Chapter 27

"A very appropriate choice, Mr. Wagner." Worthington said. A guilty look was exchanged quickly by the teens. But he continued. "I came here to offer my most humble appologies for what happened last night." Kurt glanced at the clock beside Kitty\ed. ed. It was nearing four in the morning, he hadn't realized how much time had passed.

"Why are you appologizing to me?" The young woman asked. "It was my creepy ex-boyfriend who totaled your building."

"A building in which I assured Charles would be safe for his children to live." His expression was grim. "I was confident that I'd taken every precaution to keep you and my other tennants safe, I just didn't have the foresight to see this kind of attack happening. It was a very foolish mistake on my part." His wings drooped a little, they reflected his moods as effectively as Kurt's tail, Kitty mused. But she saw no reason for him to be appologizing. She made a scoffing sound. It came out a little messy due to the sedative that remained in her system. She wiped her mouth delicately.

"With all due respect, Mr. Worthington." She began, placing the flowers in the pitcher of water that sat next to her drinking glass on thele ble beside her bed.

"Please, call me Warren."

"Sure, Warren, as I was saying, As much as I appreciate you coming down here to try and take on all of this responsibility, the truth is, I'm over eighteen, and this isn't a prison." She gestured around her to the medlab and surrounding house. "The Professor made it clear that we can leave here anytime and that it is voluntarily that we attend. I graduated from school and I can legally live wherever I like. I accepted his suggestion because he said it was a mutant-friendly apartment building and I didn't want a landlord to hassle me if I forgot to open my door some morning before leaving." She held out a hand, palm facing the multi-millionaire. "So please, don't martyr yourself on my account."

Warren looked at her curiously for a moment. He raised his eyebrows and shook his golden head. "You may want to re-think your position Ms. Pryde."

"Kitty, please." She said.

"Of course, Kitty. I came here to also to make amends and offer, shall we say, compensation for your lost belongings." Kitty's dark brows rose with interest.

"Just what kind of compensation are we talking about here, Warren?" She observed him with exaggerated shrewdness.

"All of my properties are fully insured, and along with the replacement of your belongings, I was going to offer you and your roommate an apartment upgrade in one of my other buildings." He paused. "The same building where I live, in fact. At the same rental rate you currently have."

Kitty wondered if the bubbly euphoric feeling from the sedative was contagious. She knew she wasn't currently paying Worthington the full amount that he could be getting for a nice two bedroom place in the good part of town, but to move to the place where he lived and still be paying chicken feed for it was more than generous.

"Are you serious?"

"Completely."

"Well, Mr. Wothington, I'll have to discuss it with Rogue, but it sounds like a pretty good offer to me."
tho thought you were calling me Warren." A smile quirked at the corner of his perfect mouth. "Why the sudden change?"

"Well-" Kitty said. "First you offer me flowers, then the familiar address, 'Call me Warren,' next you ask me to move in with you. I'm just taking our relationship back a step here." Kurt nearly choked.

"Uh, Kitty's on drugs, Herr Worthington." He stammered; Warren's expression was one of startled amusement.

"Well, Ms. Pryde." He said, walking to her bedside, taking care that his great wings didn't disturb any of the medical equipment that took up space nearest her. "I will certainly be more careful in the future not to offend a lady of such stern morals with my over-eager advances." He lifted her hand with a serious expression and tuned it over carefully to avoid the IV needle that was taped into place. He bowed over her palm and pressed an gallant kiss to the soft skin. "I await your response to my offer," he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, "with baited breath." Then, nodding to Kurt, he left the cubicle, sweeping out the curtains dramatically with his right wing. They both heard him chuckling to himself as he walked back to Henry McCoy's office.

Kitty leaned sideways and with a big grin, watched Warren's retreating backside. "Damn." She said with a whistle. "I may really look forward to living in the same building with that guy." When Kurt made a disgusted noise, she patted the spot next to her on the bed. "Don't be so dramatic, Nurse Wagner." She said with a smile. "I may be in love with you, but I haven't been struck blind." Kurt stood to approach the bed but halted when he heard Hank's voice from the other side of the curtains.

"I'm afraid I must insist that you return to your room, Kurt." He said, stepping into view. He did look odd wearing his custom made labcoat that barely covered his massive muscles. His small spectacles rode low on his nose and he gave them a chastizing look. "When you two are together, you both end up pretty battered, and Kitty, you do need your sleep."

"Oh sure." Kurt said with mock indignation. "But any old rich guy can come in any time he wants and make all the indecent proposals he wants?" When Hank didn't bat an eyelash, they guessed that he had heard about the conversation from Warren.

"Why certainly, Kurt. Didn't you know that?" He shooed the young German out and dimmed the lights. He promised Kitty that if her vitals were normal in the morning, she'd be allowed out of the medlab first thing. "It may not seem that you did that much, but you split your energy along with your powers when you touched Rogue. And I'd prefer to see that you get at least four more good hours nintninterrupted sleep before I turn you loose." He adjusted the drip in her IV and Kitty drifted back into sweet oblivion.
