Kali cocked her head to one side and regarded the severed Shiva held in her hand. "He is much nicer alive, at least sometimes."
Kitty swallowed hard, studiously looking away from the trophy. "Aren't we going to be seen? Heard?" She squeezed Kurt's fingers between hers and tried to look relatively brave. The halls seemed strangely dark though the lights were on, their steps muffled and almost echoing despite the thick carpet beneath their feet. "Kali Ma?"
The goddess stopped and sighed, her arms dropping to her side. The two holding weapons folded in front of her belly in a show of patience, though the hands holding the bowl of blood and the head hung limply, obviously bored and agitated. "If you insist on stopping and asking questions every six feet, we will never get out of here. Now, do you want to babble and wax philosophic or do you want to move?"
Kitty's mouth worked silently, so startled was she. It was Kurt who answered. "Move," he replied firmly. "We want to move." He punctuated his words with a sharp nod, but his face quickly became troubled again. "Move where? Where do you want us to go?" As an afterthought, he blurted, "I'm Catholic, you know..."
"No one is perfect1," Kali purred, making Kitty choke on a sudden, unexpected laugh.
Kurt shifted uncomfortably. "But...move where? Are we leaving here? We should get the Professor..."
"That doesn't sound like your usual self," Kali chided. "So responsible all of a sudden..."
"How do you know what my usual self is?" he demanded, shifting forward to put Kitty behind him. "Who are you?"
"We know all sorts of things," Kali said darkly, turning away and raising her arms again. She began sway slowly, chanting under her breath, one foot poised an inch off the floor, the other planted firmly.
Kitty edged forward to stand closer to Kurt. "Kurt, just something I've figured out over the past year...things like this tend to end badly."
"Sometimes I wonder about you," he muttered, gripping her hand extra tight. "Hold on."
Kitty felt the familiar tug behind her navel radiating through her entire body and the split second of nauseating vertigo, then the world snapped back into place. Kurt exhaled noisily beside her and she sighed as her eyes focused and she found that they were in her room. "We need to let the Professor know..."
"If you two are quite finished," Kali's strident voice broke through the room, "we can get started!"
Kurt tried to teleport again but failed. It felt as if he were moving through glue, like his body was far too thick and heavy to function properly. Kali raised her arms and began to weave an intricate pattern in the air around her, her fingers trailing light and making a mandala about her as she bent and swayed. Never did both feet touch the ground at the same time.2 Kurt tried to find his voice and failed, so he did the only thing he could think of: He held fast to Kitty's hand, assuring that they would not be separated, no matter what was about to happen. "Liebes," he began, but the world heaved and shifted suddenly, plunging them into darkness ringed by a blue flame that seemed to shrink in on them before exploding into white light. When everything settled again, they were sprawled on the cold floor of a strange room. Kurt coughed, choking on air and spit before he managed to struggle up to his elbows as Kitty groaned beside him. Her fingers gripped his so tightly that he had lost feeling in his hand. "Was...was..." He coughed again, finally filling his lungs. "Fuck."
Kitty groaned again. "I think that sums it up." She rolled to her stomach, letting go of his hand as she pushed herself to her knees. "God, it stinks in here! It smells...rotten..."
Kurt rose to his feet with considerably more ease. "Can't blame my porting this time," he retorted. "This smells like...like..."
"Like Death," Kali sighed. She was stark black-blue against the white wall. "And if we're done analyzing the ambiance, get up. Move."
Kitty shoved herself to her feet almost automatically, steadying herself on Kurt's arm. "Where are we?"
"I took some of the steps from you," Kali sighed. "You were taking far too long." She crossed her arms in front of her, her hands now empty, giving rise to the question in Kitty's mind, where did Kali put them. In a sudden movement, Kali flung her arms wide and a panel of the wall slid open with a hiss. "Much easier than your superfluous buttons and lights and," she waved vaguely with the lower left hand, "things."
Kitty felt her eyes widen. "Things," she muttered. "Right." She pulled on Kurt's hand, not letting him move forward. "Where is this place?"
"Like I said," Kali sighed, "I cut out some steps for you. You were going to ruin this all if you dawdled any longer."
"Ruin WHAT?" Kurt was hesitant to approach the dark woman but found himself taking a step forward before he froze. "You're not telling us anything!"
Kali seemed to grow and expand even though she did not budge a fraction of an inch. Her aura filled the room, smothering Kitty into breathlessness and making Kurt fall back, eyes wide and hands shaking. "You will die one day, in the fullness of time, and be reborn into a new existence. I am the Dark Mother," she shifted from one foot to the other, "the Creator," then back to the first, "the Destroyer," and back to the other. "I am Shakti at the darkest, I am the only hope and the purest despair..."
Kitty knew what was coming and lunged forward, shaking her fear off as she dove. She was caught up in four superhumanly strong arms and lifted clear of the floor before she could stop Kali Ma. Behind her, Kurt moved belatedly, his own confused startlement dissolving into anger and panic. It was too late. Kali Ma set both feet firmly on the floor and for one moment, nothing happened. Then, a low rumbling began somewhere deep beneath them, building slowly. Kitty looked up at Kurt and tears stood in her eyes. "Oh, crap..."

1 I forget where this is from but the original comment was "But I'm not Jewish!" "Well, no one is perfect."
2 If ever both of Her feet touch the ground at the same time, the world ends. "Putting her foot down" brings ultimate destruction.
