“Please stop staring at me.” Kitty felt something between sickened and awkward as Magneto laughed under his breath at her request.
“You look just like your grandmother did at your age…” He leaned back against the wall, aware that he was being watched by eyes seen and unseen. “Right down to the freckles.”
Kitty cringed inwardly. It made her feel disgusting to think that Magneto was comparing her to a former lover, even if it was her own grandmother. She wished she had worn more layers, or sent word that she would not do this for them, even if the Professor did request it. “Please stop staring at me,” she repeated more fiercely, flipping a series of switches and inhaling sharply as the Danger Room below her powered down. The control room remained brightly lit, casting odd shadows down into the open pit of the space below. Kitty did not move for a long moment, counting silently under her breath. “This may work,” she said as an aside to Storm. “If not, I’ll try something else.” With a silent prayer, she pressed the yellow button near her right hand and barely managed to hide a breath of relief as the Danger Room came back online.
“Is it finished?” Magneto asked with a hint of boredom. “This has taken far longer than I expected.”
Storm tensed beside Kitty but the Professor did not respond. If Kitty had not known better, she would have sworn the man was asleep in his wheelchair. Gritting her teeth, she replied “It’ll take however long it takes. Now leave me alone.”
“Be patient,” Storm amended Kitty’s harsh tone. “This is a complex thing, the Danger Room. It’s not a matter of simply rebooting it…” She paused and leaned close to Kitty. “Is it?” she whispered.
“No,” came the cold reply. “It’s not. It takes a long time when I’m wide awake and well rested. Given that I’m pretty tired right now and I’d like to be anywhere else, like at a neo-Nazi rally while carrying a menorah and singing the Dreidel song, this is going to take a while.” She could feel rather than see Magneto’s demeanor change and she knew she had touched on a sore spot, to put it mildly. She did not apologize, though, because she did not want him to think she cared about his feelings. Instead, she focused on the controls in front of her, humming softly under her breath as she went through screen after screen of diagnostics. “What on Earth did you guys do to this thing?”
Logan’s voice came from the doorway behind the Professor. “We got a guest,” he said bluntly, making Kitty jump at his tone.
Kitty turned to face her foster father as he crossed the short distance from the door to Magneto, getting so close to the older man that they were practically touching chest to chest. “Yes?” Magneto encouraged, one eyebrow raised. “May I help you?”
“Who’d you bring with you?”
“I’m afraid I have no idea what you mean.” Magneto reached up and pushed Logan away gently, one finger against the shorter man’s shoulder.
Logan took a step back automatically but did not stop his questioning. “Don’t be a dumbass, Magneto. We know Pietro and Tarot ran away from you… you probably sent that Incubus freak after them. He’s the perfect spy, isn’t he?” Logan demanded, lunging forward suddenly, pinning Magneto against the wall. Kitty’ shrieked, short and sharp, in surprise, but he did not relent. “Invisible, virtually undetectable… it’s like having a little part of you on their tail, ain’t it?”
Magneto’s eyes narrowed and Logan flew back, taking out a bank of electronics. Kitty’s shriek came again, this time louder and longer, but no one seemed to pay her mind as Magneto lifted Logan with a twist of his fingers, manipulating the magnetic field around the metal-boned man to send him twisting into the air. “Where is my son?”
Professor Xavier responded calmly, not looking at the mess that had been made of the very expensive and very hard to repair control room lest he snap. “Pietro and Tarot have Lucas and are with Beast. Put Logan down, Eric, and you have my word he will not retaliate.”
“I could not possibly care less about his retaliatory fantasies, Charles.” Logan fell with a heavy, teeth rattling thud, making Storm and Kitty both wince before they moved as one, dropping to their knees beside him even though they knew that he was unharmed. “Why are you hiding them from me?”
“They aren’t hiding,” Professor Xavier said calmly. “They are receiving medical care.”
Magneto’s face took on an expression akin to relief but closer to annoyance. “Take me to them.”
Kitty stood, shaking slightly. She knew she would likely be safe here, but facing Magneto made her stomach roil with nervousness. “Get out. Get out, get out, get out!” she said through clenched teeth. “I don’t want to help you and now I can’t… the Danger Room is useless until we get that,” she gestured to the crushed equipment, “fixed and I hope Pietro and Tarot never even look twice at you again!” She heard herself talking but could not believe the words. “Get. OUT!”
Logan rose, his arm going around Kitty’s shoulders and pulling her back against his side. “Half Pint, I think you need to go back to bed.”
“I’m not four, Logan!” she snapped, glaring at Magneto. “I’m not a kid! You can’t send me to bed!”
“Yes, I can,” he replied firmly. “Go to bed. Go get some water or something and calm down, then go to your room.”
Kitty’s mouth opened and closed several times as she tried to process what was happening. “You’re kidding me… I’m being sent to my room like I’m six or something? Just because I told off Magneto?”
“He is an invited guest in our home,” Professor Xavier said calmly. “He will be treated as such unless I rescind the invitation.”
Kitty was experiencing a rare moment. She was at an absolute loss for words. Soundlessly, she phased through Logan, then the Professor, then out the door, somewhat missing the satisfaction of being able to slam it in her wake. She hated phasing through people but she did not want to even pretend to be polite in that moment. Resolidifying, she strode down the hall towards the bank of elevators. _That’s it. I’m done, _ she thought angrily. _I don’t need this anymore. _
