"Dude, your foot's on my neck!"
"Move your neck!"
"Where?" Todd gave Jamie a good, hard shove and sent him tumbling into the rosebushes.
A moment of silence passed, followed by a thorny "Ow..." One Jamie popped up out of the bushes, followed by two more. "Well, this should make it easier," he chirped."
"How ya figure?" Todd groaned, clearing the fence in an easy leap and landing lightly on the other side. "Now we got four of us, man."
"Give it a minute," Jamie muttered, turning to look at the dark boardinghouse. "I don't think anyone is even home." His multiples sauntered over to stand beside him, idly picking off bits of shrub and dirt. "Hey," he said, elbowing the one closest to him, "go check."
"Jamie!" Todd hissed, grabbing for the multiple and missing. "What the fuck are you doing?"
Jamie's hand shot out and grabbed Todd's tongue as it left his mouth. He silently thanked whoever was listening that slime was not involved this time. "He's gonna disappear soon anyway. If something gets him, no harm no foul."
Todd glared and Jamie smiled sheepishly, letting go of his tongue after a moment's hesitation. The slightly hunched teenager turned baleful eyes on his companion and hissed, "This place ain't got no high tech shit like the Institute! Just Freddy..." He paused, his mind whirling a mile a minute. Before, it had been up to all of them to be security for the boardinghouse, taking turns on watch until they realized no one was going to try to steal anything from arguably the most dilapidated house in Bayville still capable of sustaining life within. Since they had been gone, he noticed, things had changed. The place looked more well kempt--less haunted house, more lower middle class... There was actually grass on the lawn now and that creaky shutter looked secured to the side of the house now. _They been fixing this dump up... _ His eyes flickered over the front of the house and down to the sideyard where the multiple was disappearing into the shadows. Even as the wheels in his mind started to turn and mesh, the worst possible thing happened. A soft click preceded the rush of bright white light by a fraction of a second. The multiple froze and whirled to face Jamie again, eyes wide. Todd blinked and the dupe was gone, leaving him standing in a floodlight-illuminated yard next to Jamie and another multiple. "Move!" he barked, leaping for the fence again. Jamie yelped and scrambled after him, the final multiple vanishing as the front door banged open. Todd cleared the fence, landing on the other side and starting to run back the way they had come, along the shadowed alleyway to the street behind the house, a little used road more littered with potholes than anything else. Jamie clawed at the fence audibly, though he did not call for help.
"Erk!"
Todd spun around and hissed a curse under his breath. A silver arm was dragging Jamie back over the fence, the slight youth having barely reached the top. "Colossus. Of course. Had to be him. Not someone with nice soft bits to kick..."
Jamie kicked in futility. Piotr's arm held him so tightly it nearly cut off his breath. His feet struck hard metal, sending jarring pain up his legs and spine as his brain ordered him to use common sense but his body refused to listen, flailing ineffectually against Piotr's grip. "Lemme go!" he cried, relieved that his voice had not chosen at that moment to shoot up into a more feminine octave. "Put me down!"
"Nyet," Piotr sighed, sounding more resigned than vindictive. "You were trespassing on Brotherhood property. We have rules about this sort of thing."
Piotr stopped in his tracks and turned back towards the fence with a muttered invective. Todd was barreling towards them as if he meant to do serious harm. "Stop it, Toad!" he bellowed. "You'll get yourself hurt!"
Todd had too much forward momentum going to stop easily. He knew Piotr was right but he also felt a strong sense of duty to Jamie, and, he knew subconsciously, the Institute. Piotr loomed large in front of him, gleaming silver in the security lights. _This is so going to hurt... _
Jamie felt the shift and the sudden slackness in grip, though Piotr still held him fast over one shoulder. He had changed to his flesh form again and Todd ran headfirst into his stomach, sending them staggering back as Piotr's body absorbed the blow. Todd fell on his back on the ground, stunned for a moment until he flipped to his feet, dropping to a crouch in preparation to strike. Piotr rumbled, sounding more tired than menacing, "Toad, don't be stupid."
"Let him go," he snapped. "Put him down and go back inside and we never saw each other."
"Sorry," Piotr said, shrugging again, "I can't do that." He turned his back on Todd and began trudging to the house again.
Jamie began kicking again, making Piotr grunt and wince but otherwise doing no true harm. Todd sprinted after them, flinging himself between Piotr and the door. "Fuck you, rustbucket," Todd snarled. "I'm not gonna let you scare us."
"Toad," Piotr said patiently, setting Jamie on the porch before moving Todd bodily aside, "if you are not scared, you are not paying attention."1 He shoved the front door open and pushed both of them ahead of him into the brightly lit foyer. Mystique stood, her arms folded over her chest, at the foot of the stairs. "You were right," he muttered. "They sent recon."
Mystique glared at the two members of the Institute. "If this is recon, I'm a Girl Scout." She clucked her tongue impatiently and shrugged. "No matter at this point. Bring them. We're leaving in five minutes."
1 The original saying is "If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention.
