Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Logan decided to go back to work the same year Erik turned thirteen. He had worked many years as a mercenary, but he knew that had to come to an end. He had Erik now, and Erik mustn’t know that he made war for a living. The kid hated all kinds of violence and war, and that made him wise.

Many regarded Logan as the perfect soldier – quick healer, persistent, strong, fast, aggressive and fearless.

But his days as a warrior were over. No more bloodshed or fighting. He would get himself a real job to support himself and Erik. He needed a job so he could send Erik to school.

It wasn’t difficult for Logan to find a job; he started working at a steelworks down in Bailey Falls, and soon impressed his employers with his great stamina and endurance.

Of course, this meant big changes for Erik. He had gotten used to having Logan at home at daytimes, not to see him leave by 7:00 AM and return home by 5:00 PM. That settled it. Erik had to go to school. It wasn’t healthy for a twelve-year-old kid to be home alone at daytimes, without seeing others his age.

One evening after a long workday, Logan told Erik that he wanted to have a serious talk with him, and Erik came immediately, snuggling in beside Logan in the sofa, with an apprehensive look in his large blue eyes.

“Have I done something bad?” he asked worriedly.

Logan smiled. “No, angel, you haven’t. You shan’t worry about that. This is about something else that’s important.”

“What?” Erik asked curiously.

“You know, with me working late at night, and stuff,” Logan began, “you do feel lonely here sometimes, don’t you?”

“Well… I’ll cope,” Erik said.

“No, coping is not enough. That’s why I’ve decided to put you in school, so you can see others your age. Would you like that, Erik?”

“School?” Erik asked. “Here in Bailey Falls?”

“Yeah. I know you like reading and stuff, so I think it’d be great for you to study and interact with other kids. Hey, I know you like me, but you really need to see more kids.”

Erik wasn’t sure what he thought about going to school here in Canada. He was kind of shy, and didn’t feel like seeing others his age. He was eager to learn stuff though, but preferred to do it from his books at home. But he wouldn’t contradict Logan. He knew that Logan worked hard for his sake, and he had to thank Logan by being docile and not making any trouble. Besides, he maybe shouldn’t judge the school yet. He had, after all, not even been there yet. Erik was keen on trying new things, and he had liked going to school in Germany before the war.

“When can I start?” he asked.

“Well, there’s only a month until the spring break begins,” Logan said. “I don’t know if it’s any use starting before that. But you can, of course, if you want to.”

“Would *you* like me to, Logan?”

“Sure. It wbe abe a nice change. I can have you registered at the Bailey Falls school, and you can start next week. Will that suit you, Erik?”

“Quite so,” Erik said, trying to look forward to the new experience.
