Kurt leaned as casually as possible on the hood of the
car, doing his best not to appear jealous but rather conversationally
cool. "Ja, boyfriend. Some time now," he added, his smile not
reaching his eyes.

"Well…" Pete looked past him towards the mansion and
frowned. "Good for you then. I just want to see Kitty, give her the
books and see if she's coming back tonight for study group and for the
test tomorrow." He looked at where Kurt's backside rested against the
hood of his car. "Mind not doing that? You're going to ruin the
finish."

Kurt shifted slowly, in part to make sure his tail was
still hidden and in part just to torment the other young man. "I'll
take her the books," he announced, holding out his hands. "She's busy
right now. I'll tell her you stopped by, Sam."

"Pete."

"Whatever." He reached for the stack of textbooks only to
grab empty air. "Or you can just hold on to them until you see her at
school," Kurt said with an arched brow. "Whatever."

"I think I'll just go see her now," Pete smiled tensely.
He had heard Kitty mention her friends at the boarding school, as well
as her foster father, but he could not recall if she had ever
mentioned this one. He moved back around to the driver's side door of
the car and slid behind the wheel. "If you don't mind," he said to
Kurt, nodding in the direction of the house. "Hate to make you into a
new speedbump."

Kurt tensed visibly for a moment, then relaxed, smiling.
"Go ahead." He stepped back, even with one of the large oaks lining
the drive, and waited until Pete had passed by before teleporting to
the front landing. Kurt barely suppressed a laugh at the look on
Kitty's friend's face as he drew to a stop in front of the house.
With a cheery backwards wave, he let himself into the house and shut
the door firmly behind him. " Katzchen!" he called. "Liebes!"

Kitty stuck her head into the front hall from the rec
room. "Kurt!" she smiled widely. "Guess who made it back?"

He shook his head, pacing across the floor towards her as
Pete knocked on the front door. "Your friend from school is here," he
said in a decidedly stiff tone. "Peter Wisdom." He laid his hands on
her arms and felt her tense as well. "How did he know where to find
you?"

Kitty opened her mouth to reply, then paused, raising a
brow. "Why?"

"Was?"

"Why do you ask? Aren't I allowed to have friends over,
Kurt?" She slipped from his grasp and moved to answer the front door,
shooting one last, confused look over her shoulder at him before
greeting Pete. "Hey," she said, her tone wary but pleased beneath it
all. "You didn't drive all this way just to give me my books, did
you?" she laughed, her eyes lighting immediately on the stack in
Pete's hands. "You're insane."

"Well," he said, smiling down on her, "it's a big test…"
He shrugged, glancing past her at Kurt, a troubled look flickering
across his features. "Um, you left so fast that you missed the study
group and I know you were worried and… Dude, you gotta keep staring at
me like that?"

Kurt jerked up straight, clearing his throat as Kitty
shifted to follow Pete's glare. "Sorry. I thought you looked familiar
and I've been trying to figure it out." He saw Kitty's disapproving
look but he could not help it. He was jealous, he felt petty and he
wanted to drive this person away and wished he could take off the holo
and scare the Hell out of him. "He reminds me of someone I knew in
the circus."

"Oh?" Pete raised a brow. "Who's that? Let me guess…the
clown, the horse's ass, the bearded lady?" His tone was, even to
Kitty's ears, harsh and crude.

Kurt did a good job of looking taken aback and insulted.
"Nein. You reminded me of my Uncle Heinrich's friend Matthias." He
sniffed imperiously, letting his words drip with disdain at Peter's
attitude. "He was a very kind man. He would have done something like
this," he added, gesturing to the stack of books." _Damn it… I was
going to say jackass… _

Kitty looked between the two males and sighed deeply. "It
was sweet of you to come out, Pete, and I'm sorry it was for so short
a time but I'm on my way out. I have to run some errands with my
friend Amara then catch the train back to school." She held up a
hand, cutting off Pete's offer to wait around and drive her back.
"I'll see you at the study group tonight."

Kurt held his tongue until Pete made his goodbyes and the
door was shut behind him. "I hate him," he muttered. "He's a
sleaze."

"Kurt," Kitty replied patiently, feeling a twinge of
pleasure at this display of jealousy, "he's my friend. We're in the
same classes, the same program… He's just worried I'm going to fall
behind if I don't have my books with me. And it's not like it's that
hard to find where I live, you know," she added, heading for the rec
room. "It's all over my student information."

He did not reply, following her at a safe distance.
"Where are you heading off to?" he asked, almost demanded, as she
tossed the books onto the sofa and grabbed up her light jacket. "Need
me to come and help with the errands?"

She paused, then sighed, smiling sadly. "Kurt, I
understand. I do. But… no. Not now. It's too new. We need to let
this heal before we try again, okay?" She zipped up her jacket, not
looking up at him, feeling his intent gaze on her. "Can you do me one
favor, though?"

He nodded. "Ja…anything. What is it?" He took two steps
towards her, curling his fingers into fists so that he would not reach
for her.

"If Amara and I aren't back by nine, come find us."
