The New Kid

NOTE: I’ve seen only a few episodes of X-Men Evolution, but I couldn’t resist doing a story with that cute little gothic version of Rogue. Also, I realize the events and the time lines wouldn’t add up, but shut up. It’s just for fun. Plus, this is just a warm up. I’ll add more on to it later. Please let me know what you think in your reviews.

“Her classmates called her a witch. She could make things happen with her mind. She could even kill people just by wishing for it.” -Heather, Silent Hill 3

Several decades ago, in a sleepy and remote tourist town known as Silent Hill, a female child was born to Dahlia Gillespie. Alessa, as Dahlia would name her, displayed incredible powers at a very early age. It was be many more years before the existence of mutants was revealed to the general public. If it was common knowledge by this time, Dahlia may not have seen this only as a chance to exploit her only child to conjure up the ancient god of the town.....

This child would later suffer through an intricate cycle of deaths and resurrections. This is the story of her latest incarnation.....

It was the usual weekend at the institute. Nothing really out of the ordinary, well out of the ordinary for this place at least. Rogue was swamped with homework, as were the others. Kitty had already finished hers up and although Rogue was antisocial, she was more than willing to allow Kitty to help her. She actually got finished sooner than expected and figured she’d have the rest of the day to do....well, nothing. It wasn’t to be though.

Kitty had left some time ago, and Rogue lay on her bed, heavy metal blaring into her headphones. She sighed, thinking of things she wished she wasn’t so tempted to think about. Scott. So sweet and affectionate toward her. She wished so desperately she could’ve done something, couldn’t done anything to take their friendship to something beyond. Take it there and make it work. That was so long ago. Like a million years ago but at the same time it felt just like yesterday. Scott was her first big crush though. In a way, she’d always hold him in a special place in her heart. She felt she’d never truly get over him. And Remy. Southern raised and exploited by his parents. He was a kindred spirit if Rogue ever met one but at the same time he’d used her to suit his own means once before. She couldn’t trust him. Her heart told her to, told her to let her defenses down but....that was out of the question. She only trusted her gut. Speaking of which.

She felt a familiar ache and rumbling in her stomach. She couldn’t stay in here forever and bask in...nothing. So she resolved to go out and eat something. Something sugary should do. She sighed, turning off her music and taking off the headphones. Her joints popped as she moved. She didn’t think she’d been sitting there for that long but looked at the clock and realized a couple of hours had passed.

“Time flies when yer havin’ fun.”

She muttered the phrase in a cynical way, as was most her other sarcastic remarks. She was already decent enough to go out in public. Not like she had to get dressed or anything.

She made her way toward the kitchen, resolving what to eat on the way. She hoped there was still some of that chocolatey cereal left. Then again, the good stuff tends to go pretty fast. She thought about going out one day to buy her own and then hiding it somewhere. That would be nice, but she wondered if she could trust Kitty with it. While she was pondering this, she passed by the newest student to the institute. Rogue was pretty confined to herself, but did know what was going on with current events. She didn’t know the new recruit’s name, just knew that he was new. She didn’t think anything of him until he passed by her.

Despite being antisocial and withdrawn, Rogue still managed to get a few looks and hellos out of others as she passed by them in the halls. Hell, she even found herself greeting them first, but rarely. She’d at least look at them. He was different though. He wore all black, not a spec of other color, but didn’t have the facial make up or strange hair that a typical “goth” would have. He didn’t even look at her when he passed. Like she didn’t exist. And the look on his face. He looked like nothing mattered. Like a mannequin. Like he didn’t have a soul or something. So blank but also....so sad.

Rogue knew that their mutations all brought with it its own share of pain, particularly hers. He seemed so much different though. He looked truly disturbed by whatever he’d been through. Still, he did look kind of cute. She remembered when she was new to this and how nice it was to have someone to help her out. She felt it might be a major invasion of his space but figured it couldn’t hurt to try. She turned around and started to walk after him. She almost announced a hello when he turned around.

It looked like he was about to say something to her, and from the look on his face he seem genuinely annoyed by her gesture. His mouth opened but immediately closed. Rogue couldn’t place the look on his face, but it almost looked as if she reminded him or someone. In truth, she did spark a memory of his, but not necessary of someone but rather an event.

“Are you still following me? Do I have to scream?”

The stranger clad in black rolled his eyes, turned around and walked off. “Ouch,” Rogue thought to herself. Normally, she was the one pushing others away. It was new for her to be on the other end. She pondered for a moment what to do next. Should she really give him his space or was this a weird way of crying out for help?

“Ah don’t wanna push ‘im.”

She was surprised when she realized she’d whispered that out loud. She decided against confronting the strange boy further and just went about her business. She made her way to the kitchen, with the intention of treating herself to some chocolatey sugary treats.

“Aw damn it. Ah knew they’d be out of ‘em.”

An hour or so had passed since Rogue had finished with her snack. Once again, she lay sprawled out across her bed. Her headphones weren’t on this time. She wasn’t in the mood for music. No, she couldn’t get that boy off her mind. His dark look reminded her a lot of herself. He had amber colored eyes, something Rogue’d never seen before. Maybe he had problems much worse than herself and the others. Then again, maybe he was just a big pussy that couldn’t handle things. She almost slapped herself when she realized she was thinking about some boy again.

She decided better of it though. She wasn’t exactly attracted to him. No, she was just very intrigued. Maybe she still had a little bit of Jean’s empathic abilities in her, but she could plainly sense some sort of weird vibes coming off of him. Unpleasant ones. But the Professor kept records of the origins of every member here. Maybe he could fill her in on some things. She knew he might be tight lipped about it, due to student confidentiality, but it was her best shot. Getting up from her bed, she made her way out. Sure enough, she found the Professor in his study.

“Knock knock.”

“Rogue? How can I help you?”

“Nothin’ much. It’s just that Ah’ve just been wonderin’ about the new boy. Ya know, he kinda gives off weird vibes or somethin’.”

“Ah yes. You must mean Donovan.”

He sighed and put away whatever book it was he was reading from.

“He was raised in an orphanage. They found him as a baby, abandoned in some basket along side the road. All the other orphans were afraid of him growing up. He demonstrated powers the likes of which they’d never seen before. I haven’t had a talk with him about it yet, but I suspect maybe something similar to Wanda’s hexing ability. Apparently....he can make people get hurt or even die just by wishing for it.”

“Oh -dang-!”

“Yes, but there wasn’t any evidence to convict him. When I found out about the poor boy, I immediately set about taking him in. To my knowledge, he hasn’t said more than a few words to anyone here, and to no one else except me. I pity him. He allowed me to dive into his mind once. I didn’t get very far. The moment I tried to read him....I...”

He stopped, flinching up his eye lids.

“Horrible, disgusting images.”

He placed his hand over his stomach, as though about to vomit.

“That’s all I know of him. Rogue, I’m delighted you seem to want to be his friend, but I warn you. There’s something more than strange about him. Every time I feel his presence, I feel as if there are two beings inside one body. He has something inside him. Something sickening. I’ve tried to confront him about it but....he wont let me help.”

“Ah understand, professer. Ah’ll be careful.”

Rogue turned to leave but the Professor stopped her.

“Wait. There is something else. Not only his name, but I managed to get the name “Silent Hill” out of him. I’ve looked it up on the internet. I believe that’s where he’s from.”

“Thanks.”

She turned to leave again and wasn’t stopped this time. Maybe she should take a cue from the Professor and look up this “Silent Hill” on the internet herself.
