Chapter 24
A flash of peach caught Kurt's eye. He could see something between a couple of beams beneath him, It was Kitty's sleepshirt. His night vision was good, and he could make out the sight of Kitty's still form lying beneath him in part of the basement. She was about fifteen feet below him in a pocket of space made by some falling beams. The wall he stood on was shielding her from falling rubble. He called out to Jean and teleported down into the cramped space. He heard her reply that the wall was holding but he needed to hurry.
"Katzchen." He called softly, closing a hand over her shoulder. She didn't move. He turned her over gently, not wanting to do any further injury if she was hurt. He lifted her into his arms and teleported to the spot he'd left Jean and Scott. When he reached the outside, the firetrucks were already pulling up. He handed her to Scott who carried her toward the ambulance. Without his Holowatch, he was more likely to distract the rescuers and be arrested himself.
He saw the Professor's van pull up and his teammates began flying into action. When Jean had told him that Lance was responsible, he'd not been surprised. Accepting a uniform from the van, he dressed quickly and asked the professor if he was able to locate Alvers. Th profesor gave him a warning look before replying.
"He's at the boardinghouse, and I've rendered him unconcious." The older man said. "You're to bring him here to the police." Kurt went to the house in a blink. It looked empty. If Pietro was involved, which he probably was, he'd have cleared out with his sister. Kurt entered warily and went to Lance's room. Kitty's ex had most likely been packing his stuff to leave town. Lance lay in the middle of his floor. When Kurt reached him, he was beginning to wake. He opened his eyes to see a pair of glowing, yellow, slitted eyes staring at him.
"What happened?" He said, sitting up dizzily. "Where's Pietro.
"I wouldn't worry about him right now, Alvers." Kurt said, he was crouched above the other man. "Right now you've got bigger things to be concerned with." Lance just smiled.
"Showed the bitch, didn't I?" He said. "Made the earth move for her one last time." He sneered at Kurt. "Hope you enjoyed her while you had the chance, freak."
Kurt's fist plowed into Lance's face.
"You were never good enough for her, Alvers." He snarled. "No wonder she came looking for something else." He'd meant to drive the man's temper, and he succeeded. The room began to shake, and Kurt took his cue to drag the larger man to his feet and punch him again. The tremors worsened and Lance struck out at the blue-furred man in front of him. He missed and recieved a mightly kick in the side of the head, effectively subduing him. Kurt heard the professor's warning in the back of his head and 'ported back to the apartment building carrying Lance over his shoulders. He dumped him on the ground in front of the police cruisers and walked back to the X-van.
"Kurt." The profesor spoke quietly. He was sitting in the van, keeping tabs on everyone while remaining out of sight.
"I delivered him in one piece, professor." He said, turning away. Then he paused. "You woke him up when I got there."
"Yes I did." The man answered. But he said nothing more. Kurt picked up a spare holowatch from the van and donned his normal disguise.
