Logan lounged in a chair, waiting for Jean to return from whatever it was she was doing, when there was a firm knock-knock on the door.
“Yeah”, he said loudly.
The door opened. Storm slammed the door behind her, making sure he understood she wasn’t out on a friendly mission. She meant to give him the third degree, or so he thought by the way she looked. He frowned at her but made no intention of getting out of the chair.
“You can give me some answers, Logan”, she said calmly, walking towards him, “no wait, let me rephrase that – you’re going to give me an explanation.” She stopped in front of the chair, arms crossed, and facing down at him.
“Now what did I do to earn this visit?” He met her gaze, not flinching. So she wanted to play tough, he could do that. Easily. Tough it was.
“You know damn well what I mean.”
“No I don’t, and please don’t be mysterious on my account. You come barging in here like you’re about to bust my ass so get to the fuckin’ point, Ro.”
“I just came from seeing Rogue”, she said still looking, no glaring, at him.
“So …?”
“Do you want to know what she said, or better yet, what she didn’t tell me?”
“Rogue? What about her?” Ororo wanted something from him, by the way she was literary piercing holes into his body, staring the way she did. He knew she wanted something, and badly.
Ororo made an exasperating sound in her throat. “Don’t play games with me, Logan. I saw you in the hallway earlier”, she said, raising one eyebrow at him. “Yeah, that’s right”, she continued when his face became close to blank, “I watched you talking to her.”
Logan got out of the chair, forcing himself past Ororo. She had no right to do this. “You were spying on us?” he said, sounding a lot more levelled that he felt.
She gave some kind of laugh. “No, merely observing. But that’s not the point, the point is that I’m asking you, and answer me truthfully, what the fuck did you say to her?”
He spun around to face her. “No … I … and it’s none of your damn business, so drop it, Ro”, he said, voice low and close to growling. She was pissing him off, but he wasn’t about to let her have the final word, or gesture – calling the Wolverine. No, he wouldn’t let her. He’d had enough of women pissing him off for the day. Including Scotty – a real mama’s boy.
“Well, actually no, it is my business, since I care about Rogue. I’m making it my business, Logan and –“
“Then let me tell you something”, he said softly, but warningly, and moved closer, not taking his eyes off of Ororo. “I care about her too.”
She smiled, but it wasn’t a pleasant smile. “Oh, really? Well, that has to be the understatement of the year.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“I saw you two talking, and I know it wasn’t a friendly chat, Logan.”
“Did she say something?”
“No, hardly anything, and that’s what worries me. She doesn’t open up to me anymore, not like she used to”, she said, sounding tired before giving him a stern look. “You’re going to spill the beans about it. What did you do to upset her so much she won’t talk anymore?”
He didn’t know how to respond to Ororo’s accusations, suddenly he felt drained, sort of weak, like he had no energy.
Ororo eyed him close, her facial expression changing from everything between worry, anger, suspicion and what he thought was pity. He didn’t want that, not pity, not from her. Not about this.
“So you did say something to upset her?” she said carefully.
He sighed. “No … look, if she’s … I should talk to her”, he said quietly, avoiding her gaze.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” Ororo touched him lightly on his right arm. He could smell her being worried, but still angry.
“Why not?”
“You tell me, I think you know, you know but you’re too stubborn to admit it, unless you’re in complete denial.”
“That’s not true, Ro”
“It isn’t? Stay away from her until she’s feeling better. I’ll let you know when that is.”
“You cannot make me, and who do you think you are anyway, dictating who I can and cannot see or talk to?”
“Try me, Logan, just try and you’ll see what happens. Stay the fuck away, because you know why? Underneath that frozen surface of hers, she’s still there, alive. And there is a reason why she reacts, like she’s hurting, whenever your name is mentioned”, Ororo said locking her eyes with his. “For there to be a situation like this in the first place, there’s more to it than I think you’ll ever admit.”
“What the hell are you implying? You’re not her mother, are you?” He snarled at her.
“Strong emotions, whatever the kind, tend to mean something, you know. You remember that if you still insist on talking to her again. It is my final warning to you, Logan. You mess her up one more time, you’d better be there to pick up the pieces for real, and pay the price for it.” She waited for him to reply, when he didn’t she grabbed his jaw, stared into his eyes, making sure he understood everything. “It’ll cost you, I can almost guarantee that. If you fail, you’ll pay a much heavier price than you could’ve ever imagined.”
