Chapter 3

Jean:

I had nightmares for a few weeks after meeting Jenny. It's not that uncommon when you read minds. Xavier once told me that sweet dreams were a luxury that telepaths couldn't afford. We need to be open to the messages that our minds send to us. I've seen many things in my day. I've helped the professor to bring people out of trauma induced catatonic states. I've seen murders through the eyes of children; I've seen political prisoners tortured for their beliefs. I've seen the horrors of the holocaust and many more things I'd rather not remember. Jenny's memories are on that list.

I knew what to expect with Logan's warning, but I wasn't prepared. I know what he's done in the past, I know what he's done to friends of mine. It was different to experience it in the frantic memories of a stranger. I hated the feeling of the massive hands touching me. I 'reached' for Scott and felt him steady me as I went in. Afterward, I reached out to everyone in the hospital. No one I touched rememered a seven-foot man walking around recently. He must have been in his stalk mode. The only one better at it is Logan, or maybe McCoy. I doubted we'd find him without a really lucky break. I was right. Logan went to the apartment and found traces of scent varying from fresh to over a week old. He'd spent some time hanging around. What confused us all was why he'd left her alive. Not just alive, but with nothing worse than a broken arm and a concussion. For Creed, it was as if he'd just bumped into her on the street.

When I talked to Jenny, I made sure she didn't shut down her emotions. She'd need them. I knew she was angry and afraid, and disgusted. When we brought her to man mansion she was a little frustrated with herself and the other students. She was isolated and alone. She worried that everyone knew what had happened. Most of the speculation was correct from the other students. I was proud of them in the way they felt protective. Since the younger ones couldn't go out on missions, protecting the new non-mutant was something they could do. I placed Jenny in Jubilee's care. She was a little younger, but she might be able to relate better to the girl. I don't know how much she's shared, but eventually, she might share her own experiences.
