SUMMARY: Ok, I’ve dropped the lyrics, I got fed up. Warnings Jean bashing ahead. Yep I can’t stand Jean (much). Marie gets nervous over Jeans return as does Kitty, what does it entail for her and Logan’s new relationship? And what exactly IS wrong with Jean?
Chapter Eight
As Marie and Logan lay in each other’s arms, the woman entered her code into the gate, which swung open for her. Pulling the oversized coat tight around herself, she walked wearily up the drive towards the mansion. As she reached the steps, both Jubilee and Kitty came tumbling out of the front door. Both were so engrossed with wrestling with each other, that they didn’t notice the woman at first; it was Kitty’s gasp of recognition that alerted her friend that someone was there. Turning round Jubilee was shocked, “Doctor Grey?” she whispered. “Hello Jubilation, Katherine, how is everyone?” Jean Grey asked her two former students. “But you’re dead!” Kitty blurted out. “Not quite, although it was close, it’s taken me all this time just to get back home,” she replied.
Exchanging confused looks, both girls backed away from Jean. “Erm, would you like us to get the Professor?” Kitty asked. “That won’t be necessary, Kitty. Welcome home, Jean.” Charles Xavier manoeuvred his chair near the ramp down part of the stairs to the front door.
Holding out his hand at Jean, he smiled at her. Gratefully she stepped forward and accepted his hand and leaned over and gave her old mentor a hug.
Kitty looked at her best friend. She was upset because she and Scott had grown closer since Jean had supposedly died. What did her return mean for Kitty? Would Scott still take her out on dates? She had hoped that this weekend they would finally make love. Now she wasn’t so sure it would happen. Jubes reached over to her friend and wrapped her arms around her, then took her back inside. “We will have to tell Scott, hun, I don’t think he would like it if he found out from someone else about Jean.” Jubes told her.
“Yeah you’re right,” was her very quiet reply, “I’ll go find him now. You had better give Rogue the heads up, and don’t forget Logan loved Jean too.”
With these softly spoken words, Kitty walked away with her head hanging, deep in thought.
Jubilee ran up the stairs, she had to warn Rogue.
Logan’s room.
Marie was snuggled in Logan’s arms, the feeling of euphoria from earlier hadn’t left her. She wasn’t on cloud nine but on cloud ten! She now had everything she had ever dreamed for.
She was sleepy, wrapped up in Logan’s arms; the heat his body generated was enough to send her into a light doze.
Logan wasn’t amused when someone started banging on his bedroom door. “Rogue, are you in there? Please open up it’s me Jubes; I gotta talk to you it’s urgent.” Was heard through the thick wood of the bedroom door.
Growling, Logan got up and stalked to the door naked, but before he could open it Marie’s voice stopped him.
“You might want to put something on first; I don’t want my best friend to get an eyeful of my boyfriend in his birthday suit,” she giggled.
Grumbling under his breath, Logan grabbed a pair of sweats and pulled them on before yanking his bedroom door open. “What do you want?” he snarled at the girl in yellow in front of him.
“Is Rogue here?” she squeaked out.
“What’s wrong Jubes?” Marie asked from the bed as she pulled the sheet up higher.
“Ah shit, look you guy’s, you know I wouldn’t interrupt if it wasn’t important, but I gotta talk with Rogue, it’s life or death honest.” Logan looked over at Marie who shrugged at him.
She was curious to hear what her friend had to tell her. Looking put out Logan walked to his bathroom, “I’m gonna take a shower, you got ten minutes before I’m back out minus any clothing, he told her with a smirk.
Jubes eyes went wide at this and she audibly gulped.
“OK,” she squeaked.
Rushing over to the bed she really looked at Rogue for the first time and her eyes got even wider.
“Oh shit, you weren’t doing anything were you?”
“Nah, you’re ok. Good job you didn’t turn up ten minutes ago otherwise you would have.” Marie told her friend with a wink.
“Ok, what’s so urgent you had to batter down Logan’s door to tell me?”
Rogue was grinning at her friend, till she realised that her friend looked upset.
“Jubes, what is it?”
“I’m sorry but you’re not going to like this one bit, Doctor Grey is alive and well and downstairs right now.” Jubes got out in a rush.
“That’s not nice, Jubilee,” Marie said, clearly upset. “You know as well as I do she died at Alkali Lake.”
“But she didn’t. Me and Kitty have just seen her and she is downstairs with the Professor.”
“Oh, well, I suppose that’s good news then,” Marie said looked anything but pleased. In fact she looked really worried.
“This could spoil everything between me and Logan,” she said to her friend. Neither girl heard the bathroom door open, as both were wrapped up in their own thoughts.
Having heard the whole conversation, Logan entered the room and sat beside Marie.
“Hey, I can’t have my girl being upset now can I?” he asked as he pulled Marie in for a hug.
“I love you and only you, Rogue.”
Upon hearing this, Marie burst into tears and buried her head in Logan’s chest.
Looking at Marie’s friend in bewilderment, Logan wasn’t sure what to do!
Jubes did. “She just needs time, we all thought you loved Doctor Grey. In fact we had bets going on who would get you in bed first, Jean or Rogue. Glad to say the better woman won.” This was delivered with a smirk.
Logan looked really pissed at this admission.
“Well, you can pass it around that Rogue is moving in with me and I ain’t interested in any other woman,” he said grimly.
Marie raised her head to look at Logan.
“I love you, she said simply. Unable to resist, Logan lowered his head and kissed her.
Now Jubes was really embarrassed, “Ok, ok, I’m outta here, I really don’t want to see you two getting down and dirty when I could be chasing Remy.”
With that, Jubes bolted for the door and slammed it behind her.
Kitty found Scott in his office marking exam papers. Standing just inside the door, Kitty was unsure how to go about telling the man she loved that his once dead fiancée was in fact alive and well and cloistered in the Professor’s office at this moment in time.
Becoming aware that he was being watched, Scott put his pen down and looked up at Kitty.
He smiled at the young woman who in the last four month’s he had come to love dearly and had secretly hoped would agree to marry him when he asked her later that night.
With Jean it had taken him years to get her to agree, but it was different with Kitty.
Kitty made his heart race and his palms sweaty, he always had trouble thinking straight whenever she was near. Jean had been… well comfortable, was the only way he could describe it.
It had been eight month’s since the Alkali Lake incident, and Scott felt that yes it was time to move on; after all, he knew if it had been him Jean would have moved on with Logan in a matter of weeks.
‘Now, now, I shouldn’t be so bitchy.’ He thought to himself, I have Kitty to think about now.
With this he smiled at the love of his life, and then he frowned. Something was bothering her and quite bad too.
“What’s the matter, sweetheart? What’s bothering you so bad that…. Hey … don’t cry, come here.” Scott gathered Kitty in his arms and tried to soothe her.
“You have to go to the Professor’s office, there is someone there you need to see.” Kitty got out between sobs.
“Who?” Scott asked.
“Jean,” Kitty whispered back.
“But she died, she’s dead,” Scott muttered.
“Not anymore,” Kitty told him softly.
Scott’s mouth dropped open in disbelief.
As Storm approached Professor Xavier’s office she was surprised to find that a large crowd had gathered outside and some of the students appeared to be eavesdropping.
“Excuse me, but is that acceptable behaviour?,” she asked the students gathered around the door. “Erm sorry, Miss Munroe, but we all want to welcome Doctor Grey back to the School.”
“I beg your pardon?” Storm was really confused now.
“Really, children, that is most ...” She never got to finish what she was saying as the door opened and Jean stepped out.
“Hello, Ororo, it’s nice to see you again. How have you been keeping?” Jean asked rather stiffly. With a cry, Ororo wrapped her arms around the woman who used to be her best friend.
Jean wasn’t too sure how to handle her friend’s pleasure at seeing her. She stepped back and smiled woodenly at ‘Ro and looked around.
“Have you seen Scott anywhere? I would really just like to go back to our room, I am really tired,’ she told ‘Ro.
“Erm, he should be around here somewhere, but I think you and I need to have a talk first.” ‘Ro told her. But before she could lead Jean away, Scott came around the corner. What caused Jean to gasp was the fact Scott had his arm around Kitty’s waist.
Jeans eyes narrowed, this was a development that could make things easier for her in the long run. But then again, it could make things harder.
Pulling herself together, Jean plastered a large smile on her face and walked over to Scott and Kitty.
“Hello, Scott, Can we go somewhere to talk in private?” she asked.
“Sure, we need to talk.”
With this, Scott leaned over to Kitty and kissed her on the lips. “Won’t be long, sweetheart, wait for me?” he asked her.
Looking at Jean nervously, Kitty was surprised to say the least when Jean smiled reassuringly at her.
As Jean turned to follow Scott, her face twisted into a mask of fury. She hadn’t seen Rogue coming down the stairs so missed her shocked expression as she looked at Jean’s furious face.
Jean followed Scott down the corridor to his office, being a gentleman to the last; Scott held the door open for her.
Jean pulled out a chair and sat down. She smiled up at Scott; she was going to enjoy this.
“So, you have moved on I see. Well, I must say I am surprised at your choice, I thought you liked more mature women?” Jean got in first.
Scott’s lips narrowed in distaste. “Well, now that you’ve made your thoughts on the matter very clear, I think we should move on to a more serious subject.”
Jean smiled at Scott; it could only be described as sickly sweet.
“I want you to know that I didn’t enter into this relationship with Kitty lightly, I gave it a lot of thought and I really don’t want you to mess things up for me. You had died as far as everyone was concerned; I had to let you go and move on with my life. I hope that you can forgive me for this, but please, Jean, you know as well as I do that you won’t be on your own for long, you always did draw men like bees to honey.”
Jean looked thoughtfully at Scott, “You are right, of course, I know that I won’t be on my own for long. Besides, I already have someone in mind. You moving on has helped me a great deal, Scott. I know Logan will be happy at a shot at me now you’re out of the way.”
With this parting shot, Jean stood and quickly left Scott’s office. As she slammed his door, she totally missed that Rogue was standing within hearing of the once open door and the fact of the totally horrified expression on her face.
