The Spark
Chapter 3 John ran to Professor Xavier’s office. When he got to the door, he lifted his hand to knock. From behind him, a voice came out of the silence. “John. I am here. What do you need?” said Professor X. “Professor, I need to change rooms,” said John, who refused to raise his eyes to the Professor. He felt ridiculous. First, he asked the Professor if he could room with Bobby. Now, he was asking to have a different roommate. “I know what is wrong,” replied the Professor. This startled John, causing him to meet eyes with the man in the wheelchair. “There aren’t anymore dorms open anyways. I am sorry but you will have to just be content with what you have now. I wish I could help.” “But Professor,” pleaded John, “If you know what is wrong, why won’t you do anything about it?” “Because it is better to cope with your problems than run away from them.” John stopped and pondered. He eventually nodded. “Now go back and work it out with Bobby,” said Professor X. John walked back to his dorm. What do I say? SHould I apologize for everything I said? Or do I just say I meant it? Should I immediately expect him to apologize? Will he even talk to me still? I hope he doesn’t hate me now. John returned to his dorm and knocked on the door. Almost immediately, the door swung open. Bobby was standing there, looking incredibly vulnerable. “Before you say anything,” said Bobby, “I wanted to apologize. I should have been nicer to you and I should have been more accepting. I have my own person problems. I am sorry for taking them out on you.” John’s jaw dropped as he took in what had just happened. “That’s fine, I guess,” he replied. “All I wanted was a friend and I thought I would at least find one in my roommate.” Bobby frowned. “Well then can we start over? I am Bobby. My power is that I can freeze or cool anything.” John laughed. “Oh the irony. I control fire. Oh and I am Saint-John, but I prefer John.” Bobby grasped John’s hand and shook it. They smiled at each other and began to talk. They didn’t discuss anything in particular, mostly their past, their families, their powers. They wanted to know everything about each other. The next day, they talked, walked to class together, and joked, as if nothing had gone wrong.
