Chapter 21

Two days later Charles took Erik to the lower levels of the building to show him his creation. He knew he could trust Erik, and didn’t believe any harm would come from showing it to him. The damn thing didn’t work anyway, so it really didn’t matter.

“Where are we going?” Erik asked as they were walking toward one particular chamber.

“I want to show you something,” Charles replied. “Something you have never seen before.”

“What?”

Charles smiled to himself. “Hmm, good question. I wish I knew…” he murmured.

The answer left Erik slightly puzzled, but he didn’t ask again, but instead hoped seeing the object would still his curiosity.

They kept walking until they reached a large closed metal gate that obviously marked the entrance to something important. Erik couldn’t help shivering. He didn’t like having so much metal around him, as he wasn’t sure he could control his magnetic powers. Even though Xavier hadn’t told him this was it, he knew it by instinct.

“Wait here, Erik,” Charles said before he went to a number plate beside the gate, pressing the code that would make it open.

The doors slowly slid apart. At first Erik couldn’t see anything inside. It was too dark. But after a while the illumination came, and before him was the largest chamber he had ever seen. The room seemed completely spherical, and it was completely metallic. A narrow platform led to some kind of console, located in the middle of the chamber.

Erik silently wondered what the room’s diameter could be. Surely fifty feet wasn’t enough.

“What IS this?” he said breathlessly. “Charles? How…?”

“Erik, come,” Charles replied solemnly. “I’ll show you.”

He softly grasped Erik’s wrist and started pulling him toward the entrance. Erik was reluctant.

“N..no.. I am scared of heights…” he stuttered.

Charles smiled a reassuring smile. “It is alright. Come on now. You won’t fall.”

Erik gave in and followed Xavier to the console. “What is this thing?” he asked once more.

“I call it Cerebro,” Charles replied. “My power allows me to read other people’s minds, and I started building this device to amplify my power so I could locate minds at great distances. Bnfornfortunately Cerebro doesn’t quite work as it should, and I don’t seem able to figure out what is wrong.”

“Cerebro…” Erik murmured. “But… Who are you trying to locate?”

“Other mutants, for once. We don’t know how many there are out there… All alone, needing help. Just like you,” he added with a sad smile. “Be lucky Cerebro behaved the day I found you. Otherwise you probably wouldn’t have been alive today.”

“You used that thing to find me?” Erik asked bemusedly.

“I was testing it, yes… And I happened to pick up your brainwaves. When I realized how weak you were I was terrified. So I went to save you.”

Suddenly a small spark of hope ignited inside Erik. If Charles’ device, Cerebro, was specially designed to search for mutants, then maybe… maybe he could use it to search for Logan? He hardly dared to believe there was a chance, but it was his best idea so far.

“Charles,” he said, suddenly excited, “why doesn’t Cerebro work properly?”

“I told you, I don’t know,” Charles replied. The question had frustrated him for years, and he had almost given up his hope to ever find the answer. “But it is something… Something that makes it unstable… I don’t know what, though.”

“Did you design it yourself?”

“Partly. A friend of mine, who studied particle physics, helped me with some of the more… technical difficulties. Why did you ask?” Charles said.

He approached the console and lifted the elegant metallic skullcap, softly stroking the hard smooth steel with his fingers. Cerebro was his life’s work, and yet he’d never be able to finish it. It was sad.

“Could I have a look at the calculations?” Erik asked carefully. He desperately wanted to make Cerebro work, not so much for Charles’ sake, but because it was his only chance to ever LogaLogan again, and he just couldn’t let that chance slip by him.

The look he received from Charles was stunned, to say the least. It was obvious that Charles didn’t believe he’d be able to help, but Erik desperately wanted to prove him wrong. If only he could concentrate and work systematically, he was sure he could succeed in locating the error.

“Erik…” Xavier began, not sure what to say. “How could you possibly help?”

“I spent four years studying physics and aded med mathematics. I am not as ignorant as you think,” Erik explained, and couldn’t help getting annoyed at Charles’ dubious tone. “I only want to look. It won’t hurt.”

Xavier looked like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Could this fragile and mentally unstable man truly be a skilled physicist? It seemed remarkable, but Charles had promised he wouldn’t read Erik’s mind unless he permitted it, and he was going to keep his promise.

“Please?” Erik said. “I think I might be useful.”

Erik sounded confident, and the look in his eyes was firm and determined. He was serious about this, and even without invading his mind Charles started to believe him as well.

“Of course, Erik,” he finally said. “I don’t know how to thank you if you manage. It would be… priceless. What would you like in return?”

“Nothing,” Erik said. “I… I only want a chance to… maybe… if you could… you know… find him…” he whispered, assuming he didn’t need to say Logan’s name.

Charles nodded in silence. He understood perfectly. All Erik wanted in return was a chance to locate his losver, ver, and presently Cerebro was all he could hope for. Gently Xavier approached his new friend and put his comforting hands on his shoulders.

“Of course, Erik,” he said. “I promise you if I can I will. There is also something else I’d like to do for you.”

“What?” Erik asked.

“Help you control your powers. It’s about time you learn to do it. I think I could help you.”

“How? I only want to get rid of them…” Erik murmured. “I don’t have any cool powers, like you. Mine is but a plague. Can you help me get rid of it?”

“No,” Xavier said calmly. “But I can help you do something else.”

“And that is?”

“To get it under control.”
