Chapter 66

Oh man!! It's been a crazy couple of weeks. Sorry I haven't had time to post any chapters. Here's a couple. Happy Holidays!!

Chapter 66

Idiot! Idiot! Idiot!

Logan berated himself over and over, the miles eaten up by the motorcycle doing nothing to calm his self loathing, his weakness...his need for Kurt.

What the hell is wrong with you? What if ya go inta a rage and take it out on the elf?

His mind offered no answer, yet he’d let Kurt talk him into letting the kid come with him.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

He let out a snarl of anger, the wind dragging the sound away without Kurt hearing.

The elf’s body leaned against Logan’s, warm against his back. Kurt’s arms wound around his waist in a loose embrace, hands, now concealed by the hologram, resting on Logan’s thighs.

The kid was dozing, not so deep in sleep to fall off, but enough to relax and use Logan’s back as a resting place.

Heartache rolled through Logan’s chest...that he’d almost left Kurt behind...had almost made it away and now he couldn’t let go...no matter how dangerous he might become.

Dammit, elf! Why couldn’t ya just let me go?

Would you have let him go, if your rolls had been reversed?

Another snarling growl pushed through clenched teeth and Kurt stirred, feeling rather than hearing the rumble of Logan’s self disgust.

A hand slid up Logan’s side and back down, Kurt shifting with knowing care not to throw the bike off balance.

“When are we going to stop?” Kurt yelled into the wind.

“When I say so, that’s when,” Logan growled back.

“Bully.”

“Brat.”

Kurt leaned against Logan again, the helmet digging into Logan’s shoulder blade. But he ignored the minor irritation and they rode another fifty miles before stopping at a twenty four hour convenient store for gas.

“Wake up, sleepin’ beauty,” Logan said in a purposefully hard voice, not yet ready to let Kurt off the hook for ruining his plans for escape. “If ya gotta piss, do it now. We’re ridin’ for a while yet.”

Kurt sat up and worked off his helmet, black hair falling around his shoulders and into his eyes. The kid shoved at the strands and offered Logan a frown.

“Can’t we stop soon? Get a nice room with a nice soft bed for sleeping?”

Logan leaned in close, hardening his face to match his voice. “If ya wanted a nice soft bed, darlin’, ya should have stayed at the mansion. Ya know the way back if ya can’t take roughin’ it.”

Kurt’s expression went from stunned to angry to stoic in a matter of seconds. “I’ll go use the restroom.” Kurt climbed off the cycle and headed toward the store, but then he turned and caught Logan’s gaze, blue eyes rather than gold glinting like sapphires. “You’d better be here when I get back, Logan or you will have hell to pay when I catch up with you.”

Logan let out a snort and turned his back on Kurt, filling the gas tank. If only the kid knew how hard leaving him behind had been the last time. Logan didn’t have it in him to do it again...but Kurt didn’t need to know that just now.

The tank filled, Logan went inside and paid in cash. Kurt appeared beside him and without speaking Logan headed out the door, Kurt following.

He knew he was hurting the elf’s feelings acting like this, but Logan needed to keep some distance between them. Maybe if he pushed Kurt away enough, the kid would get tired of it and leave of his own accord. Maybe that would be for the best.

The heartache rolled through Logan again and the feeling was a flood rising to drowned him in emotion. He swallowed it down, the taste bitter in the back of his throat and climbed onto the bike.

Kurt said nothing while they pulled on helmets. Logan started the cycle and roared out of the parking lot with gravel flying.

The bike ate up road and miles, the night sky finally turning pink with dawn.

Kurt stirred behind him, awaking from another long doze. “Where are we going?” The words flew away from Logan’s ear, but he caught them and glanced at a road sign.

“South,” he yelled.

“South where?” Kurt yelled back.

“When we get there, I’ll let ya know.”

He felt Kurt’s breath rush out against his neck, irritation in the action.

But Logan didn’t have a better answer for the elf. He hadn’t thought. He’d just gone, riding the back roads and the highway signs had indicated south...so south they’d gone. He’d think about where later when the need to ride had settled down and he had time to think of just where he was going and what he thought he’d find there.

“Obstinate child!” Mystique hissed to herself. “Stupid little fool!”

She’d been watching, off and on, the Institute since The X-Men had rescued Logan from her tender administrations, hoping that the damage she’d done to his psyche would drive Logan to leave.

Taking a suite in one of the more luxurious hotels in Bayville, she’d relaxed in the warm waters of the whirlpool tub, slept between satin sheets and enjoyed the strong, gentle hands of a handsome masseuse, a reward for all her hard work and days and nights enduring that stark, rodent infested abandoned factory.

But something had prodded her to watch this night, sensing she’d be rewarded. Then, just as she was on the verge of celebration, that idiot son of hers had followed Logan, appearing out of nowhere to ruin her ultimate success.

She’d listened to Kurt’s irrational reasoning, love and trust his argument against Logan’s rage and potential deadliness.

And she couldn’t really blame Logan this time. He was trying to leave. No, it seemed it was her child who hadn’t learned the lesson she’d taught. Was the boy going to have to see Logan’s betrayal first hand to see the animal Logan truly was?

Mystique followed on her raven’s wings, caught off guard by this unexpected event. Keeping the motorcycle in sight, she flew over trees and maneuvered the night sky, working to keep up with the cycle’s speed.

Miles flew by and Mystique’s wings grew weary, yet she followed, pushing herself in a pursuit she hadn’t prepared for. She’d not lose this war. She’d not allow her son to become a victim of Logan’s lusts and rages. She had to find a way to convince Kurt that Logan was unredeemable.

Finally, Logan pulled into a gas station and Mystique found a tree nearby, resting her tired wings. She watched with narrowed eyes, listened with keen hearing. Logan’s body language and voice was hard and unyielding, perhaps still trying to rid himself of Kurt with harsh words and a cold shoulder. Yet, Kurt put up with it.

That boy was going to drive her crazy!

The motorcycle pulled out of the parking lot with gravel spraying and with a sigh of frustration, Mystique followed, hoping that by sun rise, Logan would stop to rest and she’d have time to think and plan for the next campaign to drive Kurt, her obstinate, foolish son, away from Logan.
