Update 04/26/2008 -- After reviewing category guidelines as posted in the AFF Forums, I have decided that this story should be posted in Het-M/F, rather than General. Despite the slash content, the main pairing is M/F, in my opinion.
This story is set in the X-Men Evolution universe after the television series ended. Kurt and Kitty are about eighteen years old and about to start college.
Warnings: This is a dark fic. Bad things are going to happen to our beloved characters. For the story as a whole -- M/M and M/F nonconsensual sex. M/F consensual sex. Anal sex, hand job, oral sex.
Please rate and review. Constructive criticism is much desired. My rough draft is now complete at ten chapters.
Chapter One: Ambush
Community college. Kitty said it like it was a dirty word. But the events of the past few years had made leaving Bayville a frightening prospect for her. Even more so for Kurt, despite his image inducer. So here they were, being shepherded around the Bayville Community College campus by a couple of overly perky upper classmen.
“Now over here is the Campus Activity Center…The bookstore is on the first floor and the Student Lounge is on the third…” The blonde cheerleader smiled brightly as she waved in the general direction of the building.
“And there is Admissions…But, you probably know that already or you wouldn’t be here.” The dark haired cheerleader picked up the spiel without missing a beat.
Kitty groaned and whispered in his ear.
“Like, I already got all this from the website. This is a complete waste of time.”
“For you, maybe.” Kurt nudged her with an elbow. “I think the blonde is looking at me.” He tugged at his shirt and touched his “watch” self-consciously.
“I don’t think you’re her type, Fuzzy.”
“No?”
“No. You actually have a brain.” Kitty smirked at him.
“Oh. And I thought it was the accent.” Kurt joked as they followed their guides across the courtyard toward the library.
“So…Are you really like, checking out ‘Miss Blonde and Busty?’” Kitty asked as they quickened their pace. “What happened to Amanda?”
“I don’t know.” Kurt’s voice dropped a little and his smile faded a bit. “I haven’t seen her since the week after graduation. One letter, no phone calls…I think I’ve been dumped.”
“Ouch. That sucks.” They stopped short as their guides decided to make another speech just outside the library.
“Ja. It sucks.” Kitty caught the swish of a phantom tail passing near her shins.
“Watch the tail.” She whispered.
“Oops. Sorry.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about Amanda?” Kitty was more interested in this bit of news than the slightly dingy reference room they were currently passing through.
“You were still upset over Lance. And I wasn’t sure. I thought maybe her parents were interfering again…” Kurt shrugged. “They never liked me.”
“Maybe they got to her.” Kitty patted his arm. “And I wasn’t that upset over Lance, really. He’s not worth it.”
“No. He is not.” Kurt’s tone was serious for a moment, and then he shot her a quick grin. “So…We begin a new year, new school, free to ‘play the field?’”
“Some field.” Kitty sniffed as they passed the brunette cheerleader who was holding open the exit door for them.
“Ah. But at least it’s a new one, hmm?”
The afternoon passed quickly enough along with the tour. Despite Kurt’s stated intentions of acquiring a few phone numbers, he was still empty handed when they returned to the tan SUV the Professor had loaned them. Kitty fumbled with a handful of pamphlets and her class schedule while Kurt clambered into the driver’s seat. She climbed into the passenger seat with a sigh.
“Looks like I’ll be running all over campus come Monday. My first class is in the Baxter building, then my second one is all the way over by Admissions…”
Kurt mumbled sympathetically as he started the engine. Suddenly, their ears were assaulted by loud music, the windshield wipers began flailing wildly and heated air blasted through the vents.
“Vhat is this?” Kurt jumped in his seat and Kitty dropped her pamphlets as she reached for the volume control.
“Why did you turn it all up like that!?!” She snapped.
“I didn’t!” Kurt fumbled with the controls trying to turn off the windshield wipers.
“God, turn off the heat! Smells like something’s in the vents.” They both reached for the temperature controls at once and bumped heads.
“Ow!”
“Ouch!”
“I am the one who is driving. You sit still!” Kurt rubbed his head. Kitty sat back with a sniff, then hit the button to roll down her window. She was already beginning to sweat.
“Hey! This thing isn’t working.” Kitty pressed the button, staring at it in growing confusion.
“Vhat?” Kurt fumbled with his own window. It too, refused to respond, though the music had stopped its blaring and the windshield wipers had ceased their frantic waving.
“The Professor’s gonna be, like, so mad!” Kitty continued to fiddle with the window controls. “What did you do, Kurt?”
“I did nothing…Vhat is that smell?” Kurt blinked at Kitty in denial.
Kitty never answered him, she had slumped over against the window, mouth open slightly. But, it hardly mattered as Kurt collapsed forward across the steering wheel, the engine running and heat pouring through the vents at full blast.
Two minutes later, a dark gray van pulled into the vacant space next to the SUV. On its side was blazoned “Creed’s Pest Control and Extermination Service.” The same logo adorned the dark blue uniform that covered the broad shoulders of the tall fair haired man who stepped out of it. He looked around briefly before sliding open the side door of the van, exposing a remarkably clean interior.
Whistling a jaunty tune, the large man rummaged in a large duffel bag until he found what he was looking for. He bunched the short lengths of flexible metal in one large hand while he gave another quick glance around the nearly empty parking lot. Seeing no one, he opened the SUV door, allowing the heated air with its odd aroma to spill out.
“Hmmph…Expected a little better out ya two. Supposed ta be the runt’s prize students.”
He pulled the limp boy away from the steering wheel and reached across to kill the engine and close the vents. He then turned his attention to the boy, slipping one of the lengths of metal around the boy’s neck, smoothing the band against the furred flesh he could feel beneath the holographic image and thumbing its fastening closed.
Another quick glance showed him that he was still unobserved. It took just a moment to transfer the unconscious boy to the waiting van. He paused a moment to let his head clear before opening the girl’s door. He caught her weight carefully as she had been resting against it. Soon she was stretched out next to the boy, a second collar strapped about her neck.
He quickly locked the keys to the SUV inside, along with the kids’ cell phones and the girl’s purse. Then he returned to his van to secure his passengers for this first stage of their journey. In less than five minutes, the van left the campus grounds with its hidden cargo and no one the wiser.
“Like takin’ candy from a baby.” The man snickered as he turned the van onto the highway. “Wonder how long it’ll be ‘fore the runt realizes they’re gone.”
When the kids didn’t make curfew, Ororo called them. When thirty minutes had passed and neither student could be raised, she informed the Professor. While such behavior could often be expected from other students, it was unusual enough for these two to spark concern.
A quick check located both the vehicle and their cell phones on the Bayville Community College campus, yet the Professor was unable to sense them, even with the use of Cerebro. Now this was cause for alarm.
The XMen were dispatched to search for them, starting with the abandoned SUV. A single sniff from the Wolverine’s sensitive nose was enough to tell them who and how.
“Sabertooth! Dammit!” Wolverine growled. “He rigged the vents with knock out gas.”
“Sabertooth? What would he want with these two?” Storm raised an eyebrow.
“Knowing him, nothing good.” Cyclops' tone was grim.
“You got that right, Slim.” Wolverine scowled. “We need to find them kids fast.”
Kurt fought to wake from his nightmare. The world seemed to lurch around him and his ears were filled with a rhythmic thumping sound. Brilliant flashes of light dazzled his eyes as he struggled against the tangled web of serpents that held him so tightly. One coiled cold and heavy around his neck and he frantically fought to free himself.
Finally, he wrenched open his yellow eyes and stared wildly around him. He was awake, yet the nightmare continued. Between blinding flashes of light he made out the interior of a helicopter, its rotors straining against the wind that swept rain hard against the windows. In front of him hulked the large frame of the pilot, silhouetted by another flash of lightning.
He struggled again, realizing his bonds were the tough webbing of safety straps. His hands were bound in front of him with more webbing and he knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. A sudden lurch of the craft threw him against the straps to his right where he brushed against something warm and soft.
“Kitty.” She lay limp in the safety harness, head lolling. She too, was bound and wore a metal collar about her neck. He looked again toward the pilot, trying to make out the man’s identity. Another flash of lightning illuminated the man’s face and one clawed hand reaching for the controls. Kurt’s stomach lurched.
“Sabertooth.” He spoke in a whisper. This was not good. Not good at all.
He struggled against his bonds again for a moment, then gave it up and attempted to teleport free. The man could hardly stop him and still fly the helicopter in this storm, right? It was worth the risk...But, nothing happened. Kurt tried again, still nothing.
Now Kurt was in a panic and he could hear Sabertooth cursing loudly at the weather and the helicopter itself. The increasing vehemence and violence of the man’s tone sank in, and Kurt thought better of risking a distraction to their pilot. He settled for sitting still and slowly working his hands free of their bonds. Apparently, it hadn’t occurred to Sabertooth to restrain Kurt’s tail and he used it to slowly loosen the straps.
As he slipped his hands free, the sound of the rotors took on a labored sound and the pilot fell silent. Lightning continued to flash at random intervals, illuminating the cabin but doing little for visibility beyond the windshield. Thinking it safer, Kurt left the safety straps intact, and instead reached to feel the band that circled his neck. At first it seemed seamless, but eventually he found the join. He probed at it with his blunt fingers but could not find the mechanism to release it.
Another flash of lightning revealed a sea of trees lashing in the wind. In that brief glimpse he got the sense they were closing in fast. Too fast.
“Shit!” Sabertooth snarled over the roar of the rotors.
The next few moments were a confusing jumble of noise and violent tumbling as the helicopter crashed into the trees. Kurt was thrown hard against the safety harness. He thought he must have blacked out for a moment.
When he opened his eyes again, the helicopter teetered uneasily on its side, the rotors stilled. His eyes strained to make out his surroundings as he felt something cold and wet seeping in through the side of the helicopter and soaking into his fur. Sabertooth’s still form lay across the jagged edges of the broken windshield. A flash of lightning revealed the red of blood and the safety harness that was only partially buckled.
A quick look showed him that Kitty now hung above him from her own safety harness. The coldness he’d felt was water seeping into the cabin at an alarming rate. If he didn’t get himself and Kitty free quickly they would drown.
Kurt began to tug at the buckles frantically, cursing his thick fingers for clumsiness. Before he was done, the water had risen enough to nearly cover his face. Once he was free, he frantically tackled Kitty’s bonds. They had to get out of the helicopter before it sank completely.
Kitty was beginning to rouse now and he tried to impress on her their danger.
“Kitty…Please wake up! We have to get out of here.” Her half conscious movements were interfering with his efforts to untie her hands. The water was now up to his waist where he crouched on what should have been the side of the helicopter.
“Wha? What’s going on?”
“Just stop moving and let me untie you.” At last her hands were free.
“I’ll jus’ phase out. Give me a sec.” She paused a moment, then looked confused. “Why can’t I phase?”
“I don’t know. I can’t teleport either. And there’s no time to figure it out.” Kurt released the buckle on her harness, catching her carefully as she slipped free.
“Oh wow! That’s cold.”
“I know. We have to get out before we sink.”
They quickly splashed to the only available exit, the broken windshield.
“Is that Sabertooth?” Kitty whispered as they clambered past the still form.
“Ja. I think so.”
“Is he, like, dead?”
“If we are lucky, he is.”
Beyond the windshield was darkness and rushing water. With certain death behind them, they had no choice but to plunge into the cold water before them. Kurt wrapped his tail tightly around her waist and they clung to each other as they were swept away into the unknown.
In just minutes they were cold to the bone. Intermittent flashes of lightning showed them they were in the grip of a river. Bits of leaves and branches littered the water around them and they slowly tried to work their way toward the left bank as it seemed to be closer.
“We…we’ve got…to…ge..get…out of the water.” Kitty stuttered between chattering teeth.
“I know…keep swimming. Ugh…” A heavy log slipped from the darkness and struck Kurt’s shoulder hard enough to stun him and he sank below the surface for a moment and returned coughing and sputtering.
Thankfully the rain and lightning had stopped now, but the river continued to flow fast. At last they reached the bank and were able to grasp the branches of an overhanging tree. The slope was steep and slick, but they dragged themselves wearily out of the water.
The river here had cut deep into the side of a cliff and they followed the narrow strip of land, looking for some place to rest. Finally, they found an opening in its side.
“Look Kitty! A cave.” Kurt tapped the weary girl on the shoulder and pointed. His yellow eyes saw much more keenly in the darkness than hers.
“Great. A cave.” Kitty grumbled as Kurt drew her closer.
“Ah. It is dry in here. It should be safe.
“Unless there’s a bear. Or a moose.” Kitty paused at the entrance, peering into the darkness.
“Moose do not live in caves.” Kurt scoffed.
“What about bears?”
“I see no bears in here.” Kurt sighed and tugged her deeper into the cave. It wasn’t large and it didn’t take long to prove that they were alone.
“I guess it’s better than drowning.”
“Ja.” Kurt crouched down wearily, resting his back against the rough rock wall. Kitty slowly sank down beside him.
“And it’s dry.” She sighed.
“Ja.”
“But not warm.”
“No.” Kurt reached over and pulled her closer to him. “We should stay close to keep warm.”
“Sure.” Kitty sounded a little strange, but she curled up closer to him. After a moment he realized she was crying quietly. He rubbed her shoulders in the darkness.
“Are you all right, Katzchen?”
“Not really…Where are we? What happened? What’s going on with our powers and how the hell do we get these things off?” She tugged at the metal collar around her neck, to no effect.
“I don’t know…I think there was something in the SUV. In the heater…I remember nothing until I woke up in the helicopter. It was not soon after that we crashed.”
“You’re soaked to the skin.” Kitty sat up suddenly. “Your fur.”
“It is nothing.”
“No it’s not. You’ll get sick.” She stood up. “You need to get dry.”
“I do not see how. Come, sit back down. We should try to sleep.”
“No. Take your clothes off.”
“I beg your pardon?” He blinked at her shadowy figure in the darkness. She had begun to strip off her clothes, her pale skin shown in the dim light.
“Take your things off and lay them out so they can dry. It’s not like they’re keeping you warm anyway. Then you can do that shaking thing you do at the pool.”
“I hardly think that will help.” Kurt protested, but rose to follow her suggestion.
“Trust me, Fuzzy. It’s better than trying to snuggle up to a wet dog.”
“I am not a dog.” Kurt’s reply was muffled as he tugged his sweater over his head. The wet fabric clung to him. “But, I see your point.”
In a moment, they had spread their clothing on along the walls of the cave. By unspoken agreement, they left their undergarments in place. Kurt then stepped just outside and shook himself vigorously, sending drops of water flying into the night air. He was left cold and chilled, but he had to admit at least to himself that it felt better.
Once again, they curled up together in the back of the cave, ignoring the rough ground and the bits of leaves and twigs that stuck to their damp skin and fur. As Kitty snuggled into his arms, he was reminded for the first time in years the crush he once had on the girl.
“Is that better, Katzchen?”
“Much better.” She rubbed her face on his shoulder and he felt one hand smoothing the fur on his chest. “I wonder why dogs smell when they’re wet and you don’t?”
“Just be grateful that I do not.” He shifted a little under her touch. Her fingers continued to smooth his fur here and there and it sent little shivers through him that had little to do with the cold.
“You still cold?” Kitty noted the shivering and looked up at him.
“Ja.” He cleared his throat nervously and caught her wandering fingers in one hand. “We should sleep, now.”
“Kind of hard to do, under the circumstances.” Kitty sighed. “How long will it take for the others to find us, I wonder?”
“Not long I hope.” Kurt let go of her fingers to reach up and smooth back her hair. “Though, if I must spend the night cold and wet, I am glad that I am not alone.”
“So am I.” Kitty leaned her cheek against his hand. She rubbed her face against it, turning the touch into something like a caress. “I never did tell you why Lance and I broke up.”
“You said he was jealous. That it caused arguments.” Kurt tentatively stroked her cheek with his fingers.
“Yeah. He was. Of you.”
“There is nothing to be jealous of…” Kurt’s fingers stilled. “Is there?” His stomach clenched nervously as he waited for her answer.
“That’s what I told him…” Kitty turned her face toward his hand until her lips brushed his fingertips. “But, I think maybe he was right.”
“Kitty…” Kurt was as at a loss what to say. He had put those feelings away so long ago he was afraid to drag them back out.
“I’m sorry Kurt. This probably isn’t the right time.” She shifted to rest her head against his shoulder.
“Things may seem different in the morning light…” Kurt hugged her a little closer. “We will talk later, ja?”
“O.K. Later, then.”
