Chapter 53

I hope you all have had a better week than I've had. At least it's the weekend. Yay Rah.

Chapter 53

Kurt watched Logan eat with a mixture of surprise and bemusement. Ororo’s beef stew had made a decent meal, a hefty bowl for himself with crusty French bread with lots of butter. But Logan had scarfed down two bowls and had sent him back for another as well as practically inhaling a half a loaf of bread. He hadn’t expected the voraciousness of Logan’s appetite, but then perhaps this was normal for a man whose body healed itself at a remarkable rate, forced to do so over and over again in a short period of time.

Logan dropped the spoon into the empty bowl and sat back, closing his eyes in what looked like a satisfied fashion.

“That Ororo can cook,” Logan said. “I’ll give her that.”

“Yes,” Kurt replied. “She’s a very accomplished lady. I’m just glad it wasn’t Kitty’s cooking.”

Logan’s eyes popped open and narrowed, a memory suddenly clouding his gaze. Pushing out of his chair, Logan stalked away to the window and shoved back the drapes. He seemed to be soaking up the sun’s rays, breath coming deep and steady, but in a forced way.

Kurt rose and followed with unusual reluctance, the aura coming off of Logan sending a warning vibration through him. He stood close at Logan’s shoulder, making sure Logan was aware of his presence then he reached out and stroked a hand down Logan’s back, leaning in just a little to offer comfort.

Logan whirled on Kurt, grabbing him by the biceps. That narrowed gaze swept over Kurt, running down his body then back up to his face. Dark eyes bore into his as if searching Kurt’s soul.

Jerking him close, Logan buried his face in Kurt’s neck, nuzzling and sniffing. The hard grip left his arms, one going around his waist and down over his buttocks, the other working up his back to his hair and holding on.

Kurt stood still, allowing Logan free reign of his body. Perhaps Logan was assuring himself of Kurt’s reality...that it wasn’t Mystique playing some sick game. But Kurt felt as if he was in the grip of a bear and hoping the animal didn’t find him too tasty.

Lips touched his ear and ran along his neck. Fingers moved around to his face, the lips following and Logan’s mouth came down on Kurt’s, hard and unyielding. A hand cupped his ass and pulled him closer. Logan’s hard cock ground into his with wanting desire.

“Logan,” Kurt whispered around Logan’s mouth.

But Logan’s mouth pressed harder, a demanding tongue forcing Kurt’s mouth open.

Kurt wanted to give in, wanted to give Logan whatever he wanted, whatever he needed, but that same reluctance washed over Kurt again.

So much wasn’t right about this. So much felt wrong.

“Logan,” he managed to say again. “Please.”

He could teleport away, remove himself from Logan’s hold, yet Kurt feared his lover’s reaction, that Logan might think Kurt was rejecting him.

A knock at the door startled both of them, Logan looking up with a silent snarl on his lips.

“Relax,” Kurt offered, stroking a hand over Logan’s hair. “It’s all right. Let me answer the door.”

That same awful shudder ran through Logan and he pushed away, turning his back to the door.

Kurt stared a moment at his lover’s tense back. Logan’s shoulders hunched and his fists clenched. The knock came again and Kitty’s voice sounded on the other side of the door.

“Kurt? Logan?”

Kurt went and opened the door, blocking the opening against Kitty entering. “Hullo.”

“Hi,” she said, her eyes still reflecting the edges of fatigue. “I...just wanted to come by and see how Logan’s doing.”

Kurt glanced behind him and Logan stood as he’d left him. “He needs time, Kitty. Mystique really hurt him and he’s feeling...I don’t know...not up to seeing anyone. But I know he really appreciated you coming back from your vacation to help him.”

A worried expression settled on Kitty’s pretty face. “Like I said before, how could I have done anything less? He’s always been there for us. Every one of us.” Tears clouded her eyes and she sniffed and wiped at her face. “Well, tell him...I’m thinking of him...and you. After all, you’re the one who has to put up with him.”

Kitty grinned and Kurt grinned back. “I’ll tell him.”

“I’ll be leaving for home in the morning, but call if you need to talk. Anytime. You’ve got my cell number.”

“Will do.”

She started to turn then looked back at him with narrowed eyes. “I talked to Lance. He said you tried to kill him.”

Kurt bit his lip and did his best sheepish expression. “I...wasn’t trying to kill him. I just choked him. He’s exaggerating.”

“I think you put the fear of god into him. He hadn’t expected anything so...violent out of you.”

Kurt shrugged. “Lance has always thought me a wimp. He’s wrong.”

She grinned again. “He knows that now. And like I said, it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it once in a while. But try to save the rough stuff for when Lance really does something wrong. Okay?”

“Sure. Right.”

She reached up and laid a kiss on Kurt’s cheek and patted his arm. “It’ll get better. You know that. I’ll see you before I leave.”

Kurt nodded and watched Kitty turn and hurry away down the hall. With a sigh, he closed the door and turned back to Logan.

Logan was on the balcony now, leaning on the railing, hands gripping as if he might fall. A Spring breeze ruffled through Logan’s dark hair, lifting it like raven’s wings.

Kurt let out another sigh, deep and full of weariness bordering on wary and headed toward the balcony. He didn’t reach out to Logan this time, didn’t touch his lover. Turning, Kurt leaned back against the railing, a foot of distance between him and Logan. The breeze blew his hair forward around his face and he ran his fingers through the strands and held it back with one hand.

Logan still stared out across the manicured lawn, eyes so distant, Kurt had no idea where Logan’s mind dwelled. But from the look etched into Logan’s features, the place just might resemble hell.

“How did she do it, Logan?” Kurt asked. “How did she trap you?”

Logan’s staring eyes blinked and narrowed, shifting into focus but didn’t meet Kurt’s gaze. Hands flexed on the railing, tightening till big knuckles went white.

For a moment, Kurt thought Logan wasn’t going to answer, but he waited, trying for the patience he had lacked during the search.

“I gotta call,” Logan began, still not looking at Kurt. “An hour after you left for the airport. Rogue and Gambit had left a while before that.”

Kurt nodded, but said nothing.

“It was Rogue on the phone...or I thought it was Rogue. Sounded like her. Just like her. Said the Cajun had dumped her out in the middle of nowhere when he found out he couldn’t really touch her.”

“Oh,” Kurt injected, imagining Logan going to the rescue. Thinking he’d find Rogue and instead....

“She kept up the act long enough to draw me in,” Logan continued. “Then she pulled out a dart rifle and plugged me a half dozen times still lookin’ like Rogue.” A terrible smile touched Logan’s mouth, not reaching any other part of his features. “Didn’t take long then to figure out I’d been had.” Signature sarcasm sizzled in his tone. “She finally shifted into herself and she shot me a couple a more times. I went down and out until I woke chained up.”

Kurt started to reach out to Logan, hesitated and dropped his hand away.

“Now I got my own lover afraid ta touch me.”

“I’m not afraid,” Kurt countered. “I just don’t want to set off whatever it is that made you act like you did awhile a go.”

Logan’s head turned and gaze finally met his. “I smell fear, elf.” Logan sniffed and his eyes narrowed. “I smell it on you.”

“If I’m afraid, it’s of what she did to you. I’m afraid of what I don’t understand.” Kurt leaned forward, close enough to feel Logan’s body warmth. “Talk to me, Logan. Tell me what she did to you. Tell me how I can help you.”

Logan shook his head and looked away again, hands running back through his hair. “I’m not ready ta talk about it, elf. So just stop askin’. Okay? I don’t know when I’ll be ready ta talk...if ever.”

“Logan...please....”

Logan whirled on him, getting in Kurt’s face with a snarl. “I said, I’m not ready ta talk. Yer gonna have to live with that, darlin’.”

Kurt jerked back against the railing and sucked in a shaky breath. “All right.” He put up his hands in defense. “All right. I won’t ask anymore. At least not right now.”

Nostrils flared and Logan leaned closer. “That’s all I’m askin’, elf.” Arms slid around Kurt, pulling him close with restrained gentleness. “It was bad. That much I’ll tell ya.” Logan’s breath ruffled Kurt’s hair and he felt a kiss laid at the tip of his ear. “I’m not myself right now. There’s a lot of crap real close ta the surface.”

Kurt nodded against Logan’s neck, sensing that difference in Logan and fearing it all the more.
A hand slid down Kurt’s back, stroking over his ass and up his tail. The other worked into his hair and turned his face. Logan’s lips caught his but this time, the kiss held that same restrained gentleness, as if Logan had to fight back a more possessive stance.

Kurt gave into the embrace, reveling in Logan’s arms around him. He clutched the back of Logan’s shirt and opened his mouth to the kiss.

The sound of voices caught their attention and Logan pulled back and gazed down. Rogue was walking Gambit out to his car, her body language and tone of voice displaying her attraction to the man.

“I just don’t know about that Cajun,” Logan said.

“Me neither,” Kurt replied. “But he helped us find you and for that I’ll be forever indebted to him.”

“Hmm.” Logan continued to stare, watching like a hawk Gambit’s Roadster head down the drive and out the gate. Finally, he turned back to Kurt, dark eyes unreadable. “Yeah, I guess I’m in his debt too. Wonder what that’ll get us.”
