Summary: Emma gets an emergency call from Irene
Emma looked at the fragments of memory leaking out from behind the repression barrier that Irene's mind had hastily erected around the source of the trauma. The barrier, she observed, was second only to a telepaths, she'd had training, but whatever it was if it was traumatic enough to leak through that kind of barrier... it was bad.
The fragments were fuzzy and incomplete records from her senses, Cable’s hand on a heavily scared, maybe a burn victim’s, shoulder? With another fragment came another piece of the puzzle this one was a repeating motion. The last fragment Emma caught was a deep moan, Cable or maybe that burn victim he was consoling?
Irene always seemed so level headed, she had reported on all manor of man and mutant made atrocities but a former burn victim, making her repress this much? There had to be much, much more.
Emma couldn't tap the barrier directly; it would be much too traumatic for Irene when an easier way to surreptitiously slip into those memories existed. Go back to this morning, and work forward, skim the day's memories and she could follow the linkages between them behind the barrier.
Irene had started the day with breakfast, going over some of the reports separating them into important and... Well they would be read, just after everything else was done. Taking them and a pitcher of juice along with a few glasses on a tray she headed up the building towards Cable's penthouse.
When she got there, she almost didn’t believe it, she heard him laughing. Laughing. And someone else was laughing with him. When she pressed the door chime, the door slid open, privacy mode obviously not engaged, and she saw Cable and that idiotic companion of his, the former psychotic killer, who seemingly the only one completely without doubts about former part of that was Cable himself. Deadpool was sitting there laughing with him.
Cable's laugh was short, but Deadpool was holding his sides, his breathing was short, obviously he’d thought whatever joke he made was a real gut buster. But usually a Gut Buster with Deadpool, well Irene had guessed anyway, was him talking about small explosive device detonated in someone’s gut, but Cable wouldn't have had the short laugh, or the slight grin if that were the case.
Emma started skimming forward through the day, seeing things like lunch, talks on Providence's many patios, and as the she felt herself approaching what happened she reintegrated herself into the memory.
Irene was worried, Cable was late, and Cable was never late. The last time he was late, the Skornn, which Deadpool had explained, at length, against her protests, that it was with a K and two Ns, had been involved. Deadpool’s rant on that just went on and on, the only reason she had remained sane was because Cable rescued her. He’d seen her desperation and kindly said something about missing Deadpool’s gravelly Demi Moore voice over lunch.
Irene had noticed that lately they had been eating together, which was a reason for her fewer lunches with Cable, how Cable stood that man’s company, let alone his table manners, she couldn’t fathom. Deadpool completely forgot about his long rant about the Skornn, and started a friendly argument with Cable about it being Demee not Demi as Cable led him away.
She pulled up the security cameras in Cables entertaining area. She began fastforwarding; since she left it was just Cable and Deadpool sitting talking. They left, and then came back with lunch, a little after Deadpool had fallen asleep, strangely not on Cable’s couch but on his coffee table. Cable picked up the stack of reports she’d dropped off that morning and began reading through them, annotating them where necessary. Deadpool woke up as Cable put down the last of the reports, Cable left and then quickly returned with coffee.
Deadpool looked grateful for the coffee, and made his Irish, very Irish. Ireland wasn't as Irish as his coffee. Why the hell didn't these things have sound! Irene demanded of the universe, on screen she noticed that their body language was gradually changing, the tone of their conversation obviously changing, but to what?
Deadpool’s mask really was expressive if you watched it closely enough. He looked ever increasingly less sure of himself as the conversation went on. Cable had a little serene grin; whatever they were talking about wasn't fazing him in the least.
Cable said something and the conversation stopped. Nothing, absolutely nothing, moved, Cable, she assumed, was waiting for Deadpool to respond to him. Deadpool pulled of his mask and tried to stare Cable down, while saying something.
Cable put his hand on top of Deadpool’s as he said something.
Then, terror swept through her, Deadpool pounced off his chair grabbling Cable and barreling off Camera. She cycled through the other cameras, but none had a better view.
She'd warned Cable, she'd warned him! Just because you 'fixed' him, doesn't mean he's not still a psychopath, but he hadn't listened. He wouldn't listen, that human shaped cesspool had become Cable's, she didn't know, pet project, cause, or maybe even, she shuddered at the thought, a friend. Whatever the reason, he had been completely blind to the risks, which had now proved to be a certainty.
Emma felt those thoughts Irene had had as she ran to Cable's door as if they were her own. Irene ran her security card over the scanner, force opening the door, which slid open as silently as ever.
Emma felt the barrier, it had kicked in here just before whatever had happened, but she had integrated herself well enough in the memory to get past it. But now that the time was upon her, now the big reveal was about to happen, she wasn't sure she wanted to know. She separated slightly from the memory, if a hardened journalist could be affected this way, it had to be beyond an atrocity, probably a true crime against nature.
Had Deadpool strung Cable's intestines around the room like Christmas lights? Even Emma would admit that Cable was a positive force for change in the world. But her curiosity was piqued, she had to know, Emma remerged herself into Irene's memory. Irene slowly stuck her head out from behind the wall, glancing through the arch into Cable's bedroom.
Emma wished she could turn away, but she couldn't she was experiencing Irene's memory; she couldn't change it, no matter how much she wanted too. Not while she was still in them at least.
Cable's hands were running over Deadpool’s shoulders, his scared shoulders, and there was thrusting and Deadpool was really very flexible, but she'd never thought about how that would translate to this. He was kissing Cable while straddling him.
And Cable's moaning, it had been growing louder and louder, even muffled by what Emma and Irene assumed was Deadpool’s tongue. Irene's eye been drawn to the hands that were gripping ever tighter on Deadpool’s shoulder.
And then Nates hands squeezed, and the thrusting wound down.
Irene fled unnoticed.
The image of Cable… that final moment, it was burnt into Irene's subconscious; it kept popping up for the rest of afternoon. Irene’s attempts to banish it from her mind failed, nothing was getting rid of it, that's when she called Emma.
Emma disengaged from Irene's memory and pulled her into a close comforting hug, normally she wouldn't even think of doing that, but by god. She knew what the girl had gone through.
-~-Earlier-~-
Cable looked Deadpool in the eye; well he assumed he was, damn cowls stopped you from looking into someone’s eyes. He had to say it, something like this; he wouldn't let it go unsaid.
"Wade, I feel for you."
Deadpool stopped, a stillness settled over the room, absolutely nothing moved, until finally Deadpool pulled of his mask.
Cable could finally see those eyes; they looked even more hurt, more hurt then he’d ever seen them before. They were trying to make him back down.
"You expect me to believe you could love a face like this!"
Cable put his hand on top of Deadpool’s as he said, "Wade, I already do."
