Chapter 35
I'm so tired I can't even think of anything to say. More tomorrow when I've recovered from a very long week of overtime. Enjoy. And thanks for the new review. Always appreciated. Encouraging the writer is a good thing.
Chapter 35
“I know you’re disappointed, Mama,” Kurt said into the telephone. “But I really want to spend Christmas here this year. Please don’t be upset.” He paced to the fireplace where Logan was stoking a fire and tapped him on the shoulder.
Logan glanced up and Kurt held out the telephone so Logan could hear his mother speaking her mind although Kurt doubted Logan understood German well enough to appreciate the subtle nuances of his mother’s anger.
Kurt mouthed “my mother” and put the phone back to his ear.
Logan lifted an eyebrow, put his hands out to indicate this was way out of his jurisdiction and went back to his fire duties.
Kurt bared his teeth and leaned against the wall.
“Mama. Please don’t be angry. I know. I know. It’s just I’ve made plans...with...some friends.” He hated telling even a small lie, but couldn’t think of another way to get her to comply. Catching Logan’s attention again, Kurt gave a thumbs up and grinned. “Thank you, Mama. I promise to make it up to you. Yes, maybe Spring break. I’ll be mailing your Christmas presents in a few days. I love you too. Give my love to Papa. Bye.”
Kurt hit the off button and smiled with satisfaction.
The television droned in the background with the boys watching some martial arts movie. Kitty and Amara were playing video games in another corner. Rogue was sitting at a table with her headphones on, painting her fingernails deep purple. It looked like everyone had pretty much finished homework for the evening.
“So, what’s that mean for Christmas, elf?” Logan asked, shoving up to a stand. “Your mom give in?”
“Indeed she did. So, that means we can spend Christmas together.”
“Great,” Logan said not sounding all that enthused.
“Don’t act like it’s so painful. You’ll see.” Kurt stepped forward, just close enough that his words would be private. “It doesn’t hurt to have someone to spend Christmas with. And my promise is that it will be a very special Christmas. I think you’ll like my present to you, but you’ll have to unwrap me..I mean it...in private.” He waggled his eyebrows and offered up a sly smile.
Logan groaned and with a hand under Kurt’s elbow, propelled them towards the door. “It just takes some gettin’ used to, that’s all.” They made it around the corner andn thn the hall before Logan stopped him and stole a kiss, pulling Kurt close into his arms. “And if you keep talkin’ like that in public, I won’t be responsible for what happens in public.”
“Oooh, promises, promises.”
“You are such a brat, sometimes.” Logan put an arm around Kurt’s waist and they resumed walking. “We need to find some place to talk.”
“Talk? Oh no. What have I done now?”
“Nothin’.” They headed upstairs and into Kurt’s room. “We just need to talk about your parents. We’ve avoided this as long as we can.”
Kurt fell onto his bed, pulling Logan down with him. “I see. You thought I’d tell them about us when I went to visit, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, I figured you would. So when are you gonna tell them?”
Kurt pushed up to sit against the headboard. He stared off, trying to imagine that scenario.
“Elf?”
Kurt shook his head. “I don’t know, but not now. It’s...not a good time.”
“Then when?” Logan asked, his voice neutral.
“In June when I’ve graduated from high school. I’m afraid....”
“You’re afraid they’ll want you to come home to get you away from me.”
“Yes,” Kurt said with a sigh. “I think they would want me to go back to Germany. They will have problems.”
“Because of my age or my gender?”
Kurt finally met Logan’s dark gaze. “Maybe both, but definitely that you are a man. You need to understand, Logan. My parents are staunch Catholics. Homosexuality is not accepted in the Church. It is considered a sin.”
“So why don’t you have problems with it?” Logan asked, lying flat on his back and staring up at the ceiling, hands cradling his head. “You were raised Catholic and I know you believe in God.”
“Sometimes I do have problems, but then I think that something that seems so right can’t be evil. Something...what I feel for you, is not a bad thing. God made us all, no matter what we are. My parents taught me that and it helped me deal with people calling me a demon and saying I am from hell. So why would that same philosophy not apply to those who love someone of the same sex?” Kurt put a hand to his mouth. “Sorry, I used the “L” word.”
Logan reached over and slapped Kurt lightly on the leg. “Be serious. So how do you still believe in the Church if you disagree with the doctrine?”
“Hmmm.” Kurt thought for a moment.. “The Church is old, Logan. It needs to drag itself into the twenty first century and it is kicking and screaming all the way. If we followed everything that the Bible says then slavery would be condone. Or should we still be stoning people for wearing the wrong fabrics next to each other...or because your neighbor plants the wrong crops side by side? There is so much that is archaic, that is not relevant to the world today and this attitude towards same sex love is one of them. I believe in God, Logan. I believe he loves us all, even someone like you who does not believe. But I also believe the Church is badly in need of fixing in certain places. The Church is not the same as God.”
Logan was quiet, still staring up at the ceiling.
“Did I answer you questions?” Kurt asked, wondering at Logan’s sudden interest in his religion.
“More than answered. You can be pretty long winded when you wanna be, elf.”
“Is that a compliment or an insult? Sometimes I can’t tell the difference with you.”
Logan rolled over and pulled Kurt down to lie next to him. “Sometimes I don’t know myself.”
Kurt snuggled into Logan’s embrace, resting his head on his lover’s shoulder.
“So you’re not gonna tell your parents about us right now. Then when you graduate from high school, what happenen? en? You tell them and then what? We need to be thinkin’ what’s gonna happen. I know you intend to go to college here. Will they cut off your funding if you stay once they find out about me?”
Kurt turned his face up to Logan’s “You are asking some very hard questions tonight, Logan. You are making my head hurt.”
“I just wanna know how we’re gonna keep you in the States. You’ve gotta be goin’ to college to stay here legally.”
“I know. I’ve already been acce to to three universities. I think I will have a scholarship to one of them. I don’t know how my parents will react. I just want to get beyond the parental control issue.”
“You’re eighteen now.”
“But....”
“Yeah, they’re still your parents and you’re not out of high school yet. I’m not sure how Charles would handle that.”
Kurt pushed n onn one elbow. “But I am legally an adult. I can decide for myself if I want to stay or go.”
Logan shook his head. “Now my head’s startin’ to hurt, kid.”
“I didn’t ask them if I should help fight Apocalypse. Do you think my parents would have agreed to that? So why should they have a say in I h I have a relationship with?”
Logan let out a sigh and pulled Kurt down again to lie against his shoulder. “Settle down. One step at a time. Okay, we wait till graduation to tell your parents and we’ll deal with the fallout then. But you’d better make sure the Doc understands the situation.”
Kurt turned his face to look up at Logan “Do you think I am a coward?”
Logan rolled Kurt onto the bed and leaned over him. Gentle fingers brushed hair from his face, stroking his jaw line and cheek. It still amazed him how gentle Logan could be when he wanted.
“You’re anything but, elf. Hell, even I’d be leery of tellin’ my parents I was datin’ someone who fought in World War II and, oh by the way, he’s a guy.”
Kurt chuckled.
“I wish this was as funny as sou sounded, but it isn’t,” Logan stated.
“I know,” Kurt replied contritely. “I just wish you’d lighten up a little.”
“I’ll lighten you up,” Logan growled and bent to kiss Kurt’s lips.
Kurt wound fingers into Log hai hair, the other hand running down Logan’s back and up under his shirt to caress bare flesh. Logan groaned into Kurt’s mouth.
“We shouldn’t be doin’ this on a school night,” Logan said, breaking the kiss and trying to pull back.
Kurt hung on. “Just one more kiss...please.”
Logan grinned down at him. “Well, if you’re gonna beg for it.”
Logan bent down to Kurt again, lips crushing his, tongue sliding between his lips to graze his own.
A knock on the door startled them and Logan gave a sigh, pushing up to lean on his elbow.
“Yes? Who is it?” Kurt asked with disappointment.
“It’s Kitty,” she yelled through the door. “Would you have time to help me go over my Chemistry notes one more time for a test tomo?”
?”
Kurt licked his lips, tasting Logan there. “Of course. Just a moment.” He gave a shrug and Logan rolled off the bed and headed for the door. Kurt straightened his clothes and sat up.
“Oh!” Kitty exclaimed when Logan opened the door. “Hi Logan. I didn’t realize...I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything.”
Logan flung a glance over his shoulder to Kurt. “Nothin’ we can’t pick up on later. Night, elf. Night, half pint.”
“Goodnight, Logan,” Kurt replied, wishing they didn’t have to say goodnight at all.
