May the Best Telepath Win
Author’s Note: I intended this story to explore Scott and Jean’s relationship, and as a result, focus more of Jean, Scott, and Emma. Yet, as I wrote the fic, I grew increasingly interested in Emma’s diamond form, an element that caused Emma’s friendship with Rogue to transform into something more… intimate. Thus, not only is there action between the two telepaths and Cyclops, but Rogue and Emma forge an unlikely sexual and somewhat romantic bond. I never really liked her in the comics (or Jean and Scott for that matter), but I really enjoyed writing Emma into the Evolution canon. Unfortunately, I fear that Emma might seem a bit OOC. Reviews are appreciated…
Rated R for naughty scenes and dream sequences.
Pairings are/will be quite diverse, but will mainly focus on Scott/Jean/Emma/Rogue, with Scott/Jean, Emma/Rogue, Emma/Jean, Emma/Scott, Emma/Scott/Jean, hints of Rogue/Gambit, Rogue/Jean, Rogue/Scott, Rogue/Scott/Jean, Kitty/Colossus, etc.
“Have you heard the news?”
Jean Grey looked up from her studies to see Multiple Man (well, technically, still “Boy,” though he insisted on “Man”) running wild around the living room. He could barely sit on any normal day, but this was even worse. He had been at it for almost an hour. Jean knew, because she had been doing homework since school let out. Curious, Jean decided to investigate his sudden hyperactiveness. “What news?”
Jamie stopped in his tracks, turning to face the redhead. “Huh? You mean you haven’t heard?” A wide grin spread across his face. “A new recruit is coming to stay with us, and I heard it’s a girl! A really, really beautiful girl!”
“A girl, eh?” Jean Grey sighed. “You’re too young to worry about girls.”
“I am NOT!” he replied indignantly. “I’m thirteen, and that’s plenty old to be worrying about girls.” His brow furrowed in thought… or confusion. “In fact, when this new recruit comes I’m going to ask her to be my girlfriend!”
She watched him scamper off, presumably to plan how to woo the new girl. It was an amusing sight. Jamie was girl-crazy the minute he arrived at Xavier Institute, but each of his many love interests turned him down flat. ‘I wonder who’s going to break his heart this time,’ Jean mused.
“At least someone’s excited for a new member,” a voice said. “I just got back from the kitchen where Rogue threw a tantrum at the mere thought of sharing a bathroom with yet another student.”
Surprised, she looked up. Scott stood over her, smiling. She breathed a sigh of relief and kissed him gently. “Hey, Scott. Where have you been all day?”
Cyclops took a seat on the sofa beside her. “I’ve been in the Danger Room,” he replied. “If I’m going to lead the new recruits on the next mission I need to be in top shape.”
“Will the new girl be in on the action?”
He scratched his head. “Actually, I don’t know anymore than Jamie does. I do know that she’s a telepath and that she’s about our age. Given that, I don’t think she’ll fit in with the Runt Squad.”
Jean’s hand covered the giggle threatening to escape her lips. Most people
thought Scott a drag, but she thought him very clever – when he wasn’t too busy being the “responsible leader”, of course. That’s what she loved about him the most. For all his seriousness, he was funny when it counted. Witty, but not a clown. Unlike some people in the mansion…
“But don’t worry,” he said with sly smile, “no new recruit can ever be more beautiful than you.”
“I don’t know. She is a telepath. Perhaps she tries to trick you into thinking she’s the next Marilynn Monroe?”
“Doubtful,” he replied. “Besides, gentlemen prefer redheads.”
Scott stretched his right arm so that it draped across Jean’s shoulders. She closed her eyes and snuggled against him. “You’re so lame,” she teased, then gave a theatrical yawn. “I’m going to take a nap before I have to go over my outline for Telepathy 101 with the professor.”
“And I’m your pillow?”
“Mmm hmm,” she murmured sleepily. “You’re too comfy for me to move.”

The Institute was strangely busy considering it was three o’clock on a Saturday. Usually the kids would be running wild around Bayville. Jubilee and Tabitha should have been at the mall, yet Jean passed the two watching TV on her way to Xavier’s study. Even Rogue seemed to hang around the mansion when she could be reading in her room or shopping at the record store with Risty. ‘I wonder if this has anything to do with the new recruit…” She shrugged and rapped softly on the oak door.
‘Come in.’
She pushed the door open, but started when she a tall blonde standing in front of the professor’s desk.
“Ah, Jean,” Professor Xavier greeted. “You have impeccable timing. I’d like you to meet our newest member, Emma Frost. She’s a telepath as well.”
Jean extended her hand, but the girl in white did not accept the friendly invitation. Instead, she surveyed the girl coldly with ice blue eyes. “Charmed, I’m sure.”
“Likewise,” Jean replied with a nervous laugh.
“Jean, how would you like to take Emma on a tour around the mansion? With your similar powers and age, I suspect you two will get along swimmingly.”
She glanced at Emma warily. Jean was more than happy to be helpful, but it
didn’t seem like her fellow telepath wanted the help. ‘What an Ice Queen,’ she thought with an internal frown. Jean swore she saw a faint smirk on Emma’s painted lips, and wondered if the blonde had heard the mental remark. She was, after all, a telepath. “Sure, no problem, Professor,” Jean sang with a bright smile. “Where will she be staying?”
“Across the hall from Rogue and Shadowcat.”
Jean turned to the blonde mutant and motioned for her to follow. “Come on, we’ll drop your things off in your room first.” She then noticed the massive pile of bags in the professor’s office. “On second thought, I’ll have some of the boys move you in later.”
Jean said good-bye to her mentor, making him promise that they would go over her class outline later. Closing the door behind her, she started down the hallway. “First thing’s first. Let me show you to your room.”
“Rogue is the mutant who steals other mutant’s powers, am I correct?”
“‘Steal’ is kind of a strong word,” Jean answered defensively. “She’s sensitive about it, too, so I would suggest using the term ‘borrow’ around her.”
“And Shadowcat?”
“She can alter her molecular structure to ‘phase’ through solid matter like
walls or locked doors.”
“Are there any other telepaths here?”
“Just me, you, and Professor Xavier.”
“I see.”
The two women continued on their tour. Each time they came across a mutant, Emma
inquired about them. She did not care for information outside of things related to battle tactics. She never asked about a member’s real name or what they cared to do when they weren’t out saving the world from certain evil. But when they stumbled upon Scott Summers, Emma’s tune changed dramatically.
Emma glanced at the brown-haired boy dressed in chinos and a red polo with definite approval. He stood with his back perfectly erect and his chin held high – which meant he was definitely the leader. The man certainly had the physical capacity with all the muscles he boasted, which Emma was quick to note. Then there were a pair of ruby sunglasses, something she found odd for a person to wear indoors.
“Who’s he?”
“He who?” Jean asked, breaking her “Welcome to Xavier Institute” speech that Emma had obviously not heard. Her gaze floated to Cyclops, ignoring the burning jealousy that threatened to manifest at the thought of this beautiful blonde taking an interest in her boyfriend. “That’s Scott Summers. His codename’s Cyclops.”
“He’s cute,” Emma breathed, admiring the view.
“He’s taken.”
“Really?” The blonde looked at Jean for the first time since they left Xavier’s office. “By whom?”
“Me,” Jean hissed. She hated the hostility that escaped. It was so childish, really. She trusted Scott. And Emma certainly couldn’t have known that they were an item. She just arrived. But here Jean was, staking her claim like Tarzan. “Me Jean. Scott mine!” Wasn’t she better than that?
“Oh?” Emma arched her eyebrow in a look that clearly read ‘I don’t believe you’.
Jean sighed. Deciding to swallow her pride and make the new recruit feel welcome, she waved over Scott. “Hey, Scott! I’d like to introduce you to the newest addition to the team.”
Scott smiled and walked over to the two girls. He extended a hand to the stranger. “I’m Scott Summers. Pleased to meet you.”
To Jean’s surprise, Emma very calmly placed her hand in Scott’s and gave a small handshake. “The name’s Emma Frost,” she said, though Jean couldn’t help but notice the kittenish mien she had suddenly adopted. “And I am very pleased to meet you. I can only help that we can be further acquainted.”
He blushed, and placed his hand on the back of his neck – a nervous habit. “Yeah, sure.”
Emma smiled and pivoted to face Jean. “Thank you very much for the tour, Miss Grey. If you don’t mind, I’d like to set up my things in my new room now.”
“Of course. I’ll get someone to bring your things in right away.”
As Jean watched Emma sashay down the hallway, an unfamiliar feeling seized her. She felt threatened. She was jealous. And… Scott actually seemed to like Emma. For the first time in her life, Jean Grey felt that some one could actually come between her and Cyclops.
