"What's with you?"
"I nearly killed someone."
"What?"
Kitty elbowed Kurt gently in the ribs. "No, you didn't. The medic said it was the heat." She slipped her arm around his waist and smiled wanly at Scott. "Speaking of which, the air conditioner works in this thing, you know..." Scott took the hint and cranked the cooling up to maximum.
"I don't know what came over me," Kurt began.
"You got jealous. It's the Y chromosome," Rogue yawned. "Where the Hell is everyone else?"
"I don't know but if they're not here in five minutesey'rey're taking the bus back to Bayville." He looked in the rearview mirror at Kurt and Kitty. "So what happened?"
"We ran into an old friend of mine and Kurt got jealous...there were bees involved."
"Oooooooookay..."
Kurt sighed. "He got stung. I thought he was having a bad reaction but it was just the heat and running up hill to give Kitty his email address."
Scott raised an eyebrow. "Why, Kitty, you old dog..."
"Not funny, Scott you old stick in the mud," she growled.
"Hey!"
Kurt broke the impending insult swap with a low groan. "I don't feel so well..."
"You got too hot, sweetie," Kitty murmured soothingly, reaching across the front seat to aim the vents at Kurt. "Do we still have some sandwiches in the cooler? You need to eat..."
"Todd ate the last one about an hour ago," Rogue supplied. "He and Lance had the munchies. I didn't want to delve into that one."
Kurt groaned again and clutched at his head. "I'm not hungry...it's mein Kopf1..."
"Uh oh. Switching languages. He really doesn't feel good..." Rogue twisted in her seat to face Kurt and Kitty. "Scott, call Jean's phone or something. Tell them to hurry up-he's looking really bad back here."
Kurt slid down in his seat as Scott tried to contact Jean. "I feel dizzy," Kurt moaned.
Kitty's expression slid from mildly concerned to near panic. "You're hotter than usual," she murmured mostly to herself, the back of her hand pressed to his forehead. "Your pulse is way too fast..."
"He's got a fast metabolism," Rogue suggested uncertainly, climbing carefully into the back seat. "God, you're shedding!"
"I told you I felt bad," he muttered thickly. "Water?"
Scott fumbled under the front seat and came up with a bottle of water. "Jean said they'll be here in a minute. They had to stop for Amara to find the perfect Port-a-Potty."
"Princess," Kitty snorted.
"Like you're one to talk, Miss It's Wet In There!" Rogue scooted back as Kurt slid to one side, trying to lay down. "Hey, careful..."
"Can't sit up," he whispered. "Too dizzy."
Kitty let out a rushed breath and tried to lift his legs, trying to arrange him on the seat. "Kurt, talk to me! What's going on? Did you eat something weird?"
"None of your cooking," he muttered, smiling faintly. Scott snorted a soft laugh as he craned in his seat to see what was going on.
"Ha, ha, Fuzzy," Kitty uttered darkly.
Rogue frowned and pushed his hair off his sweaty forehead. "Does your mouth taste funny?"
"Bitter," he said after a moment. "Like...burned sugar."
Kitty did not move as Lance flung open the car door. "Move over...hey! What's with him?"
"We don't know," Rogue snapped, more concerned than she wanted to let on.
Lance tried to move Kitty out of the way but found his hand passing through her as she resisted. "Let me see," he demanded.
"No! What do you know about this sort of thing?"
"My grandma," he snapped.
Kitty's face grew blank then understanding. "Oh, right..." She scooted to one side and let Lance in. She found herself pushed entirely out of the car and standing next to Amara before she knew it.
"He sick?" the Nova Roman asked with more than a touch of boredom in her voice. "It's hot out here...make him move so I can get into the air conditioning."
Kitty snarled at her. "Shut the fuck up, Amara!"
She blinked. "Kiss your loved ones with that mouth?"
"I will kick your ass if you don't shut up right now," Kitty growled, fear making her uncharacteristically violent.
"Both of you shut up," Jean ordered. "Lance, move. Let someone with some medical training in."
Lance started to open his mouth to reply but found Rogue's bare hand. "Move," she ordered, smiling in faint satisfaction as Lance scrambled out of the way to let Jean in.
"Kurt," she said calmly, "are you in any pain?"
He nodded, then shook his head.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Scott fretted.
Kurt groaned again and clutched at his temples. "Es tut weh...Mir ist schwindlig "2
Kitty shoved forward, barely able to edge in beside Jean. "It's okay, Kurt, I'm here..."
His eyes flew open and locked on hers. "Oh...this...isn't so bad now." His eyes rolled back in his head and he lost consciousness.
"So...you fainted?" Logan asked incredulously.
"It wasn't a faint," Kurt sniffed. "It was a temporary lapse of consciousness."
"Keep tellin' yourself that," Todd muttered. "Fainted like a girl."
"Like you're one to talk," Jubilee snorted.
"Wait your turn." Emma's cool voice drifted from the doorway. "We've found the others. They're stranded somewhere on the Jersey turnpike."
"How the Hell did they get there?" Logan demanded, gruffness masking his worry.
Jubilee and Todd exchanged wary glances. "Um, I have to go to the bathroom," he said suddenly, knocking over his chair in his haste to rise.
"Whoa there, bub." Logan's hand shot out and he seized Todd by the arm. "Talk."
"Erk!"
"You can kill him later, Logan," Emma sighed. "They need some help with the car. Three bad tires and, from the nearest I could understand, something is on fire." She rolled her eyes. "Remy is damned near impossible to make out."
Jubilee frowned. "No he isn't..."
"That aside," Emma said loudly, "Logan, you're needed. Sean said he would go with you."
"I did?" the startled Irishman asked from behind her.
"Yes," she ited.ted. "You did."
Professor Xavier sighed. "Very well. It's late. We'll continue this in the morning with Kitty. Everyone, please return here at eight a.m. Be prompt or you will lose your place in line as it were."
The party disbanded, Kitty and Kurt lingering to have a moment to themselves. "You know," she said carefully, "I'm starting to think this sounds pretty unbelievable myself, and I was there."
"He'll know, though," Kurt sighed. "He'll understand."
"We hope." She linked her arm through his and they headed towards the stairs. Kitty felt a lump in her stomach about the next morning-her part of the tale was going to be a doozy.
