Jean's eyes widened as she caught a flash of the doctor's panicked thoughts. Ethine was
crashing. Wordlessly she darted from the room, Nightcrawler and Storm on her heels. It was chaos. Machines were beeping shrilly and people in scrubs rushed to and fro. In the middle of it all Dr.Cox stood by Ethine's bed, expression stoney as he barked out orders, difibrilator in hand. He seemed transformed, changed in the face of crisis. He had dropped the carefully cultivated facade of snide bravado like a threadbare garment.

They heard him shout "Clear," and watched in tense silence as the girl's slender body arched violently. The mutants watched as Dr.Cox repeated the process, rubbing the paddles together before once again pressing them to Ethine's body, sending a powerful electric shock coursing through her already battered form. The minutes slipped by, but eventually the machines the girl was hooked to quieted, her breathing and heart-rate steady.

"She can't be moved." Dr.Cox said in tight, clipped tones, flicking his latex gloves into a trash-bin as the nurses and interns filed out of the room. He looked to each of them in turn before shoulding past out of the room. Nightcawler watched him go, running a hand through his hair before turning his gaze back to the two women.

"What do we do now?" He asked quietly.

"She can't stay here. A hospital like this is the worst place for an empath." Jean said immediately.

"We cannot move her though." Nightcrawler protested. "You saw what just happened."

"The best we can do right now is keep an eye on her and be ready to get her out when she's stable enough." Storm murmured reasonably. "Between us three, Cyclops, Logan and Gambit we should be able to keep the Hospital under surveilance. We can get Sage to help too, I'm sure."

"It's the only plan we have." Nightcrawler said with a meaningful glance Jean's way. Jean still looked dubious, but nodded.

"She'll stay for now, but first oppurtunity we get, we're moving her to the institute." She sighed, conceding defeat. She moved to the girl's bedside, taking the seat vacated by Dr.Cox earlier. Ethine was a promising student with impressive control over her gift. Maybe they could still find some way to communicate what was happening, reasure her, and perhaps give her a little help waking up. Taking a deep breath, Jean took the empath's hand in hers, easing her way into the girl's mind. She was afraid and in pain, not all of it hers. Getting her out quickly became doubly important, but now she was more concerned with helping the girl wake up. She was drowning in her own mind.

She was just about to give up when she felt another presence, faint at first, but familiar. Slowly the telepath opened her eyes, searching for the source of the mental signature that Ethine seemed to be using as an anchor. What she found surprised her. Dr.Cox was standing at the foot of her bed, a cup of coffee in one hand as he looked over her chart. Using Ethine as a conduit, Jean could feel the confidence he exuded. She could feel the empath drawing from his strength, and was reassured by how deeply he cared for his patients and how hard he worked to help them.

Slightly bemused, Jean continued to watch as Dr.Cox placed his stethescope in his ears, listening intently to Ethine's heart. That simple contact worked wonders as well. Jean supposed that it was because Ethine felt only what was going on in the doctor's mind and did not see the arrogance in his stance or carefully cultivated mask of indifference.

Jean broke contact, glancing at the doctor as he bent over the girl. He barely seemed to notice the other three people in the room, so intent was he on his patient. Out in the hallway, a knot of people at the nurse's station watched the proceedings, muttering to each other. He was halfway through his round of tests before he realized another pair of eyes were watching. Dr.Cox, busily filling in more information on Ethine's chart, did a double take before letting out a celebratory whoop, startling everyone in the room. His elation brought an involuntary smile to the empath's face.

"You had us real worried, there. You really did." He told her finally, carefully taking one of her hands in his and grinning toothily down at her.
