Just for you, Anon. Two more chapters. Enjoy. And I had two cookies because I'm such a good girl.
Chapter 21
Rogue watched the SUV drive out of the gate and away. She shook her head and smiled. Who’d have guessed it? Kurt and Logan. What a trip.
She slowly walked back inside, listening to the others yammering on about how they should have known by the way Logan and Kurt had been acting. And how weird it all was. The undertones were on the verge of diragotry, but she flicked a glare towards Bobby, Sam and Ray and dared them to say another word against either Kurt or Logan in her presence.
Why she’d taken on the mantle of their cause, Rogue wasn’t sure, except she knew what it was like to be very different, to be unable to show her affection to those she cared about. And why was loving a person of your own sex such a bad thing, anyway? Shouldn’t love be love, regardless?
She made her way up to Kitty’s room, knocked, waited, but no answer came. “Kitty?” Rogue said opening the door.
Kitty sat on the balcony, her back to one wall, staring out over the lawn. Had she watched Kurt and Logan leave?
“Hey there,” Rogue said.
Kitty didn’t look up, but she sniffed and wiped at her eyes.
Rogue crossed to the balcony and looked down on Kitty and wondered what the worst prejudice Kitty had ever suffered on a personal level. Yeah, they’d all gotten ragged at school for being mutants, but nothing ly bly bad had been directed at Kitty Pryde. Rogue was almost certain of that.
Kurt, on the other hand, had spent his entire life hiding from people who thought he was a demon, people who wanted to hurt him, kill him even. That Kitty begrudge Kurt any happiness irked Rogue to no end.
She leaned against the wall, arms crossed, but Kitty refused to look up at her.
“What’s the matter, Kitty? Your hero, Logan get knocked off his pedestal?”
That got a rise. Kitty turned a glare up at Rogue.
“He turn out to be human after all?” Rogue continued.
“Shut up!” Kitty yelled. “Leave me alone.”
“I don’t think so. What exactly is your problem anyway? All we do is whine around here how nobody tolerates us because we’re different. Now you just tell me what the difference is between your intolerance towards Kurt and Logan and the rest of the worlds’ intolerance towards us.”
“There’s...there’s all kinds of differences,” Kitty said, but didn’t sound all that convinced.
Rogue sat crossed-legged and leaned forward. “Name one.”
“They’re guys.”
Rogue gave a snort. “I think we’ve all noticed that, but how’s that make it all right for you to act this way about ‘em?”
Kitty wrinkled her nose and looked uncomfortable. “I just don’t see how they could...like each other...that way.”
“Oh, I get it. Because you can’t see it, it must be wrong, that it?”
“Stop putting words in my mouth,” Kitty said, hands balled into fists. “Why don’t you just go away? You don’t understand anything.”
“I’m not goin’ away and I do understand.” And suddenly she did understand. “You and Kurt have gotten to be pretty good friends, haven’t you?”
Kitty’s mouth took on a pout, like she might start crying again. “I thought so, but obviously I don’t know him at all. Friends would tell each other things like this.”
“Except Kurt’s been through hell lately,” Rogue said. “And he’s tryin’ to protect us from what Trask did to him and Logan. He doesn’t want us to know all the gory details because maybe...just maybe what happened to him was worse than what we could imagine. You ever think of that?”
Kitty looked away. “I guess I didn’t think of it that way. I just thought he didn’t want to talk about it because...I don’t know why...because it hurt too much.” Kitty turned back to Rogue and pierced her with a sharp gaze. “But what’s that got to do with Kurt and Logan being together? How does a person change like that, both of them?”
“I don’t know,” Rogue said. “But I bet it has everythin’ to do with what happened to them when they were held prisoner by that Trask guy. I mean, maybe goin’ through an ordeal together they formed some kind of bond, you know, a connection to each other. Maybe it’s not so unnatural for two people, even two guys, to find, I don’t know, comfort with each other.”
“But Kurt always seemed to like girls,” Kitty said. “I mean, he seemed to really like Amanda.”
“And look what happened?” Rogue replied. “Her parents sent her away to get her away from him. What ou tou think his chances are of findin’ another girl who doesn’t mind him bein’ blue and furry with pointed ears and a tail?”
“I didn’t mind,” Kitty said wistfully.
“But you weren’t attracted to him. He’s like a brother to you and to me. His dating pool is pretty shallow. And haven’t you heard of bi-sexuality? The only reason we’re so stuck on the opposite sex is because society dictates that anythin’ else is wrong.”
Kitty looked at Rogue with new interest. “You ever been attracted to a girl?”
Rogue thought about it and shook her head. “Nah, not really, but I’m not sayin’ it couldn’t happen. You just never know.”
“So what about Logan?” Kitty said, her mouth quirking into an uneasy grin.
“What about him?” Rogue said with a grin of her own. “It feels kinda weird thinkin’ of Logan with anybody. We have no idea who he’s dated. I don’t think he even knows.”
Kitty shook her head. “I still don’t get it. I still have trouble seeing it.”
“We don’t have to “get it,” Rogue stated. “We just don’t have the right to judge.”
“It’s just so strange. I really freaked out, didn’t I?”
“Big time. And you set the tone for a big confrontation between Scott and Logan.”
“Scott,” Kitty said with a sigh. “I don’t see Scott approving of a same sex relationship, at least not between two people living in this house.”
“He didn’t and some not too nice words were said. Logan didn’t wait around to argue either.”
“I know, I saw them leave.” Kitty looked miserable, her eyes puffy from crying and an expression of regret on her face. “Oh Rogue, I don’t want to lose Kurt’s friendship or Logan’s, but I don’t know how to fix this.”
“Well,” Rogue said, pushing up to stand. “You’ve got a few days to think of a way.”
