Chapter 9
"That's a relief." He said. "Mein Gott, I thought you were going to kill me in the danger room." She giggled and he gestured to the bed for her to sit. He pulled the chair over from tesk esk and straddled it, facing her. Kitty felt suddenly awkward.
"Um, it's going to sound a little late now, but I wasn't planning any of that stuff today." She blushed and flexed her bare feet. "I'm also not the kind of girl who attacks men and tries to get them to …um… you know."
"I know, Liebchen." He said. "And I want you to know that I'm not usually like that either. I prefer a more gentle approach to lovemaking." His frankness made Kitty's heart pound. She flexed her feet again and nodded. "Are your feet cramped?" Kurt asked.
"A little bit." She admitted.
"Let the fuzzy one help you relax so we can talk a little easier." He moved to sit on the floor and took her right foot into his lap. He began to rub her heels with deep, gentle strokes and avoided tickling her. "Tell me about what happened with Lance today." It was very much like their old conversations; they would watch movies or t.v. and talk about their lives away from school and the mansion.
"I told him a while back that I was thinking of getting my own place once I'd graduated. I just feel like I want some privacy from time to time." Kurt nodded, sliding his strong fingers along her instep. "When I brought it up today he acted like such an asshole. He said I was planning things for him and he felt crowded. He said he needed some space and he'd let me know what was going on once he's had time to think things through." She folded her arms across her breasts and curled her toes in agitation. "Like I'm supposed to put my life on hold while he figures out whether or not he wants me to continue to come over to that dump he lives in and put up with Pietro's bad behavior."
"What did Pietro do?" Kurt asked, working the tension out of her toes.
"He'd always make stupid catcalls when I come in, and I know the little pervert was spying on us sometimes." She shuddered in disgust. "But at least I don't have to go back there anymore."
"Did you love Lance?" The question fell heavily from Kurt's lips. Kitty considered it for a moment.
"I wanted to, Fuzzy. I really did. I knew there was a decent guy underneath all the bad habits. The man who had some leadership qualities, the man who risked the wrath of people he hated to try living here, and the man who eventually showed up to fight Appocolypse with us." She sighed. "But he never lead anyone, he didn't stick it out here, and he doesn't do the right thing most of the time."
"Sounds frustrating to care for someone and have them let you down."
"That's just it, Kurt, He never made any promises or even any effort to be a better person." She shrugged as he picked up her other foot. "I guess I was hoping to inspire him."
"You inspire *me*, Kitty." He said softly. "You always have. With your friendship, your determination, and your love." She smiled down at him.
"So what happened with you and Amanda?" Kurt shrugged and looked at her feet.
"I think the novelty of having a mutant for a boyfriend wore off. I get the feeling that she was looking through her photo album one day and realizedt I t I wouldn't fit into the picture anywhere."
"Oh, Fuzzy." She said. "If that bitch is so worried about people fitting in to her perfect family portrait, then she deserves some empty-headed loser who only looks good on film." She scowled for a moment then brightened. "Let's set her up with Lance." Kurt laughed so hard he winced as his healing lip cracked painfully.
