Comfort

Jean trudged furiously down the hall and stalked up the stairs to the attic, that was recently renovated to accommodate additional guests in the future and Logan. He found the more spacious rooms in the attic more comfortable and less crowded. Since he was more of a loner and wasn’t to thrilled of the close quarters down stairs, this was perfect for him. The fact that his room now, was big enough to have the old pool table in it, made it all the more appealing.

Rounding the corner and shuffling down the hall towards Logan’s room, Jean stopped. She stared vividly at his closed door, questioning herself if she should knock on his door or just go to the opposite side of the attic and slip into one of the vacant rooms. The last thing she wanted to do, was impose on him, feeling the way she was now.

She knew he cared for her and that her presence would be far from unwanted, but still she hesitated. Despite knowing how he felt, she couldn’t help but wonder why. If a once stable guy like Scott didn’t want her, what made her think an untamed guy like Logan would?

Feeling hurt, angry and unsure of herself, Jean sighed and turned to walk back down the hall. Before she was able to step away, the door to Logan’s room opened.

“Jean?”

Jean slowly turned around to face him and her eyes locked with his. He could see the anguish and frustration clouding her usual gentle gaze and his heart sank. He didn’t need to ask her what was wrong to know why she felt the way she did. Nor did he have to ask if she knew he knew because he could feel it. The only question now, was if she was pissed at him too for not telling her when he knew he should have.

Logan sighed heavily and swallowed hard, before walking towards her and stopping inches away from her.

“I’m sorry Jean,” he practically whispered, his voice raspy and shaky.

Seeing the sorrow and guilt in his eyes and knowing that he was not only apologizing for not telling her, but also for what she was going through, brought tears to her eyes. Dropping her bags on the floor, she threw her arms around him and sobbed against his chest. Logan wrapped his arms around her and held her tight. Seeing her like this not only broke his heart, but infuriated him as well. If it weren’t for his need to comfort Jean right now, he’d be heading straight for Scott who had dared to hurt the woman he loved.

“Everything will be okay…I promise you that,” Logan assured her, as he soothingly rubbed her back.

Despite Logan’s gentle touch and soft-spoken words, which helped to ease her tears, it didn’t help to erase the anger she felt. She wasn’t mad at him for not telling her, it was simply Scott’s actions that continued to upset her. Needing to express that anger, she swiftly pulled away from Logan and took a step back.

“Yeah know what I’d love to know Logan? What the hell is so fucking great about Kitty that has every guy wanting to fuck her?” Jean questioned bitterly.

Sensing her anger quickly rising, he knew he had to be careful with his answer. Even though what he was about to say was the truth, if he didn’t choose the right words, it could upset her even more.

“I wouldn’t know, cause I never wanted to,” Logan answered coolly.
“That’s a bunch of crap Logan! She’s a young, sexy woman, with a great body and big tits! She’s every guy’s fantasy and believe me I know,” she snapped harshly.
“Obviously you don’t, cause if you ever read my fantasies, you’d find only one woman in them and that’s you,” Logan growled defensively, the animal inside him feeding off Jean’s anger.
“But why? Why even bother with me, when you could have someone like Kitty to fuck when ever you wanted?” Jean fought back.
“Because Jean, there’s more to you than just a good fuck!” Logan snarled, “and if that was all I wanted from you, we wouldn’t be having this conversation, because I wouldn’t give two shits about it or you and you know that!”

Jean stepped back and stood there silently. She knew how he felt about her from the beginning, but her anger and feeling less than adequate, clouded it. Now she felt awful for questioning him and making him look like some emotionless horny bastard. She wanted to say she was sorry, but the words wouldn’t come out. Instead, she just looked away from him and tried to keep herself from crying again.

Logan cocked his head to the side, closed his eyes tightly and sighed heavily, upset at himself for snapping at Jean the way he did. The last thing she needed right now, was to be yelled at by someone who really didn’t have the right to. It wasn’t her fault that she felt the way she did or reacted the way she did, it was Scott’s.

Logan opened his eyes and stepped closer to Jean. Too upset to look at him, she continued to stare aimlessly at the floor.

“Look at me Jean,” he uttered softly, but despite his kind request, she wouldn’t.

Logan reached out and cupped her face, feeling the heat from her flushed cheeks. Gently he turned her to meet his gaze. Her misty green eyes that were overflowing with emotion looked back at him and Logan felt a tightness in his chest and a coarse lump form in his throat. Since he was never the type of guy who cried, from him, this was the closest thing to it.

“You are a beautiful, sexy woman, who could have any guy at your mercy…believe me, I know,” he began tenderly, “don’t let some asshole who can’t tell his brain from his dick, make you think otherwise.”

Jean couldn’t help but smile faintly at Logan’s choice of words. It just wouldn’t have been Logan, if he hadn’t added that last comment the way he did.

“How is it that the one person I thought would never hurt me did, and that the one person I thought could, never would?” Jean uttered softly.

A gentle smile formed on Logan’s face. It was true. No matter what anyone thought of him and his animal like tendencies, he’d never hurt her and risk loosing the one person that meant so much to him. She was his world, the only thing that made any kind of sense out of his unknowing, meaningless existence.

“…Because I love you.”
