Kitty felt very happy. She sighed and wriggled her toes against something soft and sighed again, content to drowse warmly.
"I take it you're comfortable?" Beast rumbled from near the end of the bed.
Kitty opened one eye and blushed furiously. Her toes were curled into the fur on Beast's forearm as he held her chart in his large hand. "Um...sorry!" she giggled nervously, uncurling her toes and tucking her foot behind her other calf. "I guess I was dreaming."
He was the picture of bland. "I would never have guessed. You've been asleep for about an hour... Rogue told me you fainted..."
She knew that tone of voice. The 'there's more to this than what you're letting me know' tone that Beast did oh-so-well. "I just sort of went out." She shrugged in what she hoped was a casual manner and worked her way into a sitting position. "It's like...like..." She made a fluttering motion with her hands and sighed. "This little girl, the blonde one..."
"Annie?" He nodded as if she had already agreed. "I met her in the preliminary interviews. Such a sweet little girl."
Kitty narrowed her eyes. "Right... She came up to me and when I put my hand on her shoulder it was like everything good in the world happening all at once..." She stopped herself before adding "It was better than sex!" and just spread her hands helplessly. "After that, I just sort of fainted."
Beast nodded and flipped through her chart once more, an item that was taking on the proportions of a small text book. "Your blood tests came out normal, your heart rate is normal... I can't see any reason on paper why you fainted like that." He shut the chart and smiled kindly. "Are you dieting again?"
"Well, yeah but..."
"Kitty, I've seen you diet. You don't eat properly. You're at an age and in a position where skipping so many meals and living on just one type of food is not even close to being an acceptable way of living."
Kitty recognized a lecture when she heard one starting. Beast was one of two adults at the Institute she was not still angry with and she hated to think that was about to change. With a smile and a sigh, she held up a staying hand. "Beast, look... I'm not skipping meals again and I'm not doing anything crazy. Kurt would, like, flip if I did that again! I'm being good and just watching the junk food and exercising and all that..." She was really trying to be good but it was very tempting to fall into her old habits, Kurt's close regard notwithstanding. It had been an act of sheer will to eat breakfast that morning after she found her uniform was a little too snug, in fact.
Beast nodded as if he did not believe her but said, "Okay, then I suggest you return to normal activity but take it easy. I'll tell Logan no Danger Room for you today and I'd like to give you the once over tomorrow morning..."
Kitty blinked, something Beast said triggering a memory. "Has Kurt been down yet?"
"Should he have?" he asked archly. He turned and tucked her chart back into it's appointed slot in the filing system, waiting for her reply.
She frowned. "There was something wrong in the Danger Room..." She relayed the short story efficiently. "I just thought maybe he'd come down here, get checked..."
"The thing about Kurt," Beast said with a smile, "is that he always does what he thinks is best, even if it is the worst thing for him. When you see him, send him this way." He tried not to let his concern show. The fact that there had been such a large malfunction and none of the warning alarms had gone off disturbed him almost as much as the fact Kurt had been involved somehow.
"Sure," she promised, sliding off the bed with quick smile. "I guess I'd better go catch up to the kids and relieve Rogue and Jean..." She only received a mutter in response as Beast went to enter her information into the computerized version of the file system. Unthinkingly, she phased into the hallway and set off towards the stairs. Instead of heading towards the appointed meeting place to find Jean, she took a detour towards Kurt's room. She knocked and waited, hearing no movement within. She was about to stick her head in when someone tapped her on the shoulder. "Kurt?" she asked, turning.
"No..." Amara raised a brow and smirked. "Sneaking off while Rogue is busy?" she asked with a pointed look at Kurt's door.
"No," Kitty snapped, drawing herself up straight. "I was just going to see if he's okay after a Danger Room accident... Aren't you supposed to be in town?"
Amara sighed. "Yes. But I tired of waiting for them to finish ogling those...picture book deals."
"Comics," Kitty corrected, one corner of her mouth turning up in amusement.
"Whatever," Amara shrugged. "I tired of them and left them there. Now I feel...guilty...and want to return for them. You're coming with me."
"I am? Thanks for telling me first." Kitty arched a brow. "Why am I going with you?"
"I don't feel like driving alone." In a slightly smaller voice, she added, "And Lance won't yell at me in front of you."
"He's afraid of you. He won't yell at you," Kitty sighed. "Lance is too in awe of you..."
Amara rolled her eyes. "You're coming with me."
"Fine, fine. Just a second..." She stuck her head in Kurt's room and frowned. He was no where to be seen. She phased the rest of the way in and went straight to his desk, scribbling a note on the corner of a piece of scratch paper telling him that Beast wanted to see him before heading back out to rejoin Amara in the hall. "Ready."
"You've misplaced him?" she asked dryly, heading down the hall with Kitty following.
"No...just...lost track." Kitty glanced back at the door one more time and had a niggling feeling something was not exactly right in the world...

A/N Lance and Todd in town, Scott and Jean and a bit of Remy and Jubes.
