Chapter 8
Kitty felt a little self-concious when she walked back through the house after leaving Kurt at the medical wing with Dr. McCoy. He'd given her attire a curious look but said nothing and handed her two band-aids for the bite on her shoulder. Though the house was nearly empty for the next few days, Kitty managed to run into every remaining resident. She held her head up, tugged the towel down over her bottom, and marched back to her room to change.
At dinner, Logan noted that Kitty was dressed primly in a gray pencil skirt that reached her knees and a pink sweater. Kurt looked a bit better than he had in the cell, but both looked embarassed. There were a few curious stares at the two friends who sat on opposite ends of the table; Kurt's lip was hard to hide, and Kitty's towel had revealed her injured state to all.
Logan stuck around after dinner to help Kitty with cleanup duty. He'd wanted the opportunity to speak with her after she rescued Kurt from his temporary prison. She didn't appear to be angry with him, but he broached the subject carefully.
"Punkin' I just wanted to say I'm sorry for any misunderstandings." He cleared his throat. She nodded and handed him a plate to load into the dishwasher. "All I saw was a pile of bloody rags on the floor and evidence of a struggle."
"I'm sorry that you were worried, Logan, and I'm sorry you ended up in the middle of Kurt's and my problems."
"Is he giving you a hard time about any of this?"
"No. He just feels guilty for being human." She sighed and wiped the remaining crumbs from the counter then turned to face him. "I don't like my private life to be anything but private. But you ended up there because of your concern so I'll let you in on a few things." She chewed her bottom lip for a moment. "First of all, prior to today, Kurt and I weren't more than friends; second, I don't usually go for the rough stuff; and third, it really just sort of *happened*."
"Believe it or not, Kid, I do know a little something about the relationships between men and women." Kitty blushed. "And I do understand how things can start out one way and end up another." He placed a gentle hand on her sore shoulder. "But promise me you'll take care to know when things *are* out of hand and ask for help."
"I can phase away if it ever does." Kitty said.
"Out of one fight, yes, but it’s a little tougher to get out of a relationship thats ots out of control."
"Kurt wouldn't abuse-"
"I'm not talking about the elf." He said. "I'm talking about guys like Alvers." He smiled at her gently when her face fell.
"You don't have to worry about me and Lance. We're definitely over."
"I know, but I didn't like the way it was going." When she looked surprised, he continued. "He would never come here to see you, he'd make you go to his house where he knew his friends disrespected you, and that tells a lot about who he's going to grow up to be."
"I guess you're right." She said. It was surprising how much insight a rarely verbal man like Logan could come up with. As if he read her thoughts, he ruffled her hair.
"I'm much older than I look, Punkin, and though I don't remember all of it, there are some things that stick." He kissed her forehead and sent her off to her room. Kitty stopped at Kurt's door and knocked softly. When he called out, she opened the door and walked in.
"Did Logan give you a talk?" Kurt asked, closing the book he'd been reading. Kitty nodded and gave him the gist of their conversation. Kurt raised his eyebrows. "He said all that to you?"
"Why? What did he say to you?" Kitty asked.
"Well, he didn't *say* much except that he was sorry for almost killing me and that I should be more careful about my teeth; but.... um… he stuck his claws out when he did it so I got the message pretty clear." Kurt was so deadpan that she couldn't help but laugh at the mock chagrin on his face. "I'm to treat you more carefully in the future."
"Fuzzy, always know how to make me smile." She walked over to him and kissed his cheek. "I came here to talk and not to threaten."
