Part Ten

Attack on Frost Enterprises
Part Ten

Jared hesitated only a second before gripping the case tighter and pushing himself off of their desk, curling his wings about his body and diving out of the window. After falling a few feet his wings expanded and, with the aid of a sudden air pocket and a few powerful flaps, he hovered just below the newly ruined window, waiting for Creed to make his exit. The case was stuffed into the back of his jeans snugly and he waited impatiently for the feral to escape the flames that were now licking along the window’s edge. “Hurry the fuck up, Victor!!” The worry was evident in his words but he fought to stay calm, remembering that this was Sabertooth! The mutant who couldn’t be killed- just like a friggen’ cockroach!

-

“GO!” came the growled command, really, what was the kid hanging around for? He couldn’t carry Creed; he weighted to damn much with his adimantium skeleton. Creed grabbed the bottom of the desk and flung it into the flames, knocking over the man with the thrower on his back and took off for the doorway. As much as he liked having the kid around, he had had to worry about him, but not now, now it was Sabretooth time! As he passed the downed man, Creed sliced threw the throwers tank, causing the whole room to ignite. A fireball cleared the way and he bolted, taking out as many guards as he could on his way.

-

“You fucking psychotic son of a bitch madman ass wipe!” Jared ranted furiously as he sped away from the window as fast as his wings could carry him, which could kick an Osprey’s feathered ass, and went into a nose dive, speeding away from the fire that exploded from the window he had been hovering under just a few seconds ago. He fumed silently as the first story’s rooftop came into view and he dropped down quickly, but in his haste misjudged the landing and ended up tumbling and flushing a lovely shade of red. Dammit, why couldn’t things ever go his way?

He stood up quickly and watched the doorways that he could see and the rest of the roof for signs of the other mutant, but there was no movement yet. Not even the sign of cop cars. He sent a hasty message to Adrienne and began pacing. ’I’m out, Creed’s still in though. Give me directions to the fastest route back to the hotel.’ As Jared paced he could feel the minor injuries he had received from the mission, but ignored them for now.

-

It was a good workout turning bad quickly as Creed neared the third floor and found yet another flame throwing bastard on the stairwell. The damage to his body was so extensive right now that if he took another hit with the flames he would go down, he knew it instinctively, his charred flesh was tingling and bullet wounds still bleeding. Creed needed to get out and did so the only way he knew how. Bolting toward the exit to the third floor, but still catching some of the flames, he ran for the nearest window and smashed full run right threw it. The landing was not as graceful as he had hoped it would have been, his legs giving out on him, Creed rolled through the street in front of the building, thankfully a paper truck stopped his rolling. The truck was destroyed, Creed was buried in it’s side and down for the count.

-

A loud crash sounded from one of the windows below and Jared heard the sickening thud of a body hitting concrete and the squealing of tires and the twisting of metal. “Victor!!” He yelled out and did not wait for Adrienne, jumping off of the ledge of the building to circle around until he spotted the wreck. “Fuck!” he cursed and swooped down over the street, not caring that people were starting to look sleepily from their windows to see what the commotion was all about. It was a horrible mess and the angel could barely distinguish metal from flesh.

A car stopped just behind the paper truck at that moment and Jared dove for it, landing on top of the roof with a crunch of more metal. He jumped off gracefully and yanked open the door, “Get going or your head’s gone,” he growled out to the driver, who quickly untangled himself from the seatbelt and bolted back down the street. Jared didn’t spar him another glance as he rolled the car over to where Creed now lay and pushed and pulled the feral into the back seat, wings utterly useless but twitching with annoyance at the comatose Creed’s lack of help.

Once Creed was loaded into the Saturn’s back seat, Jared went around to the driver’s side and tried to make the seat big enough to accommodate his wings; at least it hadn’t been a mini cooper, otherwise they’d have been screwed. “Hang on, you old fart…” Jared mumbled and punched the gas pedal. ’Adrienne, where are the woods from here? We need to get into hiding now!’

-

Things were moving fast… far too fast for Adrienne to keep up. She switched her forms from raven, to human, then finally, back to wolf. Almost immediately, she caught the scent of dead things – many of them – and she growled low in her throat. The pigheaded little bastards! Just like all men, really. Why must they insist on doing everything on their own?

Fine. Let the men enjoy the killings and the flush to their egos. She wished no part of it. They wanted her out of the fight, then so be it. Honestly, why had she felt the least bit of concern for these idiots?

Well, in the meantime, there was a damn awful lot of expensive shit in this room, wasn’t there? Information stored on these computers that, surely, someone illegal out there would pay handsomely for. She returned to human form.

Searching the draws, she discovered a few flash drives, twenty gigs each. Running quickly to five separate computers, one computer for one FD, she downloaded as much as she could, barely sparing each folder/drive a second glance before downloading. The whole process, thanks to how far advanced technology has come in the past years, took only a minute to complete. Each flash drive was small, hardly bigger than her thumb, and she stuffed each into her pocket. Later, when she had the chance, she would look them over and decide what to sell. Unknown to both the killing machines a few floors above her, she had her own connections separate from them.

This accomplished, she dove for the window, outstretching her arms and angling her land to be feet first. She partially shifted her arms into wings – more akin to a flying squirrel’s than a raven’s – and landed smoothly on her feet, bearing most of the momentum in her calves and feet.

She shifted entirely to raven and flew to the roof of the first floor, and from there to the top of the building. ‘Keep watch’, they say, ‘be the lookout’. Fine, she would listen. If they died in there than she could not be –

‘I’m out, Creed’s still in though. Give me directions to the fastest route back to the hotel.’

So she was a roadmap now? She felt her disgust for the pair heighten. She could be as lethal as was needed, aid them in their fighting, and yet she was forced outside. The ancient motto that ‘three was a crowd’ never seemed to fit any more than it did now. Creed and Jared had been partners for, what, five years now? And she’d only been with them a few months. Its obvious Creed was playing favorites here. Yet who had more to lose should Creed’s rage go awry? Her pack was in constant threat…

Either way, she didn’t answer Jared. All the commotion from inside – which she could hear better than Jared, no doubt – did not bode well for a gentle rendezvous to the hotel.

Her suspicions were not in vain. Soon enough, Creed came crashing through one of the windows, rolling about, and destroying a truck. Adrienne watched all this without surprise, calmly composed as a raven should be. It was only a matter of time before this became a bloodbath, and only a matter of time before the bloodbath became a desperate escape plan.

She glided down to the scene of the crash, watching Jared move Creed into the car. Only when the urgent thought-speak entered about her woods was she bolted from her unhurried glide. Switching from mere observer mode to active, she responded.

‘About fifteen miles from where we are…’ She didn’t know street directions, never cared to know. Adrienne did the only thing she could think of. Swooping down, she flew at a level where Jared was sure to see. ‘Just follow me.’ Adri would not, could not, think of the extent of Victor’s injuries. Doing so would only cause her worry, and when one is flying in front of a speeding car, she couldn’t afford to be distracted.

-

Jared followed along behind the raven that flew in and out of his line of sight, the car going easily above eighty-five as they raced through street after street. Her absences had been noted, but pushed to the side when all of the commotion had started, and later he would apologize properly to the woman- but right now his entire brain was focused on getting to the woods as fast as possible without getting into an accident. Theses were miles Jared had ever driven in his life and he had to stop himself from asking ’Are we there yet?’ over and over. Thankfully the roads were free of traffic because of the late hour, so all he had to worry about was wandering drunks and light poles.

-

The worried angel needn’t have spoken his worries aloud, or even in thought-speak, for Adri to know they existed. So long as he kept his mind focused on her, his worry, and his speed, then they would be there before the anxiety about the lengthy drive could begin.

After unknown lengths of time – neither bird nor angel were, after all, looking at their respective watches – they soon arrived at the forested area. The road did not lead directly into it – Adri would never allow it – so it was necessary to veer off-road.

{This might be a bumpy ride…} she warned. What Jared was driving on was natural ground, grass and weeds, which lead into the forest. The stretch would lead him inside the tall trees, but they were too numerous for a car to travel through. The spot was mostly secluded, but sure as hell not safe. Any passing helicopter or plane would see the car, plain as day. However, the place was good for the night.

Adri swooped down, returned to human shape as she did, and stood by one of the trees. “This will do for the night, but its not entirely safe. You two will need to be gone by tomorrow morning; afternoon, at the latest.”

She paused, only then realizing that, with Creed momentarily out of the picture, and considering this was her woods, that left her as the alpha.

“Any way my pack can assist you?” Adri questioned Jared.

A/N: Coming up next- Jared and Adrienne come close to something resembling friendship… Say “Aww” and the angel has assured me that he will shoot you in the butt. =p
