"Oh, no," Kitty groaned. "No, no, no, no, no!"
Kurt squeezed her hand tightly. "It's a mistake. Ja? A mistake?" He addressed the question to a large wolfish figure in front of the group. "You didn't lead us back to the room, did you?"
Remy sighed. "Oui. She did." He sighed loudly and closed his eyes. The place was unmistakable. It was the room where they had left Poena and Sabretooth... And it was quiet. "Mebbe dey gone."
"I don't think so," Amara sighed. "I would know if Poena was no more."
"Princess, she is NOT a goddess!" Lance bit out. "You know that!"
"Before you two get started," Rogue snapped, "we need to get out of here!" She glared at Lance, daring him to say one more word, and held up one menacing hand in Amara's direction, the threat obviously implied. "Rahne, get us OUT!"
"Not...yet..." Kitty looked oddly glazed over, her eyes going blank and still in her face. "Here we go," she murmured.
"Was?" Kurt felt a sharp pull behind his navel and suddenly regretted every time he teleported anyone without warning or without their permission. _Kitty's right... this does feel bad... _ Only seconds had passed but his body felt sorely abused when he blinked and they were in the large metal room again, facing an array of angry faces. Shaking off the haze, he stepped in front of Kitty and Rogue. "We just want to leave," he said sharply. "Let us leave and you can do whatever you need to..."
"It doesn't work like that," Shiva sighed, looking kindly on Kitty. "Kitty, come here."
"Why?" she asked softly. "What do you need me for now? Haven't you done enough to me?" She tilted her chin to look up at him accusingly, tired beyond measure both mentally and physically. "What else could you possibly need?" Kitty pushed several strands of hair from her eyes and sighed slowly. "Worst Jungian archetype ever."1
Shiva laughed and Kali cracked a smile, the skulls around her neck clicking as she shifted. "The end is here," Shiva said patiently. "And you are part of it."
Wanda shook her head violently. "No fucking way."
Kali laughed outright then. "Bind all you want, but that will not stop the inevitable." She swept her hand bearing the bloody blade down in an arc, flipping her wrist as she came level with Aggie and slicing sideways, cutting in one swift, steady motion through all three throats. Annie, Aggie and Ernie all looked momentarily stunned, Kitty and Rogue's sharp cries a counterpoint to the sibilant hiss that emanated from them as they seemed to wilt. Within seconds, they were no more, simply a pile of rust colored powder on the floor.
"They were kids!" Tabby shouted, shielding Lucas from Kali by turning her body sideways. The blade still caught the overhead light and Tabby was not about to let it get near her son. "You fucking..."
"Silence!" Shiva looked strange, different. His usually placid expression was now dark with anger and annoyance. "You cannot alter the course of a river any more than you can alter the end of all things!"
The powder at Kali's feet seemed to be moving. Kitty stared openly, her jaw dropping as she realized what was happening. "Kurt," she breathed. "Kurt..."
The sound of tearing metal rent the atmosphere of the room, the door being torn from it's hinges. "Hail, hail the gang's all here,2" Kurt muttered, wincing as the door crashed to the floor in the hallway outside the room. "Sheisse!"
Mystique, in her full blue glory, stood in the open doorway, her hands on her hips. Flanking her were Todd and Jamie, looking alternately queasy and proud. Piotr-Colossus-just looked blandly bored. "You are disobeying orders," she barked. Poena cringed. "You have failed us!"
Kali quirked and appraising brow at Mystique. "You order this one around? This false one?"
Mystique moved into the room in her usual fluid gait and stopped just short of Kali, ignoring the others as she did so, narrowing her world to simply her and this formidable (to say the least) figure. "I relay orders. I do not give them myself." She tilted her head as if to dare Kali to call her a liar. The powder at Kali's feet was definitely moving then, reforming itself into something whole and new. Mystique paid it no mind. "These...sorry excuses for life... are disobeying direct orders from their owner and commander. They will be dealt with."
Kitty was not sure if by 'these' she meant the fallen students or all of them in some ruse to get them free. She decided she did not care, so long as she was home in her bead before dawn, where she could convince herself it was all a bad dream. She saw movement out of the corner of her eye and nearly jumped until she realized it was Todd creeping forward. Rogue had become very still, not daring to move herself just in case it would trigger some reaction from Kali. Her eyes begged the question, though, Why are you with her? Did you go back again? Todd shook his head subtly and edged a bit more forward, putting himself in front of Kitty and Wanda. Rahne's slow tail wag at Jamie's presence drew Kali's eye. "It will all be over soon. Do not worry yourself so much."
Kitty felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach. Kali was only addressing her. _This is it, _ she thought. _I'm going to die. _Oddly, the thought did not fill her with dread but rather a strange, lovely calm. It was not resignation but more of a knowledge that she knew whatever happened next, she would be taken care of and be whole and without pain. "Just do it," she said flatly. "Do it now and get it over with." There was a loud intake of breath as several people in the room gasped and hissed. Kurt's urgent cry of her name fell on deaf ears as Kitty stepped forward, tilting her chin up to bare her throat. "I figured it out. They're first gens, maybe second. Surplus. They weren't destroyed. That's why Poena made Amara cut herself. She needed the blood to exist, to keep form turning into that stuff," she pointed to the powder on the floor. "The other three... they were a little better. They needed our emotional energy. They thrived off it...that was what they were made for, wasn't it? Easier to handle, no messy questions left in their wake." She was so close to Kali now that she could smell the cardamom on her skin, the faint white lily scent wafting from her hair as the goddess stood very still. "Shiva...he's not a figment of my stress anymore, is he? This is some cruel twist of Magneto's. He knows these things, God only knows how. He knew about my episodes last year and he got this model out of storage or something," she jerked her thumb at Shiva, smiling amusedly behind her, and continued. "You're an older gen if you need my blood to live. So take it. Get it over with. I'm tired, tired of it." Kitty was amazed at the words coming out of her own mouth. She could not believe, in all honesty, that she was asking Kali to kill her. She tried to find the words to countermand that statement but they did not come.
Kurt practically leapt forward, pushing past Mystique, to grab Kitty and pull her away. "If you so much as think about touching her," he began.
"You will what?" Kali narrowed her eyes. "You humans and your fears of death. Your friend is willing to sacrifice herself for the good of the group, just to get rid of me and mine, as it were. She's sorely misguided, yes, but a noble gesture nonetheless. Even you, in your chivalry, cannot deny that. She does not fear death or the end of things. She knows it is rebirth." Her expression became beautifully kind in that moment as she looked upon Kitty. "You are very intelligent. Very beautiful soul..." She lowered the blade and sighed. " And very wrong. I am no...gen... I am the Dark Mother..."
Poena chose that moment to move. With a barely voiced roar, she leapt for Kali. Sabretooth half-reached to stop her but in the end, simply stepped back and let it happen. Kali cried out a sheer berserker ululation and sliced outward and up. Poena's body fell one way, her head another. Amara's bloodcurdling scream made Rahne howl; the Nova Roman struggled against Lance's hard grasp, trying to reach for the gory remains. Kali bent and lifted the head by the hair, wrapping the strands around her fist. "Now," she said simply. "It is done."
Commotion in the hallway spilled into the room. Logan, Storm, Sean, Forge, Warren, Firestar, Evan, Pietro, Tarot and a host of Morlocks filled the place to capacity. Kali and Shiva were gone without a trace, the powder still shifting and trying to form a coherent shape. Phobos and Demos did not even twitch. "So..." Warren said after a long , tense moment. "We miss anything?"

A/N Next, the wrap up with Dr Beck and others. AND SMUT!!!!!!

1 Simpsons Comic Book Guy moment... "Worst episode ever!"
2 Old song... I think from the early part of the 1900's or the late 1800's.
