Chapter 6
Though Kurt Wagner defied the laws of physics every day, until this moment, he'd never achieved flight without help. Though, technically, Logan was helping him this time. He hit the wall hard and landed in a heap on the floor. His head rang, but he didn't teleport to safety. He would not run away. He had to face what he'd done.
"Where is she?" Logan snarled, hauling the young man up by his shirt. "Is she alive?"
"Alive?" Kurt looked genuinely startled. "You haven't seen her?" A growl was his reply. "She was just going back to the danger room when I saw her last." The boy's nose and lip were bleeding from where he'd backhanded him. Feeling a homicidal impulse was not unusual, but Logan had the sense to register that something wasn't right here. With Professor Xavier and Jean Grey out of the mansion for Christmas break, he'd have to deal with this on his own. He dragged a barely concious Kurt to the basement and put him in a holding cell.
"Are you leaving me here?" The young man asked.
"I'm keeping you in a cage till I can get some answers, Wagner." The cells were of a design to hamper escape, even for a teleporter. Kurt didn't try. He just waited.
Kitty stood under the hot water for a few minutes, just easing the muscles in her neck and shoulders. There was something to be said for staying home during the holidays. She hadn't visited her parents this year for any of the Hebrew holidays. She told them it was because she had too much work to do, but she really felt out of place back home. All of her old friends no longer spoke to her, and she didn't want to feel excluded during Haunukah. She had seen her parents, but just for the odd weekend here and there.
Now she was grateful for the luxury of the large bathroom all to herself. She'd just finished shampooing her hair when the bathroom door swung open so hard it clunked against the wall. Kitty grabbed the nearest towel and held it up in front of herself. This would be the perfect opportunity for mutant haters to launch an attack on the mansion, it was very bad timing for the girl with no clothes, Kitty thought.
"Kitty!" The roar was familiar. "Come out here." It was Wolverine. She was so startled that she just stepped out of the shower and into view.
Logan had tracked Kitty as far as the showers and hadn't felt like waiting till she got out. When he'd called out to her she'd appeared, holding a towel in front of herself. He stepped forward and she automatically stepped back.
"Mr. Logan, what's going on?" She looked like a rabbit getting ready to take flight. He took a deep breath and calmed himself. The last thing she needed at a time like this was a man who made any movements of hostility toward her. He wished again that Jean was around. Not only was she a mind reader, but she was a woman. He was ill equipped to deal with Kitty, but the 'situation' had to be dealt with now.
"I was in the danger room." He said. Her face fell.
"I'm sorry you saw that Mr. Logan." She said. "But I did clean everything up." He raised an eyebrow. "I put everything back the way it was." Now he looked confused.
"But Kurt-"
"It's not Kurt's fault, I was the one who kept fighting." She said, wrapping the towel around herself carefully. This seemed to enrage Logan even more. He practically sputtered.
"You mean you're blaming yourself?" He was incredulous. Then he got a better look at her. Seizing her arm, he pulled her forward into the light. Her shoulders were bruised and battered. There were multiple scrapes on her elbows and knees. His eyes stopped on the punctures on her shoulder and he saw red. "Why are you protecting the man who raped you?"
