"That looks terrible."
"Suck it up, girlie," Tabby grinned, shoving the sweater at Rogue.
Wanda snorted and jostled Lucas on one hip. "You've unleashed a monster you know... I dread the day someone perfects gene splicing and they pop out a Kitty-Tabby hybrid."
Rogue rolled her eyes. "A Tabby Cat?" That earned her a general groan and another hideous green sweater, a color Tabby swore was celeriac but looked just the same as the mint one to Rogue.
"Can we go now?" Wanda groaned as Tabby dragged them towards the front of the store.
"One more stop and then we can go back to the apartment," the blonde promised, taking Lucas from Wanda as Rogue regretfully handed the clerk her birthday and Christmas money. Glancing up at Rogue's frown, she asked in semi-seriousness, "You're not doin' this for Toad boy are you?"
She paused for a moment too long. "No. Of course not."
Wanda and Tabby exchanged significant looks. "Breeders," Wanda sighed, "are fucked up."
Tabby glared. "Hello? Breeder here!"
The Scarlet Witch pressed her lips together in a tight line and turned her face away from Tabby. The silence was like ice until the stepped out onto the sidewalk in front of the store. "You need to make up your mind about that."
Rogue pretended not to listen but was secretly fascinated at what seemed to be the middle of an ongoing argument between the girlfriends. Tabby made a choking noise, trying not to swear in front of her son, and hissed, "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"
Wanda frowned. "Later, okay?"
"No, get this over with," Tabby began, but Rogue's presence was suddenly remembered and she sighed, irritated. "Fine. Later."
"Um..." She was distinctly uncomfortable as they drew to a halt outside the drug store. "I think I changed my mind about this part..."
"You're getting dyed, you're getting maver ver and damn it, you're going to like it," Tabby growled, grabbing Rogue's glove clad wrist and dragging her into the store, leaving a frowning Wanda holding Lucas on the sidewalk.
"Your mother is crazy," she cooed. "Yes she is..."
Kurt fairly pounced on Kitty when she opened the car door. "Where've you been?" he asked as he took her hand and pulled her from the car.
She frowned. "The library..." Belated, she remembered to giggle.
"Don't do that."
"What?"
"Act like that..."
"Like what? I don't know what you mean..."
"Yes, you do," he sighed. "Katzchen, you've been acting like some caricature of yourself..."
"Kurt, you're, like, tired or something. I'm fine!" She smiled a little tightly and turned her hand in his to mesh their fingers. "I'm just fine!" she insisted.
He narrowed his eyes and frowned. "Kitty, I know you like I know myself," he said after a brief pause. "Something is wrong and I'm not seeing it...Tell me."
Kitty nearly melted her reserve, but his voice niggled the back of her mind, the words of the day before burning her. "No."
He groaned and took her by her shoulders. "Liebes, bitte...don't do this. You're smarter than that."
"Am I?" she asked archly, phasing from his grasp. "I thought I made hare brained plans and was pushy..."
Kurt took a moment to rest his forehead against the roof of the car and swear under his breath in German and Rom. "Kitty!"
She did not pause as she strode through the kitchen and rec room, slipping on the marble of the foyer but catching herself to stomp up the stairs, Kurt in her wake. "I have things to do, Kurt," she snapped. "We'll talk later."
"Nein," he growled, grabbing her elbow. "Now!"
She was so startled she forgot to phase. "Are you manhandling me?"
"Was?"
She glared at his hand on her arm. "You grabbed me."
"You were walking away!"
"I'm allowed!" she sneered. "Let go!" Kitty jerked free and slammed the door to her room in his face.
Kurt gaped, then glared. He ported into her room less than a minute after she closed him out and stjustjust inside the door, glowering. "I can do this all day if I have to..."
Kitty had just turned on her computer to collect the information she needed and was now being delayed from retrieving. "Kurt, I snapped, I'm sorry." She found that the words she began as placation were actually the truth as she said them. "I acted immature."
Kurt let out a pent-up breath. "Maybe I said something the wrong way, but Katzchen, understand that I did mean what I said. I didn't like your navel ring and I wish you'd think before you act sometimes..."
"I am thinking," she said with a faint smile. "For example, no matter what, I'm making myself wait until eight o'clock tonight, like I said this morning."
Kurt blushed slightly, remembering that morning, but his mood shifted back to the negative because memories of the morning meant memories of his mother's phone call. "Katzchen, I have a favor to ask of you..."
Kitty sighed softly in relief, seeing their fight had come to, if not a halt, at least a temporary pause. "What's that?"
"Could you talk to Katja?"
"Sure! I love talking to your sisters! Is she supposed to call tonight?" She sat down at her desk chair and smiled an honest smile. "Have they thought any more about visiting this summer?"
"Actually, Mama wants me to come home for a month or so, for some shows, but that's not what I wanted to talk about," he waved off the burgeoning "but I'll miss you"s. "Katja and Piotr seem to have...an affection."
Kitty felt a pang for Piotr and his crush on her. It seemed so long ago, to her, that she actually had to think for a moment to remember his exact voice. "So?"
"Piotr," he said slowly, drawing it out. "Heith ith the Brotherhood..."
"And so was Lance, and Todd, and Rogue and Tabby and Wanda...well, not really Wanda... And Evan is there now. Does this mean you hate all of them?"
"I don't hate anyone," he muttered, crossing his arms over his chest diffidently. "But Piotr is wrong for her!"
"How do you figure?" she asked dryly.
"Because she's my sister!" he sighed. "She deserves better than Piotr Rasputin!"
Kitty's frown of disapproval was fleeting but it lingered between them as she weighed her words. "Kurt, I have some work to do... I'll see you tonight at eight."
He felt guilt wash over him like a hot wave. "Katzchen..."
"I promised Jean I'd help her with some stuff and..." she sighed. "I'll see you at eight."
"Ja, eight," he sighed, offering her a tiny wave before he vanished.
Kitty groaned. She dearly loved him but he was trying her patience.
