At midday, as she and Rogue walked into the danger room, Lizi felt like she was being let into some kind of secret club. All the X-Men she had met earlier were gathered in an overhead control room with large glass panels, with the exception of Rogue who was walking at her side.
“Okay then. Is this like one of those rooms where everyone stares at you until you throw chairs against the windows? No, it can’t be,” Lizi said, shaking her head. “They all have one-way mirrors so you know people are watching you but you can’t watch them back.” At her side, Rogue laughed.
“No sugah, its nothing like that!”

Suddenly before Lizi’s very eyes, Professor Xavier materialised in front of them. Rogue looked up and frowned.
“Ah thought ah told you t’ give us a little warning before any of you did tha’,” she said grumpily. Lizi only cocked her head to the side and smiled.
“Cool mental projection. If you can do that with that little of concentration then you must really be a powerful telepath.” Lizi said, the admiration in her voice obvious. Rogue stared at her mouth agape.
“Have yah never heard of him! The professor is the most powerful telepath alive today!” Lizi turned her eyes to Rogue briefly and then, registering what she had said she turned her eyes up towards the control booth and locked eyes with Professor Xavier. She returned her gaze to the slightly translucent image of him in front of her and shifted her weight. Professor Xavier shifted almost imperceptibly in his chair as he felt Lizi put up extra psychic barriers around herself. Lizi’s eyes flickered as she felt a small prickling sensation, as if an insect was crawling along the base of her mind. She glanced at professor Xavier who was still watching her intently and began to subconsciously scan the people overhead. She noticed immense psychic powers in Jean but she seemed to be doing nothing more than watching the exchange without her powers. As Lizi reached out towards Betsy she heard Betsy’s cool English accent in her head, * you will learn very quickly, living here, not to go looking in places that do not concern you. *
*Sorry. I can feel someone beginning to press my barriers and wanted to know who it was.*
*Well I am sure that all in this institute would sincerely appreciate it if you did not accuse us all of trying to gain access to your mind on your first meeting of us. * Betsy telepathically ‘replied’ snippily. Lizi blushed slightly as she felt the message get transmitted to all the assembled mutants and they turned to look at her.
“Ok. I guess you all have the ability to communicate telepathically then.”
“They all can receive messages and send them if the communication line stays open. Also, if they concentrate hard enough they can all contact me,” professor Xavier said, bringing Lizi’s attention back to the image flickering in front of her.
“Hey, look. I’m sorry if I offended any of you guys but I felt,” Lizi paused, closed her eyes and re-opened them after a split second, “still feel, a presence on the fringes of my subconscious.” Suddenly Lizi straightened and flicked her gaze to Ororo. “Never mind,” Lizi said softly. “It’s passed.”

Rogue looked about her, looked at Lizi and followed her gaze to where Ororo was staring back at Lizi. As Rogue opened her mouth to speak Betsy loudly called out, “Are we going to do anything here?” Jean laughed almost silently and looked at Betsy. Lizi watched from the ground as Betsy almost glared at Jean, evidently being admonished by a superior.
“Ok, so what is this place then?” Lizi asked, eyes flicking towards Ororo and then around the room and down to Rogue, finally resting the Professor’s mental projection.
“This is the Danger Room. It is part gymnasium, part virtual reality training complex. Although it currently looks like just a large room with nothing in it, I assure you it is far more. Using a combination of psychic projection, mechanical foes and interactive environment, it is possible to create any combat situation possible,” Professor Xavier replied proudly. Seeing Lizi’s slightly awestruck expression, he added with a smile, “we also have a few extremely large, well equipped regular gymnasiums and a couple swimming pools for simple training.” Hearing Hank’s slight cough, Lizi looked up. “Of course, some individuals powers mean that the gymnasium just does not stretch them,” the Professor added smiling widely.
“Ok,” Lizi said slowly. “How do you mean the room can use psychic projection. Surely if a person is psychically projecting something, any lapse in concentration will cause the room to revert to its natural state. Also surely the people in the environment, if they are stretched or concentrating too hard, it will take them out of that environment. Not to brag, but it has been a long time since I fell into being tricked like that. I’m not saying I’m immune but here is a safe environment,” she trailed off, gesturing with her arm. Professor X said nothing, just choosing to calmly look at Lizi. Lizi’s eyes caught sight of a slight movement and she watched Jean press a couple of buttons in sequence and Lizi watched in amazement as the control room above them disappeared and the room turned into a shopping mall. Lizi turned to Rogue who merely looked around her in interest.

Lizi stepped forwards, passing by the Professor’s image. She walked forward towards a fountain and reached out carefully towards it. Lizi smiled quietly as she brought her fingers back wet.
“Impressive,” she said breathily. Professor X’s image disappeared behind her and as Lizi turned, Rogue stepped forward.
“Ready for a couple o’ lil’ tests sugah? Impress us with whatcha got?” Rogue said brightly. Lizi shook herself out of her reverie and glanced up at the control box, briefly gazing at Ororo.
“Oh yeah,” Lizi said grinning. “I think I could impress a couple of people here.”
“She’s watching don’t worry,” Rogue whispered in Lizi’s ear, hugging Lizi. At this, Lizi blushed and glanced back up, to notice Scott scowling slightly. Rogue followed her gaze and smiled. Rogue grinned and said simply, “show ‘em”, winked and walked out. Lizi took a deep breath and as the doors beeped shut behind Rogue’s departing form, the room changed again into a clearing in the middle of a tropical jungle. As four giant monsters, seemingly from a young child’s nightmare leapt out the bushes to Lizi’s left, she grinned and waited. This is what she was built for.

Two hours later, Jean’s voice sounded clearly in Lizi’s head, *That will do. Relax and we shall all be down in a moment. * Lizi slumped to her knees and began panting heavily. By the time the doors beeped open. Lizi had regained her feet and was leaning side on against a wall examining her left hand, which had a very nasty gash on it. Rogue was first through the doors, flying rapidly towards Lizi and landing beside her.
“That was amazing!” she exclaimed. Lizi smiled wearily,
“Thanks. Doesn’t feel too amazing though.”
“Oh, don’t worry. We all get pushed the first time. Shoulda seen me the first day ah’ came here. Ah was all over the place. Crashed into walls and stuff!” At this, Lizi laughed and relaxed slightly, wincing as she poked at her hand a little too hard.
“Here, let me have a look,” said the redheaded Jean, gazing at Lizi with green eyes and reaching for her injured hand.
“That’s ok red, I’ll take care of it if you don’t mind. Something about other people fiddling with things that I can do makes me a bit uncomfortable,” Lizi replied, gently pulling her hand back. “If someone could just show me where I could get some stuff for it?” she asked as the rest of the X-Men reached them.
“Rogue, perhaps you would like to show Lizi to the infirmary?” Professor X asked.
“Oh, ah gotta call someone. Perhaps someone else could walk down with her? Ororo?” Rogue asked looking over to the slender African lady stood to the side of the group, close behind Jean, concern etched across her face. At the mention of her name, Ororo straightened and nodded slightly.
“I would be happy to,” she said elegantly, and then her eyes narrowing slightly and her lips curled up into an slight amused smile she asked, “who do you need to call Rogue?”
“Oh. Ah need to call, uhm someone about this thing,” Rogue stuttered slightly. Gambit smoothly stepped in.
“Cherie here be needin’ t’ call th’ ol’ hospital about our ol’ friend Carol. We like t’ keep up wit’ her don’t we Cherie?”
Rogue’s eyes softened and she smiled gratefully at Remy.
“That’s it exactly. Ah jus’ didn’t wanna say coz ah get a bit nervous about talking about her an’ stuff,” Rogue said, shifting slightly. Ororo smiled, clearly not buying it but not wanting to push her friend and nodded her understanding.
“Ok then, Ororo if you would like to escort Lizi to the infirmary, perhaps we could meet in the study when you are ready Lizi?” Professor X said, choosing to ignore the cover-up from Rogue. Lizi only nodded, gazing at Ororo. At this the Professor turned and left the room, the X-Men following leaving Lizi and Ororo alone.
