Logan brought his hand up to her chin and he tilted it forward so her eyes could look into his. He leaned his face closer to her and gently he kissed her forehead, then he pulled away only to kiss her cheek. He stared down at her beautiful, full lips, and when he reached to kiss her there he felt her stiffen and he knew then that he had done enough.
She was not ready for the next step. Her smell was tangled with lust, but fear as well.
“Any time you need a friend Ro’, I’m here for ya.” Was all he could say and gently he released her and turned his eyes to the swimming birds on the pond.
“I really don’t know why I even gave him the time of day,” Ororo said as she eyed herself in Jean’s bathroom mirror. She looked at her hair and frowned at the plain straight white locks.
