It was around ten at night as Scott Summers drove his car to lookout point. He and his girlfriend, Jean Grey, were on a special assignment from the Professor. Scott and Jean sat quietly on the hood, admiring the majestic view of Bayville in the distance. They snuggled close as they so often did in their private time. It was nice getting away from it all. With college, training, and missions it was often hard finding a moment to be together, but they had managed to make the best of it. It’s part of what made their relationship so strong and solid.

“Nice night, isn’t it?” commented Scott, slipping his arm around Jean’s waist.

“The one and only,” she said, stepping out into the clearing, “Sorry I’m late. I had to hitchhike.”

“But why were you hiding in the bushes?” asked Scott.

“And moreover, why were you guarding your mind?” added Jean.

“To keep you on your toes, I guess,” she shrugged, “I learned a thing or two about shielding in the Brotherhood, so I wanted to see for myself if it worked. Guess it did.”

It was an odd mannerism, even for Tabitha. But Scott and Jean brushed it off. It was good to see that Tabitha had not gone with the Brotherhood to Genosha. “So I guess you guys are here on behalf of the Professor, am I right?” she said casually as she walked up to the car.

“Yeah, he called you didn’t he?” inquired Jean.

“He did. But I needed time to think about the offer.”

“What’s there to think about?” said Scott, “The Brotherhood is gone. They left for Genosha. It’s a dangerous world out there, Tabitha. You know that.”

“Yeah, yeah…I’ve heard it all before,” she said, rolling her eyes, “But it’s not that simple. Keep in mind I’ve still got that carnival thing to answer for and a few other indiscretions that I’ve yet to handle.”

“We’re willing to look past them if you just give it a chance, Tabby,” said Jean in a coaxing tone, “A lot of people miss you…especially Kitty and Amara.”

“I know…” she sighed, “And believe me, I miss them too.”

“So why not come back?” said Scott, “I know you see us as being really stiff about rules and stuff, but you have to understand why they’re there. It’s a complicated world Tabitha. Without rules we’d…”

Tabitha cast Scott and Jean the mischievous grin they knew so well. They knew she never flashed that evil smile of hers without good reason. Suddenly, it became clear why she had kept her mind guarded.

“It’s like this…the Professor already made the offer over the phone and I accepted,” she explained, much to the surprise of the young couple.

“Accepted?” said Scott with a confused look, “Then why did you ask to meet us?”

“That was the condition I gave old Charley,” she went on, “I told him to tell you two that I needed to discuss this and he agreed. And now that you’re here, I can get to the point.”

Scott and Jean exchanged worried glances. There was never any telling just what this offbeat mutant blonde would do. But nevertheless, they listened.
