Foul Blood
No dialogue in this chapter…just Asher plotting.
=============================================================
Asher leaned back against the large intricately embroidered pillows that lay across the vast expanse of silk sheets and soft fur. The area he laid in was too vast to be considered a bed. It was more of a risen floor, reached by three black marble steps that stretched the full width of the room and was filled with the softest sheets and pillows one could find. The area took up half the room, with a fireplace crackling behind it, safely distanced from the flammable sheets by more black marble carved with designs of lilac and wolves.
For Asher it had been a rather long night. He had expected to come back to the Circus of the Damned with his prey and take delight in discovering what lay beneath the surprisingly expensive silk clothes. What had awaited him however, was a whole other story. Jean-Claude and his pretty little human servant had shown up, and Asher had to leave his prize sleeping amongst the red silk sheets of his chosen room.
The night did not go as he had planned. Jean-Claude’s servant, Anita, had made him feel things he had not felt…for a very long time. It was disturbing, and Asher had made his way back to his temporary room to regain his senses.
Asher reached over the expanse of sheets and pillows and gently pulled the still sleeping man onto his lap, resting his head against Asher’s stomach. It was a pity that such a man was hunchbacked, and Asher sympathized with how this man’s life must be like. Running his hands down the broad expanse of the man’s back as he lay across Asher’s legs, Asher felt the large lump that extended from the man’s shoulders all the way down to where his shirt met his pants.
He let his mind wander as his fingers absently played with the man’s shoulder length blond hair. Jean-Claude, of course, looked the same as he did all those years ago. Asher was glad that the sight of him still pained Jean-Claude.
He had finally found another lover. The anger Asher felt at the thought burned through his body and his hand clenched tightly. He realized his clenched fist was pulling the man’s hair and he slowly relaxed it, though the anger was still strong.
He was jealous, he knew it, and it made him angrier. He had hoped that those types of feelings had disappeared; he wanted to feel nothing but anger towards Jean-Claude. Tonight he realized that a small part of him was still in love with the man who let his Juliana die.
The thought that Jean-Claude was happily in love while he was still alone was unbearable. Looking down at the man sleeping on his lap, an idea flashed through his mind. Almost Asher disregarded it, but he’d been alone for too long and it weighed heavily on him.
Being loved was one of the greatest feelings Asher had ever felt. And winning that love was a wonderful game that he had not played in such a long time.
More likely than not, though, this man would probably be against being wooed by another man. If Asher didn’t have his scars, that wouldn’t have been a problem. He had enticed many a men into his bed that would normally protest against it. His scars were now a problem; he couldn’t even seduce a woman into his bed, much less a straight man.
That the man was hunchbacked and probably knew about the loneliness of not having a lover only helped Asher out by just a little. Drastic measures were needed, but Asher hesitated. The man on his lap was handsome, sure, but he didn’t know anything else about him. The memory of Anita and Jean-Claude rose in his mind and Asher made his decision.
Pulling the sleeping man upwards until they lay chest to chest, Asher laid his lips against the thick muscular neck. Slowly licking his way up the thick column until his nose bumped up against the man’s strong jaw, he gently sank his fangs into the smooth skin.
And instantly pulled away. What had filled his mouth was not the sweet nectar of a young virile man, but something foul. Was this man not human?
Asher nearly spat out the blood that sat in his mouth, but instead let it slide down his throat. Repositioning himself so that he drank instead from where his neck and shoulder met, Asher gingery sank his fangs back into him and quickly placed the first mark on his human servant.

A/N—If I remember correctly, Warren’s blood can heal most anybody, with the exception of mutants with demonic abilities. It does the exact opposite to them. I figured since religious icons work against the vampires in Anita Blake’s world, but vampires not really being demons, just undead, Warrens blood would probably not be a pleasant experience for them…but it wouldn’t kill them.
