"Sean, I need for you to do something very important."
The Irishman raised an eyebrow. "Such as?" He had run into, almost literally, the Professor outside the downstairs study. The entire house was in a subtle kind of uproar now that Kitty had had, as Sam put it, a sinking spell.1 She had been taken to the infirmary against her protests, Kurt and Theresa in tow, and since then the rumors had been flying, most of which pertained to Kitty's sex life and the possible outcome of nocturnal activities.
"Warren and Betsy are on their way here now from the city. I need for you to go with them to Boston."
Sean felt his other brow shoot up to join the first. "Boston? What's in Boston?" A bell was ringing in the back of his mind, warning him of impending danger or sheer inconvenience. Even as the Professor said it, Sean knew.
"Emma. She has taken Jubilee to Boston...for some reason...and there are extenuating circumstances in their return."
"Such as?" Sean shifted his weight so that he was standing akimbo in front of the Professor, blocking his progress down the hall subconsciously. "I don't want to go into this blind. Tell me everything." He paused before adding, "You've been bad lately about hiding things from us and frankly, it's only made life here a version of Hell. Tell the truth as you know it so this won't be messier than it already is."
Professor Xavier did not even frown at Sean's blunt statement but rather opened a hand in a palm up gesture of acceptance. The white lines of tension around his mouth were still there but his eyes seemed to be less pain-filled than before. Considering the day had thus far been hectic to say the least and insane to put a finer point on it, that was nothing short of surprising. "There is not time to tell everything right now," he finally sighed, "but she and Jubilee are rather trapped. There seems to have been...a hostile takeover of sorts, of her former Hellion training grounds."
"A...what?" Sean rocked back on his heels and frowned. "How much danger on they in?" _And why do you need three of us to go in after them? _
"There are two of them and at least four against. It's not the fighting that worries me or necessitates the rescue mission. It's when they're not fighting that I worry." He nodded to Sean, who automatically moved in his distraction. "I must go see Kitty right now but please, when Warren gets here, go with them."
Sean sighed painfully. "You owe us answers!" he called after the departing man.
"And you shall be paid in full!" he returned without looking back. "As soon as you do as I ask."
Kitty stared straight ahead, feeling anxious to the point of shaking visibly, her mouth dry and throat burning. "Any minute," she murmured to Kurt. "I feel it...any minute..."
Kurt made a frustrated noise and crawled onto the bed behind her, kneeling and rubbing her tense, set shoulders distractedly. "Liebes, you need to let Beast give you the pills. You need to rest..."
She growled under her breath. "Why are you people so intent on making me sleep?" she snapped, turning her head to glare up at him. His wounded expression softened her slightly, her anger hissing from her in a sigh. "I'm sorry, sweetie... I can't explain it without sounding crazy but..." She glanced at the door to Beast's office where he huddled over some medical book or other, trying to find some rhyme and reason to Kitty's sudden illness. "Shiva spoke to me again today. At the church."
He tried very hard not to sigh. "I know. You told me earlier." He squeezed her shoulders and pulled her back against him, his fingers tangling abstractly in her hair. "Kitty, it's perfectly okay to talk to whatever form God takes for you and it's okay that He or She or even It talks back, but I really am worried that seeing Shiva again like this...I'm worried that it cannot be good."
She made a tiny whimpering sound low in her throat and her hand crept up to rest against Kurt's chest. "It has to be because if it isn't, that means I'm not right in the head, you know? He told me," she went on rapidly, her fingers tapping against him in agitation, "that someone is coming tonight, that she would help me...us..."
Kurt frowned even more deeply as he held her tight, feeling her shallow, ragged breathing and her shaking body as she tried to remain calm. "Kitty, you had a tremendous amount of stress today and it's perfectly understandable that you're having this sort of daydream to deal with it..."
"Kurt," she sighed, leaning back, "it's not a daydream." She cut herself off as the door swung open, admitting the Professor. "So you want to scan me?" she asked without preamble, dropping her hands back into her lap. "I'm okay with it if you want to..."
"Kitty," Professor Xavier smiled tightly, "I just wanted to see how you are doing." His glance flickered to Kurt and his smile grew even more strained. "How both of you are doing. Where did Theresa go?"
"She went upstairs to clean the kitchen," Beast announced as he lumbered into the room. "She said it was her turn anyway and hospital smells bother her," he shrugged. "Kitty, have you reconsidered taking the sleeping pill?"
"No," she replied stoutly. "I don't want it." Her statement was punctuated by a sudden flicker in the lights, a loud pop, then darkness. "Damn it..."
"Give it a second," Kurt murmured, "the emergencies will come on."
True to his word, the dark glow of the sodium lamps flickered on along the ceiling and floor. Professor Xavier and Beast looked strangely monstrous in the strange light as the shine slowly built, creating pockets of deep shadows in the room. Another flicker swept the room and then, the regular lights came back on, flooding them with blue white illumination. Before Kitty, a mere foot away, stood the most frightening thing Kurt had ever seen in his life. A naked woman, blue-black as midnight, holding gory trophies and bearing more arms than was possible on a human being, stood poised on one foot, her arms extended and face set. "Kitty?" she asked strangely.
Kitty sighed, seemingly oblivious to the others in the room now. "He could've warned me better..."
1 I don't know if that phrase is used outside of the South but it's like a faint but not quite. More than a swoon, less than a faint.
