Chapter 45

Thanks, Marie for your concern. My partner and I have been working on a huge project for our boss that requires a lot of traveling and overtime. I don't do overtime well. It gets in the way of my writing. But, we'll have it finished tomorrow morning (hope, hope) and things should get back to normal. Whatever that is.

I hope I didn't disappoint too many people by not having Logan kill Trask. It just didn't seem like the right thing to do. Logan is a better man than thaAhhhAhhh, what a hunk of animated man.

Chapter 45

Logan sat beside Kurt’s bed, gazing down on his lover’s quiet form. Every regret he’d ever had came back to haunt him, every chance he’d had to tell Kurt he loved him that he’d let pass by. Now, he only hoped it wasn’t too late...that this new and terrible ordeal had not snuffed out Kurt’s bright, beautiful spirit and love for life.

He watched the soft rise and fall of Kurt’s chest, watched Kurt’s face for any sign of waking or not being able to wake from a nightmare. The morphine dripped into the IV full of nutrients and antibiotics, soothing away pain and inducing a deep sleep.

Hank had found traces of drugs in Kurt’s blood, drugs used to keep Kurt disoriented and unable to defend himself...as if the collar might not be enough.

That’s right, Trask, you son-of-a-bitch. You underestimated him, didn’t you? Not even your torture and drugs could keep Kurt contained forever.

His thoughts raced back to Trask’s sneering insults and how much he had wanted to slit the man’s throat. But Jean was good....as good as Charles when it came to all the right words said in all the right ways. This was where he belonged anyway, beside his lover, watching over him, guarding him while he slept.

Gently, Logan stroked Kurt’s arm then twined his fingers with Kurt’s, holding on tightly.

If I could give you my strength, I’d do it, sweetheart. If I could give you my healing ability and never get it back, I’d give it to you with all my heart and soul.

“I love you, elf. I promise to tell you as soon as you wake up.”

Logan bent his head, weariness roaming his veins and arteries, saturating his flesh.

In spite of his weariness, a battle still waged inside of Logan. It took all his restraint to stay right here at Kurt’s bedside because his instincts and his desire demanded he hunt Sabertooth down. But this was where he belonged, beside his mate in his time of need. He didn’t want Kurt to wake and Logan not be there. He wanted his to be the first face Kurt saw, his hand the first hand to hold, his ears the first to hear Kurt’s words and he fulfill Kurt’s needs.

He had to let go of his desire...his blood lust, at least, for the moment.

Behind him, Logan heard the door open, expecting Hank, but the smell was distinctly female and distinctly Kitty.

He groaned inwardly. Logan was far from sure he was ready to deal with anyone or anything right now, but he wouldn’t send her away. She’d been there when Kurt needed his friends...his team mates and that gave her a right to be here as much as he.

She came to stand beside the bed, her gaze taking in the IV and the bandage at Kurt’s neck. She took in Kurt’s battered appearance and sniffed back tears. Kitty trailed a finger over Kurt’s arm then placed her hand on top of Logan’s.

“He will be all right, won’t he? The Professor says so.”

Logan cleared his throat. “If the Doc says so then I guess it’s true. I just don’t know when.”

Kitty turned, her gaze now all for him. She reached and fingered a tear in his shirt sleeve.

“If you want to go clean up...maybe take a shower and shave, I could stay with him.”

Logan felt a smile pull at his mouth in spite of his dismal mood.

“Is that because I’m stinkin’ up the place? Or you just bein’ nice?”

She grinned at him. “A little of both. I know when I saw you last and you look a lot worse for wear, Logan...and so do your clothes.”

“Yeah, well...maybe in a while. I’m not ready to be away from him.”

She touched a stiffened patch of dried blood on his shirt front, a disgusted expression crossing her pretty face.

“Who’s blood is this? Yours?”

“Some’s mine. Some’s Sabertooth’s. Not enough of it’s Sabertooth’s though.”

Kitty gave a nod and turned back to Kurt. “He looks so fragile,” she said, her hand going out again, lightly touching Kurt’s wrist. The fur had been rubbed raw like from their first captivity, the skin beneath torn from shackles and who knew what else. “He’s so still, like that time Rogue touched him when we first met her.”

“He’s not in a coma, half pint. He’s just in a drugged sleep. It’s the morphine.”

“I know. It just reminded me of then.” A silence followed and Logan sensed Kitty wanting to tell him something. “You know, that wasn’t Kurt’s fault. I messed things up.”

“What’s this? True confessions?” Logan asked.

“You blamed Kurt cause you thought he’d screwed it up with Rogue. But Kurt didn’t screw it up, I did. She was listening to him, had calmed down and I thought I’d grab her and prove I didn’t need looking after. I let Kurt take the blame for losing her when it was my fault and he never said a word. Just took the blame and let me off the hook.”

Logan said nothing for a while, mulling over an event long passed.

“You feel better now you’ve got that off your chest?” he finally asked.

“Yeah,” Kitty replied brightly. “I guess I do.” She pulled up a chair and sat.

Minutes passed without a word spoken then Logan said, “Ya know, he’s not.”

“Not what?” Kitty asked.

“Kurt’s not fragile. He’s a fighter. He’s strong in ways we’ll never understand cause he’s had to fight his whole life, fighting prejudices, fighting irrational fears. You and me, half pint...we can hide what we are if we want to, but Kurt can’t, not without that imagine inducer and then that’s just a disguise. What’s underneath is a whole lot more wonderful than anybody gives a chance.”

Kitty bowed her head. “Yeah, it took a while for me to give him a chance. When I first came here, he freaked me out big time. The way he looked mostly. And he kept trying to impress me, but all I did was act like every other human who didn’t give him a chance.”

“He had a crush on you when you first got here,” Logan said. “If you didn’t see that you were blind.”

Kitty blushed. “I know. I guess that’s why I freaked so much. Then when Rogue touched him and I was scared he’d never wake up, I started really looking at him and realized how cute he was in spite...or maybe because of his fur and his ears.”

“And his eyes,” Logan mused. “He’s got beautiful eyes.” Logan shook his head. Why the hell was he telling Kitty this stuff?

“Really gorgeous eyes,” Kitty agreed, not noticing Logan’s consternation.

Another silence drew out, no unease, just quiet time of contemplation.

“Are you guys, like...in loveittyitty asked, shattering the silence.

Logan said nothing for a moment. He stroked Kurt’s arm again, making sure his lover was real, that he wasn’t just imagining Kurt safe. “Yeah, I’m in love with Kurt. I love him...and he loves me.”

A smile spread across Kitty’s face “Aw. That’s so sweet.”

“What was done to him wasn’t so sweet though.”

Kitty’s smile dropped away and tears filled up in her eyes again. “Why did Sabertooth do that to Kurt? He’s never threatened any of us in that way before.”

“Me and Kurt weren’t together before...and Trask had a lot to do with it.”

“Why Trask? What did Trask make you do to Kurt?” Kitty met Logan’s gaze.

Logan shook his head. “I don’t wanna talk about it, half pint.” He looked away, his gaze latching onto Kurt again, his mind trying to block out those images, of the unbound lust, the need that drove him to rape Kurt.

“But you’d never hurt Kurt on purpose,” Kitty insisted.

“Not on purpose,” Logan replied. “But when you’re drugged, you don’t always know what you’re doin’. I did hurt him. And he forgave me.”

Kitty touched his arm, drawing his gaze back to her. “Kurt never blamed you for whatever happened. There was nothing for him to forgive. I think you’re the one who needs to forgive himself and you still haven’t, have you?”

Logan offered her a grim smile. “You’re a smart one, Kitty Pryde. Kurt told me the same thing and you’re right. I gue hav haven’t forgiven myself.”

“Then do it for Kurt, if you won’t do it for yourself.”
