Jono stuck his head out of the basement door and relaxed marginally. Good. They were all gone. Mostly. He knew that the Professor was still there, as was Jean and possibly Scott, but they would not bother him. Some of the younger mutants had gone home for the end of summer but most of them had been sent into town with Betsy and Cecilia, both visiting to help out while the usual chaperones were gone. He eased out into the hall and shut the door behind him, wishing he could sigh to denote relief at the resounding silence in the house. No screaming, no sniping, no random crying behind closed doors or potted plants. No one was having a crisis… He could relax a little more. He walked quickly but quietly down the hall, heading for the foyer and then to the rec room. He could finally use the big screen now, and see what the characters were doing instead of just hearing their voices. It was not his fault, he reflected, that no one in the house appreciated a good film noir when they saw it, especially a classic like _The Maltese Falcon. _ He slipped the DVD into the player and retrieved the remote, retreating to the sofa to sprawl out and watch the movie. He did miss Paige’s constant chatter, he thought a shade glumly, but it would be nice to just havee tie time where he did not have to worry about trying to turn down her advances, no matter how badly he wanted them and how much he wanted to respond to them, just because of a pesky thing like immanent death getting in the way. Every time Paige touched him, he remembered the day he became the way he was, the day he died and nearly killed the one he swore he would never hurt…1
“God damn it!”
Jono did a fair job of not jumping out of his skin at Tabby’s cry. Instead, he hit stop on the remote control, stood and turned to face her with one brow raised. _* Problem? _*
“Everyone fucking left!” she complained, shutting the front door behind her. She slouched into the rec room, Lucas in a carrier in front of her making it difficult to truly achieve a believable skulk. “I needed to talk to someone.”
Jono shrugged. _* Sorry then. I’m nobody, as you well know. And good bye. _* He pointedly turned his back on her and resumed his seat on the sofa, hitting play just as Sam Spade received word about his partner.
Tabby shifted from foot to foot for a moment, the snuffling Lucas growing heavier by the second. She really should be letting him down on the floor to crawl around and try to walk, she thought, but so long as he was in the carrier, she could pretend as if she had something urgent to do and not that she really wanted to just sit and wait for someone she wanted to talk to to come back. “So Jon Jono hit pause and craned his neck to glare at her. _*Aren’t you supposed to be in Boston? _* he questioned her accusingly. _*Far away from here? _*
“It’s not that far,” she retorted, “and I didn’t have anyone to watch Lucas so I couldn’t go.”
_*What about Wanda? _* he asked, wincing inwardly as he realized that he was actually encouraging her to stay and talk.
Tabby shrugged again and sighed. “She had stuff to do…” She glanced up at him quickly, then away. “Um, I don’t guess the Professor is here, huh?” Lucas kicked his legs idly and she gave in, unfastening the carrier carefully and lowering him to the floor after giving him his teething biscuit, where he began crawling rapidly, cooing at the Oriental rug.
Jono gave up. He hit stop again and turned the television off. _*He’s doing some paperwork upstairs with his accountant. Look, I’ll watch the little bugger if you have somewhere else to be… _* He could at least watch his movie then, he thought. Kids were easy enough to entertain, just let ‘em suck on your finger or destroy priceless carpets… _*Tabby, your son… _*
“Lucas!” shilediled, leaping to grab him as he proceeded to smear partially masticated zwieback into the fibers of the antique rug. “What kind of nutjob keeps an expensive rug on the floor anyway?”
_*The kind with more money than God, _* Jono opined, handing her a tissue from the box on the table and taking Lucas from her so that she could clean up the mess.
Tabby was furious. The fight with Wanda had only escalated after they left the mansion the night before and it had turned into something far uglier than either had intended, drawing in life choices, past mistakes and potential future ones. The one thing that had been tacitly off limits was Lucas. Neither one mentioned him nor the other’s interactions with him, for which Wanda had been grateful. Pietro, however, was dragged into it, as was Magneto’s name. Unwillingly, she burst out with her chief complaint, rocking back on her heels and balling the tissue in her fist. “She’s gone to find her fucking father!” she said hotly. “She said she wanted to see if maybe he was right after all!”
Jono stared at her for a moment, holding Lucas carefully away from his wrappings, which he gathered were a baby attractant from the way the child was reaching for them and making “ma ma ma ma ma ma ma” noises. _*Wanda… is going to Magneto? _*
“Yes!” Tabby exclaimed as if he were a particularly simple child and jmastmastering a basic skill. “And I don’t know if she’s coming back!”
Jono took the zwieback from Lucas and set him carefully on the floor, one eye on the child as he spto Tto Tabby. _*Are you sure? Maybe she’s just having a hissy fit and gone off to sulk. _*
“You can’t get more sure than her telling me to my face that she was going to find him. She thinks…” she paused, gulping for air to keep back tears that she did not want to come, “she thinks that we need to choose sides, to pick now… I told her there weren’t any sides to pick, just do what we needed to in order to survive but…”
Jono nodded. _*Right. Well, that’s certainly a cold slap in the crotch, isn’t it? _*
“Jono,” she complained, “I need help!”
_*We all do, ducks, but I’m not going to be the one to give it. _*
Tabby narrowed her eyes and snarled soundlessly before speaking again. “Fine. I’ll just have to wait here until someone who gives a fuck gets back.” She scooped Lucas up and her arms and flung herself onto the sofa next to Jono. “What’re we watching?”
_*My brains melt out of my ears… _*

1 I know I’ve noted Jono’s origins before, but here’s another link, lol. It’ll spoil the comics for you if you read the whole thing so go at your won rishttphttp://husk.cacophany.com/chamber.html
