"Well, Ah thought maybe you'd know."

"Why me?"

"Well ... on account of you bein' gay ... an' all. Ya know. Ah just thought you'd be the one to talk to."

"Ummm, alright. Then my answer is no. Anyways who told you I was gay?"

"Well, Ah mean - everybody knows, don't they?"

"Not that I know! Geez I hope it isn't THAT obvious."

"Oh."

"Why the down look?"

"Then maybe it was just me."

"'Just you' what?"

"Just me that knew."

"Nah. I'm sure you overheard it somewhere. It seems to be a big conspiracy nd here, ere, with me. Stop laughing! It's not funny."

"Ah'm sorry. It's just that Ah noticed the same thing about these people."

"What? You can't mean ... that they talk ... can you? Never that! God forbid we should keep secrets here at good ol' Xavier's Institue for HIGHER LEARNING."

"So why don't you think so?"

"What? Oh. Well. Your hair for one. No gay man wears his hair like that. Your clothes. You don't own anything except Nikes or Reeboks, and you only wear 'em with jeans or sweatpants."

"Ah have some nice clothes, too!"

"Oh - I forgot. What? A pair of Martens and a couple sets of khaki cargos do not a gay man make. If anything you are making my case. Only fratrats and posers wear those clothes if they're gay. ... ... I'm sorry, Sam. That wasn't how I meant it. Shit, now I feel bad."

"No, it's alright."

"Why do you wanna know about this anyway?"

"Curious, Ah guess. Down in Keny, \y, 'specially where Ah'm from, there ain't many gay people. Mah dad hated 'em, my mom, Ah think, is just too naive to understand 'em. So, you can see ..."

"Yeah, I can see. ... ... Well, I'm sorry I can't help ya out more, bud."

"That's ok."

"Course, I mean, if you really want to know that badly, I could just kiss you and we'd be done with it."

"Aw be quiet, Drake."

"Wha - nah I'm serious, Cannonballs! If ya REALLY wannna know ..."

"Shit. I dunno."

"Awww - come on! It'll be fun! You said you thought you might, be, right? Then what could it hurt?"

"Well, ME, for one."

"Why?"

"Because."

"Because isn't an answer, Sam, didn' yo mama nevah teach ya that, boy!? ... ... I'm sorry. Bad taste. My bad."

"Well Ah just don't think Ah'm ready ta know the TRUTH, yet, Bobby."

"Sam ... you seem pretty set on knowin' it already, if you ask me."

" ... ... Alright. ... Well? Don't look at me like that, you know what Ah mean. Do it."

"Just like that?"

"Ah said do it, didn' I?"

"Oooh, you are CUTE when you get impatient! Mmm! Ok. Then. Here goes."

... ... ... . . . ... ... . . . ... "Geez alright already; that's enough. Ah think Ah get the idea. 'Long with your dinner."

"Well I didn't see YOU moving to end it, Cornbread!"

"Don't call me that. Ah hate that. Sounds like somethin' not nice."

"Ya know Sam, considering you were in X-Force - ya got a little bit of a baby side to ya, huh? ... Ouch! I was just kiddin' ... geesh."

"You ever take anythin' seriously, Bobby?"

"Not unless I can help it. ... oooh ... that reeeally hurt, ya know."

"Sorry. Just mad."

"Cuz I called you a name!?"

"Nah. Somethin ... else."

"Oh. Oh. OHHHhhhhhh. Wh - wow. That."

"Yeah. Ah guess that means that Ah 'liked' it."

"I'd say."

"Stop it. You're makin' me blush ya know!"

*****

Dear Journal,

Well, another day gone by and Ah think Ah solved that problem Ah wrote 'bout. Din't tell mama, no - not yet. But Ah got some more insight into things. Ah went an' talked to Bobby Drake. The Iceman. Ah didn't tell him really the whole truth as to what made me want to ask him 'bout it. Not about Scott an' that. Ah thought, why should I? Ah don't need to tell anybody, not really. Ah mean, shoot - it don't matter none, not really. Does it? Why should Ah tell anyone - they got no reason to know it. He's the leader an' he can do what he wants. Ah guess. Anyways Ah'm not gonna. Not yet.

Anyways, Bobby wen' on n' on 'bout this n' that an' what makes a guy gay and what makes other gay guys know that he might be gay. Ah dunno. It jus' didn' seem ta make much sense to me, really. Ah mean - how can anyone KNOW about that? Shoot. Everythin' Bobby listed, or nearly everythin' he listed - not one of it fit me. Maybe where he's from it does ... not down in Kentucky. Least, not where Ah'm from. It's don't. Then again if all the gay boys down there 'r like me - well hell, Ah sure wouldn' know it. Maybe it's just different. But ya know what Ah really think? Ah think you can't tell - no way how. Ah seen on TV that they claim to be 'All one' - and they say too 'They're everyhwere' ... Ah guess Ah sould say now 'We're everywhere.' Seems pretty true to me. Ah mean - Ah guess ... Ah am, so, we must be everywhere. All kindsa people 'n all kindsa places. One thing my daddy was right about: 'It takes all kinds.' Surely does. It surely does.

Well, oh - Ah forgot! Bobby wanted me to kiss 'im! Ain't that funny!? It makes me laugh jus' thinkin' 'bout it. Ah guess it was nice. Ah think he knew what he was doin' though! Ah mean, the way he just moved right in - it was like Ah hardly knew it at all. That he was kissin' me Ah mean. Ah guess that looks bad ... haha. No not that - gee - Ah'm still gettin' used t'it ... gimmme a break, huh?

It was nice, tho. Ah finally ended it - but ... damn - Ah kinda wanted it t' go on longer, ya know? Ah mean, well shit, Bobby IS pretty cute, Ah guess. (It feels really weird sayin' that ... writin' it here. Nice, Ah guess.) He said he didn' know that anyone knew he was gay but that's gotta be a lie - cuz Ah KNEW Ah heard someone say somethin' 'bout it - long time back. Probly Tabby.

Damn. There's a problem. Ah mean - yeah Ah guess now that Ah think on it Ah never REALLY liked her ... but Ah sure thought Ah did! What about all those times we'd go out for a nice dinner somewhere - what about all the times ... Yeah an' if she were here Ah know what She'd be sayin' ta me if Ah was actin' this way! She'd say: 'Guthrie get your head out of your ass and open your eyes. We never fucked because you couldn't get it up for me!'

...

Sorry. Ah'm back. Ah got to thinkin' about what Ah wrote - and if that was true, Ah thought Ah'd try somethin'. Got out that naked pic of her that Ah've had since we broke up. Ah kept it jus' for memories, and uh - well ya know. So Ah thought Ah'd try somethin'. Ah held her in one hand ... and Ah looked though my stuff and found a pic of Drake - not naked, 'course - just standin' with a big fish over his head - showin' off mor'n likely. All his clothes on - 'cept he's wet from the river he musta been in, and all them clothes stick ta him like nothin' at all. Yeah ... you can see pretty much anythin' ya want if ya look close enough.

Well. Can ya guess which one it was that got me?

Lemme just say that by the time Ah was through, Tabby was lost somewhere on the floor, Bobby's picture was a good deal more bent than it had been ... and now AH'M gonna stop writin' cause Ah gotta do me some laundry.

Nobody needs ta know. Ah figured it out afterwards. Ah'l just keep it to myself. Be normal. It ain't like Ah'm less of a man for it! Jus' happen ta like ... well - Ah guess some things will take adjustin'. Guys. There. Better. Better n' girls. Said it all, now. No secrets.
