Kurt very nearly hopped out of the car before it stopped moving; Sam had to slam on the brakes to prevent it from happening, in fact, earning several rude gestures and one long, abrasive honk from a Ford Fiesta. Kurt paid it no mind, making a beeline for Kitty where she sat on the curb next to Paige. "Katchzen," he breathed, dropping to crouch before her. "Are you okay?"
Paige answered for her. "She's...there." She shrugged, looking terribly ragged herself. "They're not telling us anything... They won't even let us near the car." She sniffed, a small streak of tears cutting through a dine dusting of dirt on her face. "And she hasn't talked since she tried calling the house."
Kitty blinked and seemed to be just waking from a deep sleep for all the recognition she gave Kurt. "He's fine, you know." Her face creased into an awkward smile. "He's got wonderful luck."
Kurt bit his lip, his fangs piercing skin. "Ja, Liebes. I know. Come on. Let's get you two up and back to the house." The Professor had found the girls easily using Cerebro when Kitty did not answer her cell phone. Sending Kurt and Sam had been not so much a decision as a given, the two bolt out the front door and to the car before anyone else could offer. He held out his hand to help her to her feet, sighing as her cold fingers closed over his. "Did they ask you questions, Schatz?"
Again, Paige answered. "Just a few. They said..." her eyes were wide and disbelieving, "it's a gas leak. But wouldn't it have been more...worse?"
Sam, opening the rear passenger side door, laid a hand on his sister's arm. "You okay?" He glanced over her head at something behind her. "Weird."
"Me?" she asked strangely, wondering at his sense of humor in that moment. "I'm not good."
"Kurt, can you hang here a second? I wanna go check something." Sam narrowed his eyes as he glared at the storefront behind his sister.
Kurt frowned. Kitty was most pliable, letting him help her into the car as she stared fixedly at the crew swarming over the remains of the church. Paige was less compliant, standing in the open doorway for the car, staring hard at her brother. More than a little harried, Kurt demanded, "Is this really the time, Sam? I know you weren't great friends with Remy but come on!"
"It's not something stupid," he hissed, insulted. "Just wait a sec!" Without further words, he slipped around Paige and headed towards the open door of the stationary store.
Kurt growled in frustration. "Kitty, wait here, okay?" He waited for her nod of assent and followed Sam towards the store.
Paige bent low and peered into the car. "Well, Velma1, you coming or what?" She did not want to go on some half assed wild goose chase but saw the opportunity for what it was-a blessed distraction. The idea of Remy actually being dead was something she felt better not addressing, as if by ignoring it, it was not true, despite seeing the accident and being ten feet from it currently.
Kitty looked up at her slowly. "I'm going to wait here, I think. If you don't mind." She glanced away, back towards the rubble. "I don't feel so good."
Paige sighed. "I'm gonna go get the Wonder Twins2 and I'll be right back." She looked at Kitty for one long moment, letting her gaze slide past her friend to the architectural carnage beyond. "Right back."
Kitty nodded, not looking at Paige. She counted to fifty silently before craning her neck to see where they had gone. They were nowhere in sight, for which she was glad, though she sorely wanted Kurt at her side for this. She just could not puzzle a way to get him away from the Guthries without them coming along for the proverbial ride. "I won't be long anyway," she muttered. She phased through the car door, checking both ways up and down the street to find herself thankfully unnoticed. _Don't see me, _ she begged through whatever deity deigned to listen, jogging across the street towards the destroyed church. People were so busy filling out forms, sorting through rubble and in many cases, talking to bright cameras and shiny news people, that no one noticed the short, quiet girl darting around clumps of people and heading for the rubble itself. She would have to move fast, she knew, to keep from being see and probably arrested if not sent home in a patrol car for her trouble. Virtually non of the church was left standing, save for the front doorframe and pieces of pillars where the altar used to stand at the end of the nave.3 The basement gaped open in most places, a yawning, burned pit littered with hymnals and pieces of rubble and pews. A concrete saint stared balefully up at her from a pile of red glass, all that remained of a novena4 to Saint Joseph, protector of families and home. Kitty glanced back over her shoulder one more time and felt her stomach tremble in anticipation. Shifting into phase, she darted forward and let herself fall into the pit of a basement, her immaterial state allowing her to impact less jarringly than she might have otherwise. No one had seen her so far and she knew that was pure, dumb luck. Kitty was not sure what she was looking for but knew that it was here, knew that something was strange about the explosion and knew, deep in her heart of hearts, that Remy was not dead. She took a deep breath, fading back into a spot of shadows, and closed her eyes. _If You're listening, I know I don't do this often...show me what to do... _
"I was wondering when you'd call me again."
Kitty opened her eyes and bit back a groan. "You!"

1 Shameless Scooby reference. Velma was the smart one.
2 Old cartoon. "SHAZAM!" Come on...you know which one I mean!
3 In Catholic churches, aisles are technically the rows down the sides and the nave goes up the middle to the altar. Viva la CCD, lol.
4 Novena...nine prayers a day for nine days for a specific intent or for intervention from a specific saint or saints. The candles in Churches are more of a focal tool and remnants of fire offerings back in the day. You light one each day or even light one for a special intent that isn't a novena.
