Lol… And the title comes from an expression, being between the devil and the deep blue sea, which is just pretty much a nice way of saying between a rock and a hard place. Or SOL, lol.

Kurt watched her out of the corner of his eye, hiding his grin. She was chewing the eraser off the pencil and did not even seem to notice, even as she spat out the pink rubber bits every few seconds. He stretched his legs out and leaned back in the chair, crossing his arms over his chest as he considered her openly. Kitty was scratching away at the balance sheet, something she insisted on doing even after he pointed out and she conceded that doing it on the computer was not only faster but more efficient and less likely to result in eraser poisoning. Her bangs fell in her eyes and every few moments, she would blow them out of her face distractedly or shove them behind her ear. He tried to reach out once and do it for her, but she slapped his hand away without even looking up and continued carrying numbers and muttering to herself. “Schatz,” he began, only to have her glare at him briefly before returning to her column of numbers. Kurt frowned slightly and leaned forward, putting his head down on the desk, looking at her sideways. Kitty did not look up again as she murmured about minimum wage and utility bills. He sighed and pushed his own hair out of his eyes, letting his tail snake over to her chair and trace a barely-felt pattern up her back as far as he could reach. “Liebes,” he sighed. “You already know the answer. You’ve done this every day this week…”
She finally looked up and sighed, pushing the paper away and shoving the pencil into her ponytail. “I know… I guess I’m just hoping it’ll change.” She shrugged and smiled ruefully. “As it is, if we both get jobs and work full time and don’t spend anything except what the Professor gives us for spending money… We can get a place together in December.” She paused and added, “2005.”
He winced. “It can’t be that bad,” he began, then paused, seeing the considering expression settle on her features. “Nein, Liebes. We do not use the money your grandmother left you. Nein.” He shook his head firmly, laying his fingers on her wrist. “You want to save that, for just in case…”
“I know,” she sighed. “It’s very tempting… and you know it’s more than enough if I’m careful.” Kitty was ever mindful of every tiny dent she put in her inheritance, only mildly surprised when she received her bank statement every month and saw just how little her monthly help, now less than it had been almost a year ago, to Tabby seemed to affect the balance. She shifted in her chair and turned to face him, scooting back and lowering her head until she was mimicking his position, their faces only inches apart. “Are you sure you want to do this? There’s no rush, you know…”
“Ja, I know… and I’m sure. But,” he added, tracing the curve of her jaw with his fingertips, “I can wait. Saying we want to live together doesn’t mean we have to go do it right away. We’ve got all sorts of time…” He stretched to kiss her, pressing his lips to hers gently, almost chastely, before pulling away just enough to speak. “Besides, I think I might be able to survive this first year without you here every day.”
Kitty made a mewling noise of protest low in her throat. “Don’t remind me. I still need to finish packing.” She bumped her forehead against his and exhaled wearily. “I have to go to some stupid orientation next week after those final tests from Storm and Emma…”
Kurt tried to look happy but worried he was failing. “I’m sure it’ll be fun,” he offered, stroking her pony tail slowly. “You get to meet your roommate and see the campus…”
“You sound like Storm,” she groaned. “I don’t want to meet my roommate, I don’t want to see the campus. I’m there for school, not to socialize!”
Kurt sat up and frowned. “Who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend?”
Kitty sat up and rolled her eyes. “Ha ha ha. Droll. Very droll.” She slid her legs out to tangle with his, stroking the back of his calth hth her toes almost absently. “I just… don’t know,” she admitted, standing up and moving to sit in his lap, looping her arms around his neck and resting her head against his. She kissed his ear distractedly and continued as his arms came around her waist, “Two weeks ago, I was all about this program. Now, I don’t even want to leave the grounds!”
Kurt sighed and squeezed her tightly for a moment. “Katzchen, you can’t stay here forever. None of us can. We have to grow up sometime and part of that is leaving, even if it’s just for school. If you stayed here and just went to the city college, you’d always wonder what would have happened if you had taken the scholarship and gone to the university.” He reached up and gently turned her face to his. “I know you love me, Liebes, as much as I love you, but I will not be the reason you threw this away.”
Kitty colored slightly, embarrassed at her innermost motive being so transparent. “City College isn’t so bad,” she hazarded, only to be silenced by Kurt’s exasperated, loving expression. “Okay,” she sighed. “I won’t even think about staying here because of you then.”
He made a moue of mock-sadness. “You could at least protest a little,” he complained, hiding a smile when she elbowed him teasingly. “Hey! I’m fragile, you know!”
“Yeah, yeah,” she giggled, her good humor returning. “If you’re so fragile, what was all that pouncing this morning?”
“That wasn’t pouncing,” he sniffed. “It was an enthusiastic hug.”
“With nudity,” Kitty pointed out dryly, kissing his ear again. “Lots of nudity.”
Kurt growled at her and dove for her neck, holding her tightly despite her giggling and squirming as he nibbled and licked and kissed the sensitive flesh beneath her ear and along her jaw.
“Cheese and crackers!”
Kitty’s giggles died a gasping death as she leaned backwards in Kurt’s arms to frown at Todd. “ Knock first!” she demanded without preamble.
“Don’t do this in the study!” he shot back, glaring. He waited a beat and added. “Wow… you’re both dressed. Weird.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kurt asked querulously, easing Kitty off his lap and onto her feet before standing, positioning himself behind her to hide his obvious reaction.
“Usually, when people bust in on you guys, there’s a lot more blue ass than most people ever want to see,” Todd shuddered theatrically. “Me an’ Rogue are goin’ to the movies,” he continued, not letting Kurt speak. “ An’ she an’ Amara were supposed to babysit Lucas while the girls work nishifshifts… Kitty?”
Kitty sighed and nodded. “Okay, but I want the full amount this time… “ She did not add that she would just be returning it to Tabby anyway. She figured if Todd could not figure that out on his own, it was none of his business.
“Liebes, we had a date tonight,” Kurt complained.
“We’re gonna be back by ten,” Todd pointed out helpfully.
Kitty nodded to Kurt. “We can make the eleven o’clock.”
Kurt sighed and smiled tightly. “Okay, Katzchen. Anything for you.”
