Emma rolled her eyes and leaned against the door heavily. "You two have been into Logan's beer, haven't you? You didn't cause this...my..." She stopped herself by literally biting her tongue. "You didn't cause this." Her eyes flicked from Sam to Theresa and back again. She could feel the turmoil roiling in Sam's mind as easily as she could the embarrassment in Theresa's. It coated them like paint, thick and discoloring in her mind's eye. "You were here the entire week. How could any of this have been your fault?"
Sam looked imploringly at Theresa, who made a fluttering motion at waist level as if to say 'forget it', but he just sighed. "We...didn't answer when Scott hollered for us." His face colored slightly. He could not look up to meet Emma's eyes and he edged a little further from Theresa. "We were kind of busy."
Emma felt her brows creep up. "I see..."
"You ain't reading my mind, are you?" Theresa challenged, looking up suddenly, her eyes flashing. "That's unethical!"
"I'm not," Emma sighed, "even vaguely interested in the nitty gritty details of your liason, however ill advised it was." She pushed away from the door and nodded towards the stairs. "I suggest we take this somewhere else, somewhere less likely to draw attention."
Theresa blew out a frustrated breath and rolled her eyes again. "Sam, you're overreacting. I knew this was stupid..." She turned to face Emma and said flatly, her words not bearing even a trace of the emotions Emma could feel rising from her like smoke. "He thinks that this is our fault because we were having sex and ignored Scott calling for someone to come downstairs."
Sam's jaw dropped at her matter of fact statement. "Theresa! How...that's..." He shook himself visibly and said as clearly as he could muster, "That's private!"
Emma sighed. "I thought you were just about to tell me the same thing."
"But..." he blushed even more hotly, "not like that!" He looked around as if expecting Banshee to leap out of the shadows and pummel him for deflowering his only child. "Can we...can we go somewhere else?"
"That," Emma replied calmly, "is just what I was trying to suggest."
Kitty chose that moment to ghost through the door. "Oh! Sorry..." She stopped short, Kurt yelping in surprise as she left him on the other side of the wood. "Um, night..."
Kurt appeared in the middle of the foyer, rubbing his nose. "That hurt, Liebes!" He frowned and looked at his fingers as if expecting blood. "What was that for?"
"She ran into us," Emma responded dryly. "Did you settle things with the Professor?"
Kitty and Kurt exchanged looks between Sam and Theresa. "Um, kinda," Kitty finally sighed. "But...well, things are still confusing."
"Tell me," the telepath murmured thoughtfully,1 "what do you think the cause of all this was?"
Kurt made a strangled noise in his throat. "Was? How the Hell are we supposed to know that?" He shook his head and frowned more deeply. "If we knew, we would have just said it outright instead of this storytelling!"
Emma sighed. "Kitty?"
"I think...and this is just me...I think it probably had something to do with the Brotherhood." Her expression became inwardly focused as she turned over some ideas in her head. "But it's too complicated for them...I mean, as out there as Magneto's gotten, this is a new twist."
"What twist would that be? Care to explain it to me before we have to sit through the Bayville Inquisition again tomorrow?" As if on their own, the bench by the front door and two chairs from the rec room came gliding across the foyer to arrange themselves near the teenagers. "Have a seat."
Sam sat on the very edge of the bench, wincing visibly when Theresa chose one of the chairs, crossing her arms over her chest and her legs at the knee in an attitude that screamed 'Leave me alone!' Kitty took the chair next to her and Kuook ook up a position behind his girlfriend, his hands resting on her shoulders possessively. Kitty squeezed Kurt's fingers and tilted her face up to favor him with a smile. Theresa sighed and stretched out her legs. "Can we get on with this? I have a test to study for..."
"No, you don't," Sam muttered. "We have the same classes." He glowered at his hands, resting on his knees. "Sorry then...sorry for everything."
"One crisis at a time, please," Emma stated briskly. "Kitty? Kurt? One of you start talking."
"Well," Kurt said slowly, searching for the easiest explanation. "You heard Rogue and Todd's story, ja? Well...they sort of ended up with us."
"I gathered that," the older woman sighed. "But how?"
'That's just it," Kitty supplied. "We're not sure. I had gone to pay for the room and find some food for Kurt. When I came back, Rogue and Todd were sort of laying there in front of the door to the room."
"Laying there?" Emma's brows quirked. "That's...unbelievable."
"It gets worse," Kurt promised. "The main problem seems to be these silver things."
"I think that's what made Kurt act so weird at the fair," Kitty put in.
"Back up," Emma cut her off, pressing her fingers to the bridge of her nose as she tried to process the information. "Start whereue aue and Todd left off..."
"That would take too long" Kurt groaned. "Look, this is the nearest we can figure, after talking to the Professor, someone has..." he paused to search for the word, his brow wrinkling.
"Infected us," Kitty supplied.
"Ja, infected us with these...things..."
"Vague, but unclear," Emma murmured. "Like germs?"
"Worse," Kurt nodded firmly, "some sort of device that makes you hallucinate."
Emma tried very hard not to snort. Theresa was not so successful. "Bloody hell, what is this? _Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas _? " She rose to her feet, raking her fingers through her hair. "We can't stop here! It's bat country!"2
Sam gave her a look that was half imploring, half annoyed. "Theresa, please sit down." He looked almost embarrassed. "I still think that we..."
"Look," she sighed, focusing solely on him, oblivious to the others so near by, "if you didn't have this to blame it on, you'd find something else. You just feel bad because we had sex and it wasn't my first time," she paused, finally realizing they did have an audience. "So, now that I've overshared, I'm going to bed."
There was a tense silence as she walked upstairs, stretching until the faint slam of her door signaled the finality of her departure. "Well," Emma said lightly, "this has been an interesting evening. Mass confusion, hallucinatory silver things, and apparently, we have alien abductions going on that deposit hapless mutants in Arizona." She nodded. "Nice."
Kurt felt like he wanted to scream. It sounded ridiculous, even to his ears, but he knew it for the truth and he knew it was just going to get worse. "Miss Frost...Sam," he added, feeling the necessity of including the unwilling interloper, "what happened...it was more strange than can be easily explained by the Professor's request for our individual stories. Might I...could you please..."
Kitty's soft gasp preceded Emma's startled moue. "You would like for me to...glean this from you?"
"Ja," he sighed in relief. "I think that would be the best way to get this all out in the open."
"Kurt...I have to warn you, this will be a very taxing experience. It is not simple taking a peek."
Kitty's fingers crept up to squeeze his again. "Kurt, it'll just take us a little while to tell it all...And Professor Xavier is already on the trail of those things."
"Nein. I want her to just read it." He nodded, decided already.
"Why not all of you?" Sam suggested, drawn in. "I mean, if she just did all of you at once..."
Emma cringed inwardly. "All of them? That would be...painful." She paused for a moment, letting her mind open a fraction. She could not sense the Professor or even Jean, so she knew their shields were up and firmly in place. "This is what we'll do," she said finally. "Whoever is agreeable to this, we will meet in the rec room in...let's say an hour. I'll see what I can see, so to speak."
"Danke, Frau Frost," Kurt breathed. "I'll go ask the others." He disappeared before Kitty could offer to go with him or help.
"Are you sure about this?" Kitty asked softly. "I mean, isn't this going to be hard on you?"
"Frankly," Emma smirked, "I tire of the Professor's tedious story telling yin. This will expedite matters greatly. I'd rather have the headache than the boredom."

A/N Starting tomorrow, the story will be in a more traditional format as per reader request.

1 Does anyone other than me think it's kind of funny to say a telepath or psychic did something "thoughtfully"?
2 My favorite line from that movie/book. Driving through the desert, hallucinating on mescaline and other things, seeing bats everywhere...You have to see it, lol.
