"You're sulking."
"Am not."
"I can tell when you're sulking and you're sulking."
Paige threw her book at her brother. "Shut up, Sam." She was waiting for Kitty to change clothes so they could go to town with Remy, but it seemed to be taking her forever.
"You've got a lot of anger inside, you know that?" he sighed, picking up the book from where it landed at his feet and tossed it back.
"Pretty calm for a guy who's girlfriend's dad's gonna kick his ass." Paige leaned back against her pillows and raised a blonde brow at Sam. "So how long you gonna hide in here? Till Sean drops dead or until you work up the guts to kiss Toad and convince the world you're gay?" She folded her arms over her chest at his derisive look and continued, "How the Hell did he find out anyway, you horndog you?"
Sam groaned and kicked his feet against Paige's desk idly. "It just sort of slipped out..."
"So that's how it happened!"
"Oh, fuck you!" he snapped, jumping to his feet. "You don't have a fucking clue, Paige!"
Paige was on her feet and in his face before he even finished speaking. "No, fuck YOU, Sam. You ain't the only one with problems!"
"What? Poor little Paige can't kiss her freaky dead boyfriend? That's fucking sick, you know," he continued, lashing out before he could check his words. "Jono is a living corpse...what the fuck is wrong with you?"
Paige felt the color drain from her face even as it rose in Sam's. She felt a cold lump of disgust for her brother in the pit of her stomach, spreading through her body and making gooseflesh rise on her arms. "I thought you were friends," she said numbly after a silent moment. "I thought you liked Jono..."
"I do," he sighed. "But that's not the point..." He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I didn't mean..."
"Get out of my room," Paige whispered tersely. "I can't look at you right now." She did not even attempt to make eye contact but she knew the expression on his face was a mixture of anger, embarrassment and pride. She had seen it before many times growing up and it only served to irritate her now. "Get out, Sam. GO!" She shoved him hard on his chest, succeeding only in budging him a few inches.
"Paige, listen to me! I was angry and I didn't mean to say that"! He grabbed his sister's wrists and tried to hold her still, but she kicked his shin hard enough to make him yelp.
"Fine, you stay here, I'll go!" She twisted free, earning a friction burn on her wrists for her trouble as she broke away and strode to the door. The door slammed hard enough to rattle her pictures loose on the walls.

Kitty flung open her door with a sigh, turning away before Paige could get a word out. Clad only on her jeans and a bra, she headed back to her dresser. "I'm almost done! I just need a shirt!" She paused and turned back slowly. "Why are you crying? Did Jono do something else?"
Paige sniffled and shook her head. Her wrists were still red and sore, making her even more irritated with her brother. She husked the skin of her arms without a second thought, replacing old with new and pale. "Sam's a jackass."
"Well..." Kitty pulled a t-shirt out of the drawer without looking and pulled it over her head. "I'm not going to argue there. He's a guy after all. Does this make me look chunky?"
"Huh? Uh, no. You look fine. And way to be a man hater there, Kit..." Paige sighed and picked up her husked skin, wondering where to put it. "Sam's just kind of...freaked out."
Kitty made a noncommittal noise and grabbed her purse. "I don't hate men but I'm sort of off the older folks since last month. I don't trust the Professor and Logan's kind of freaking me out...I think he's hiding something."
"Look, Velma1, just because he's an adult male doesn't mean he's lying to you!" Paige was glad to have some diversion from her brief fight with her brother. She did not want to think of what his words would mean to her next time she was alone with Jono, if he ever got out of his own snit about his lack of seeming life.
"Case in point," Kitty murmured. They had been making their way down the stairs to the foyer when she drew to a halt on the last step, Paige nearly colliding with her from behind. "What's he up to?"
Beast crossed from the study to the rec room without looking up from a sheaf of papers in his hand. "Looks like he's reading," Paige said dryly.
"Beast is supposed to be helping Cecilia set up her new office. What's he doing back here?" Kitty whispered softly, leaning forward to track his progress. "Come on."
"Maybe he's running late," Paige suggested. "Kitty, just because he's still here doesn't mean something sinister is going on..." She stopped short, grabbing the back of Kitty's shirt just in time. "Or not..."
Kitty frowned and followed the direction of Paige's gaze. Anne and Aggie were huddled together over a smooth wooden box, whispering conspiratorially. "And?" she asked quietly. "I don't think you're playing this game right, Paige..."
"Listen, chatterbox!" Paige shook her lightly and nodded in the direction of the girls. They were kneeling in the corner of the rec room, next to the ficus hung with Christmas lights even that early in the year, their voices rising and falling in unison.
"English that isn't," Kitty breathed after a moment. "Very _Children of the Corn _" she added sotto voce.
"Come on," Paige murmured. "Move before they see us."
"They're too busy to notice you," a male voice put in casually from behind them.
Kitty bit down on her tongue to hold back her cry of surprise. She turned as Paige did, both trying to look casual. "Um, hi, Ernie..." She smiled and tried to look perky. "We're going into town with Remy. Would you like to come?"
Ernie cocked his head to one side and looked from Paige to Kitty and back again. "Yes. I think that would be lovely..." He offered them his elbows. "Shall we?"
Paige felt her eyes widen. "Oh, fuck," she mouthed to Kitty over Ernie's head. Kitty just nodded in agreement.
1 Gratuitous Scooby Doo reference. Velma was the smart one.
