The Soul Hunter

I do not own X-Men: Evolution or any of the characters involved therein. They are the property of Marvel and Cartoon Network among others. However, my original character Scarlett and the history and mythos surrounding her is mine forever! Mwahaha!

On another note: This is my first X-Men fic of any kind. Sailor Moon is my main area and I've been writting in that for about five years now. I've been into X-Men for about a year, but I don't know everything. If my characters seem OOC or you find any other problems with my work, don't hesitate to review!

Chapter One--Ancient Memories

Logan woke up suddenly, a little disoriented in the darkness of the room he was in. He looked around in confusion until he remembered where he was: the Institute. He was there for another one of his stints--just having arrived that day from a road trip to Florida--and found it odd to wake up in a room that was his and not being paid for by the day.

But what had woken him wasn't the feel of the clean cotton sheets on his skin, but rather a hollow feeling in his chest. He sat quietly in the dark, almost not daring to breathe, but daring the feeling to surge in him again.

It did.

"No, it can't be. She's dead," he sat on the edge of his bead staring grimly out the window into the moonless night. Irrationally he got up and looked out the window, expecting any second to see his memories take Earthly form and walk out of the mist. He growled irritably at himself, but was relieved. He returned to bed, not being able to fall asleep for a long time.

'Wherever she is,' he thought to himself, 'She's close.'

"You can't be serious?" Charles Xavier insisted in disbelief the next morning.

Logan simply looked at him without speaking.

The Professor rolled to the window, "But we had thought her dead; she's been inactive for so long . . . Though of course, if anyone could sense her, you could. She's far too powerful for Cerebro and I, and I've never been in that kind of contact with her."

The powerfully built man glared at the back of his old friend but said nothing for a time. At last he broke the silence, "Have you told anyone about Scarlett?"

Xavier turned around, "I've told the staff in brief, yes. But the students, no, they have no idea. They accept the explanation about mutants that I gave them. I didn't think she w pos pose a threat any longer, and all the other Ancients are dead."

"We can't underestimate her," Logan sat on the desk moodily, "She's proved that before and still we fall for her tricks."

"I think it's time for an emergency meeting."

"What is this about Professor?" Jean asked curiously, tying back her vibrant red hair, "Magneto usually lays low for a while after a failure. It's too early for him to make his next move."

"This isn't about Magneto," he looked seriously around at the group of students, even the younger recruits where there: the information he was about to give was of the utmost importance, "A force the like of which you have never encountered is headed right for this place; a powerful mutant--indeed the oldest living mutant remaining--is already closer than when she was detected last night--crossing the Atlantic--leaving us to belive that she is making her way here."

Jean spoke up again, her higher intelligence putting her past the others who were still going through the information, "But Professor, if she is so powerful, how was Cerebro able to detect her? It cannot search over vast distances on its own."

"Quite right Jean," he smiled, "I was asleep, so Cerebro was only doing light scans, leaving messages for me for the morning. But I doubt I could have located her using it at allt wat was Logan who sensed her."

"Logan?" Scott looked in surprise at the man leaning aloofly against the wall behind the desk, "But you don't have powers like that--"

"They aren't mine. They're hers. She's . . . an old friend from fifty years ago."

"Fifty years ago?" Evan lau, ", "Let me get this straight. She's older than Magneto--the oldest mutant I know of anyway, and you knew her fifty years ago. Even if she's powerful, she would need to be at least sixty! It would be easy, but--I don't know about the rest of you--but I don't go out for beating up old ladies."

"She's older than that," Logan said to no one in particular, "But trust me, bub, she doesn't look it."

Kitty was more confused than ever, "But if she's your friend, isn't that, like, a good thing?"

Logan growled, "She's not a friend anymore. I'm going for a drive." He stalked out of the room and as the group sat in silence, they soon heard the revving of his motorcycle as he took off down the driveway.

"Can you believe she can suck out your soul?" Bobby sat in silence in the rec room with most of the other kids.

Kurt was looking out the window, almost as if he was excited about the coming doom.

He was.

"I don't care vhat kind of powers she has," he answered, "If she's as hot as the Professor claims, then I vill gladly be her zombie slave for all eternity!"

"Don't make me sick, Kurt; yawh'd fall for a department store dummy, hornball," Rouge was flipping moodily through the channels, trying to find something worth watching.

"Yeah Kurt," Kitty protested, "Does that mean you've, like, given up on me?"

"I'd never give up on Kit Kitty," he bamphed near her, leaning in for a smooch and she ran away.

"Ewww! Kurt! I only meant don't become a zombie and ditch the team! Get away from me!" she ran through the wall and out into the mansion, Kurt following after through the door.

Amara sighed, "Thank goodness, you peasants and your boorish entertainment sickens me."

"Then why don't you leave?" Roy shot at the 'royal'.

"Typical. I don't leave during discussions of war. Besides, doe doesn't have anyone to speak for her. I admire women of her kind and she was a goddess and deserves our respect. I think it is horrible of you all to be thinking about fighting her! Even though she is encroaching on my kingdom!"

"Kingdom my ass," Rouge muttered under her breath, finally having shut off the TV in desperation, "Do you realize how stupid ya'll sound? I am most likely a descendent of hers, but she has to be at least fifty times my strength!"
"Rogue's right," Scott put in, being the heroic leader-type, "All the teachers seemed upset with this news and even Logan looked unsure, which really makes me nervous. Like the Professor warned us: this is like nothing we have ever encountered."

A melodious voice suddenly came over the intercom at the gate, "Hello, Charles? It's me, Scarlett. Forgive me for showing up unexpectedly, but I wanted to have a quick visit with you. Might I come in?"

What do you think? Kinda short, I know. I tried to keep everything pretty balanced, but this still turned out to be a dialogue-intensive chapter. Oh well, that was a lot of information, and that's not even all of it! Most will remain a mystery for quite some time ::snicker:: Anyway, any comments are greatly appreciated. I accept compliments, constructive criticisms, bribes, flames, gifts, monetary donations, and sacrifices, don't hesitate to review!
