Jubilee stood uneasily in the massive entryway. It made the foyer of the Institute look like a kitchen cupboard, she thought. It was freezing cold, a small puff of breath rising in front of her eyes as Emma disappeared down a side hall after ordering her to stay put. "Holy hell," Jubilee muttered. "This place is a crypt." She peered down the corridor Emma had vanished into and sighed. She was alone. The weight of the house seemed to press in against her as her feet started forward, a slow, trudging movement that seemed more like sleepwalking than simple movement. The house was so silent that she could hear her breath echo off the marbled walls and high ceiling. "What the hell kind of crazy money does she have?" she mused softly. A massive double staircase done in dark wood with an intricate inlay of a lighter wood rose imposing from the floor at the far end of the entryway, sweeping upwards for three stories as far as Jubilee could tell. Emma had not told her much about the purpose of the trip other than this was important, that this would help bring Remy and the others back. Hell, Jubilee thought, she had not even known anyone else was missing until Emma told her... "Emma?" she called quietly. Then, a little more loudly, "Emma? Where'd you go?"
"Most likely," a low voice intoned from the second floor landing, "to her private office."
Jubilee resisted the urge to scream in surprise as she craned her neck to look upwards. The man standing above her looked vaguely familiar but she could not quite get a name to go with the face. "Um, hello there... Can you maybe show me where her office is then?"
He smirked faintly as he began his descent. He was apparently Native American and looked as if he devoted most of his days to some form of heavy exercise, Jubilee thought, wrinkling her nose slightly in distaste. "It's her private office. If I were to show you were it was, it wouldn't be private anymore, would it?" He stopped just short of touching her, his smile becoming silky and cool as he looked down at her. "Don't be scared, Jubilation."
"I'm not scared," she murmured. "And how do you know my name?" She stepped back, despite her words, and added, "I thought this place was supposed to be empty anyway. Emma said it was." Her fingers curled of their own volition, the faint warming whirl of energy building in her hand, her powers subtly activating.
"Emma was mistaken," he shrugged. "I lived here for a very long time, too. She may own it, but it was my home."
"It's still breaking and entering," Jubilee retorted. "Trust me...I know that for a fact." She could feel the paffs of energy ready in her hand, coursing through her body. Now she just needed a reason.
He reached out and plucked her pink sunglasses from atop her head and smiled anew. "Pretty little Jubilee...so desperate to believe Remy is alive that she let Emma bring her out here. It didn't even cross your mind that it might be a trick, did it? Emma was Hellion for far longer than not. Or maybe," he paused, one brow creeping up, "she's really that blue woman, Mystique. Maybe it's all one big ruse to get you out here. Why else would she bring out all the way to Boston? What does she need here that she can not access in Bayville?" He folded her sunglasses closed and held them out to her.
Jubilee did not let her fear show. "I don't know what freaky crystal ball you've been using, jackass but you need to learn to mind your own business." One more step, she begged him silently. _Reach for me again... _
He laughed softly and leaned back, folding his arms over his chest. "It doesn't take some crystal ball, as you put it. Just intelligence." He reached out again, as if to touch her hair, and that's when Jubilee moved.
She brought up her hand as if scooping something from the air, opening her fingers to hit him full in the face with a spray of paffs, whirling away as she did so. She knew she had no time to debate things so she sprinted towards the front door-she did not want to try and find Emma in strange hallways, trapping herself to be picked off at the stranger's leisure. She heard him cry out hoarsely, temporarily blinded, as she reached the massive double doors. Yanking as hard as she could, Jubilee pulled one slowly open. Behind her, he was moving again, cursing and swearing fluently in several languages as the door opened just enough to let her slip through.
"Hi there," a female voice chirped.
Jubilee ran smack into a blonde, rather worse for wear woman only a little older than her. "Roulette," she groaned, knowing she was stuck. In a sudden move, she turned and landed a solid kick to the Native American's stomach before he could grab her again, but this left her open to being taken hold of by Roulette. She forced herself to go limp as she felt Roulette's grasp on her arms. Her dead weight was difficult to hold, forcing Roulette to shift her grasp in order to keep her from hitting the floor. Jubilee seized the opportunity and jerked free, looking frantically between her two assailants for a brief moment before bolting forward. She had no choice but to try and find another exit. "Emma!" she shouted. "Now would be a good time to get your ass in here!"
