Ororo woke to a light tapping on her shoulder. As her eyes cleared, she saw Hank’s face smiling down into hers.
“Oh, Hank. Good morning,” Ororo said, raising her head and sitting up. Her eyes immediately fell to the woman in the bed beside her chair. “How is she?” she asked.
“Doing just fine. She woke up this morning at about 4 and then fell back to sleep at about half past 7,” Hank said smiling.
“What time is it now?”
“About 10am. I brought you some breakfast,” answered Hank, indicating the tray on the bedside table, laden with cereal, toast, two types of juice and a very generous pot of coffee.
“Thank you ever so much Hank, this is wonderful. Though coffee?” Ororo asked confused. In all the years Ororo had lived at the mansion she had never drank coffee because of the troubles African farmers face, though had never objected to others drinking it if it was fair trade produce.
“The coffee is not for you, Ororo. Have a little more faith in your friend,” Hank chided gently, taking the coffee pot from the tray and walking over to the desk. Ororo chuckled quietly and set about spreading her toast.
“Mmm… I better get something better than hospital food if she gets all that,” Lizi mumbled softly, turning toward Ororo, opening one eye and eyeing up the slice of toast, spread thickly with pate, she was holding. Ororo all but dropped the toast in surprise and turned to Lizi, smiling brightly. As both of Lizi’s eyes opened and focussed on Ororo’s, Ororo pulled the chair closer and sat down quietly.
“Good morning Lizi,” she said almost shyly.
“Good morning indeed,” Lizi said through half-closed eyes and turned her head further, wincing as she did so.
“Does it hurt that badly? Perhaps Hank could find some more pain control?” Ororo said, raising her head to Hank who nodded and set about finding another dose of morphine from the locked cabinet.
“Not too much anymore,” Lizi murmured quietly, gazing at the woman at her side who, without really noticing, had laid her fingertips over Lizi’s. Ororo watched Hank move about and smiled as she saw Lizi’s eyes roll back slightly and felt her fingers twitch under her own. Lizi let her head fall back to the centre and felt the rush of morphine flow over her and almost instantly forgot about the burning pain in her back and the throbbing of her head.
“Mmm… Now this is better than hospital food,” she murmured quietly. “Speaking of which, eat your breakfast,” she added, slurring her words slightly as the powerful drug took over. Ororo smiled and returned to her breakfast watching Lizi all the time.

Once Ororo had finished, she stood and looked over to Lizi and then, feeling compelled to do so, gently kissed her on the forehead. As she picked up the tray of breakfast things and walked out the infirmary to the kitchen, Lizi smiled in her sleep.

As Ororo entered the large kitchen and dining area, the X-Men who were eating their breakfast all stopped and looked up at her. Rogue stood and walked over to Ororo as she began placing the items on the tray in the dishwasher.
“How is she?” Rogue asked, simply.
“Better. She’s awake now. Well, she’s sleeping but it’s proper sleep if that makes any sense,” Ororo answered. Rogue nodded and Logan joined them.
“What’s the word?” Logan asked.
“There are a lot of serious wounds. Her wrist may be broken. She needs an x-ray but they don’t want to do one until she’s up and eating and she’s still requiring too much pain control at the moment. Her ankle doesn’t look broken. Jean suspects it’s a badly bruised bone.” Ororo paused and sighed.
“And her back?” Logan asked gently.
“Her back is quite bad,” Ororo said, raking her hands through her long white hair. “She has four very deep, very long cuts, three of which cross over at one point,” Ororo sighed again and smiled softly as she felt Remy’s hand gently on her shoulder.
“Relax a little,” he said quietly. “All sounds like cuts an’ bruises to Gambit. I t’ink this girl got more to her ‘dan meets the eye.”
Ororo nodded thoughtfully. “There is definitely something there,” she mused out loud. “I should return to her,” she stated. Glancing at the door.
“Why dontcha’ go an’ get all showered an’ stuff an’ we’ll keep her company for a little bit?” Rogue asked Ororo.
Ororo looked at the three smiling faces and consented and walked up to her loft apartment.

As Remy, Rogue and Logan entered the infirmary, Lizi was sitting up in bed, head back against the bed, sweating slightly with Hank leaning over her.
“Hi guys,” she said slightly breathlessly. “Damn. My back hurts like the mother!” she said, smiling at the trio as Remy sat down on one side and Rogue on the other. Logan hovered uncomfortably at the end of the bed. “Pull up a chair, hairy,” Lizi joked, smiling and thanking Hank with a nod as he walked away.
“I don’t like hospitals,” said Logan flatly. “So excuse me if I don’t make myself too comfortable.”
“Listen, I can’t lay down because of my severely shredded back so make yourself comfortable instead of me,” Lizi snapped. Logan glared at her and went to say something when Jean walked into the room and telekinetically brought a chair to Remy’s side. Logan huffed and sat down beside Remy and dumped a bag of grapes on Lizi’s lap, taking care not to hurt her, despite his non-caring demeanour.
“Grapes,” he said.
“Mmm… thanks!” Lizi exclaimed, bringing her right hand up to her lap, taking a grape and popping it in her mouth. “That arm hurt too sugah?” Rogue asked, seeing her stiffen with the movement.
“Everything hurts, Rogue,” Lizi said resignedly. A moment of comfortable silence passed between the group as they all felt Lizi become silently accepted into their midst.
“’Dat was amazing yesterday though. Gambit was impressed,” said Remy as he took his cigarette packet out of his pocket. Jean walked over, cleared her throat and very firmly put a vase of flowers on the table behind Remy. He took the hint and put his cigarettes back in his pocket, shrugging as Rogue shook her head at him in despair.
“Everyone pushes themselves a little too hard first time darlin’,” Logan said as Jean pulled up a chair and joined Rogue on Lizi’s right. “Kurt’s first time he teleported around too quickly and wore himself out and he fell from the top of the danger room to the floor and broke his tail.”
“Ah broke ma arm,” Rogue piped up.
“I broke the energy guns mounted on the walls,” said Hank from the desk.
“But surely that just shows strength?” Lizi countered. Jean laughed.
“Not when he trying to land on them to draw each other’s fire,” she said sniggering. Hank coughed loudly at this and Jean rolled her eyes. “What my colleague is trying to get at by coughing is that the first time I was in the danger room I caused a power-cut across all of Westchester.”
Lizi merely stared at Jean.
“Remy?” said Rogue, smirking.
“Yeah, Cajun. What happened when you were first in the danger room?” asked Logan, the hint of a smile lighting his face. Remy let out a loud sigh and rolled his eyes.
“Gambit charged d’ floor o’ de’ danger room and blew de under-floor wirin’,” he drawled.
“And also burnt his legs in the process,” came the amused African voice from the doorway. Rogue stood and smiled.
“Saved ya a seat,” Rogue said gesturing to the chair she had just vacated, beside Lizi’s right side. Logan stood and looked to Lizi.
“I’m going to go, getting a bit crowded anyway. I’ll come back and see how you are a bit later when it’s a bit quieter perhaps,” he said quietly. Everyone stood and stared at Logan’s quite uncharacteristic show of concern.
“That’d be nice. Thank you,” Lizi said smiling. Logan nodded and stood to move away. Lizi raised her hand towards Logan and he turned, seeing her outstretched hand looked at her questioningly.
“They were only grapes darlin’,” he said, looking uncomfortably at his feet.
“No, Logan, for yesterday. Thank you,” she said seriously, looking at him meaningfully. Logan shrugged and walked out, refusing to acknowledge the recognition from the small pink haired woman.

Lizi watched him go and cast her eyes towards Ororo who had taken Rogue’s place and had taken her good hand. Ororo looked back at her with a small smile, meant only for her and turned her eyes towards Remy and Rogue who were now sat side by side, gently jibing each other. Lizi relaxed back against the pillows as best she could and smiled happily.
‘Definitely make a good home this will,’ she thought to herself and shifted her hand to clasp Ororo’s.
