Chapter 21

Kitty and Rogue had been sharing the apartment for six days when they had an unexpected visitor. Kitty was just finishing the dishes when a knock sounded at the door. Rogue answered it and called out.

"You have company." Kitty wiped her hands on a dishtowel and walked out to the livingroom. She was startled to see Lance Alvers standing in the doorway. He gave her a small smile.

"May I come in?" Kitty nodded and Rogue gave him a digusted look before going into her bedroom and shutting the door. Lance entered and handed her a small, wrapped parcel. "I got this as a house warming gift." She took it and unwrapped it. Inside the box was a picture frame. It was a rich mohogany and very pretty.

"Thank you, Lance. It's beautiful." She was surprised at his mild behavior. He wasn't acting like his usual distant self.

"I made it." He said. "Not that it matters, but I'm glad you like it." His large frame looked awkward in her feminine livingroom. She asked him to sit. He joined her on the couch.

"Lance, don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see you." She began. "But I'm a little surprised that you came by here."

"I guess I should have come by earlier. Or maybe gone to see you at the house before now. I guess I expected you to come back, or call or something" He looked more than a little uncomfortable.

"You asked me for space, Lance. I just gave it to you."

"I feel bad about the way things ended with us, Kitty." He shook his shaggy head. "I was really an asshole. Do you think you can forgive me?"

Kitty smiled at him. "Sure. We have too much history for me to let something like that fester." He smiled hugely at her.

"Do you think you might want to go see a movie sometime?" Kitty smiled again.

"I think that might be nice, sometime, Lance." He leaned forward eagerly and kissed her on the lips. She was startled at first. Then his hand closed over her breast and he pushed forward. Kitty reacted automatically and left Lance with a palm full of empty air. She phased through him and got off the couch.

"Kitty, what's wrong?" He asked, confused. She placed her fists on her hips and regarded him crossly.

"Lance, you can't just jump back to where we were. We had a lot of problems before we broke up. It's why you were so freaked out about me wanting to spend time with you outside of that dump you live in." She felt her anger growing. Lance stood up and glared down at her.

"I came here to tell you that I was wrong and this is how you treat me?" He stomped over to the door and slammed it after he left. Kitty didn't bother to follow him. There was no point in trying to argue with Lance. There was never a point in arguing with him. He simply couldn't see any way besides his own. Rogue came out of her room as soon as the door slammed.

"Went well?" She asked.

"I don't know why I expected anything different." Kitty sighed. "He has so much potential, but he just cant get past the fact that he's a Jackass." She said it casually and Rogue let out a bark of laughter.

"Ah don't know why you kept him around for so long, sister." Then she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively. "Musta made the earth move." Kitty tossed a pillow from the couch at her friend.

Outside the building, Lance stood in the snow and glared up at the building where his ex-girlfriend lived. He went back to the boarding house and looked at it. She was right. It was a dump. And she thought she was too good for him now that she had her own place with that goth bitch, Rogue. He bought a case of beer and returned to the hound dnd did his best to ignore Pietro's leers. After half the cse was gone. He started to listen to his fast-talking roommate. maybe there was a way to salvage his pride after all.
