Part Eighteen

As they approach the veranda, they see that Rogue and her group of friends are out there, most likely for a mid-morning break. The girls smile slyly at the approaching couple…each whispering something to Rogue.

“I can guess what they were doing…they’ve been gone for hours…” Jubilee whispers, a giant grin on her face.

“I can’t blame her…I still can’t get over how gorgeous he is!” Kitty exclaims and Rogue shushes her friends, “Here they come…Hey Logan, Ms. Munroe…”

Ororo looks at the girls and grins, “Good morning, ladies. Taking a break?”

“Yeah, we have a half hour before our next class…hi, Mr. Logan…” Kitty says, her eyes glued to his massive chest again. He glances over at Ororo, who gives him an innocent glare…she did tell him that these girls loved the way he looks without a shirt on, and with what they suspect happened at the gazebo…their minds are really wandering.

“Hey…” he says, trying hard not to laugh at the wide-eyed looks from Rogue’s friends. Ororo has to hold back her giggles as the poor girls suddenly turn red in the face. To spare them any more embarrassment, she announces, “We’re going to get a light breakfast, so we’ll leave you to your…”

“Gossipin’?” Logan supplies, lightening the mood a bit and letting the girls get a grip on their overworked hormones. He walks up the steps with his hand still with Ororo’s…heading into the mansion. Kitty and Jubilee’s eyes have not left the feral for one moment…at least not until Rogue smacks both of them in the back of the head to snap them out of it.

“Could the both of ya’ be anymore obvious?” scolds Rogue.

“Sorry, but I can’t help it…I’m glad he doesn’t teach any classes I have, I’d embarrass myself daily!” Kitty says, fanning herself. Rogue giggles as Jubilee joins in, “Yeah, would definitely be a class that I’d fail, but have perfect attendance!”

Rogue laughs harder as her friends still try to compose themselves. She stares after the departing pair…must’ve been a REAL nice morning!

Ororo and Logan make their way into the kitchen and straight to the refrigerator. Logan grabs some leftover pizza while Ororo picks out some fruit. She frowns as he finishes one slice in two bites, “That’s not breakfast, Logan.”

“No, but it’ll do fer now.” He spies her orange and apple, “That’s all yer gonna eat?”

She smiles, “It may not be a lot, but I’ll be fine. Lunch isn’t too far off you know…”

“Good thing…” he says as he digs into the next piece he has. While they’re munching, Jean comes into the kitchen, “Morning, you two. The Professor wants to see us in the debriefing room in a few minutes…this whole thing isn’t over yet…”

Ororo stops eating her apple, “What else is there? Stryker left with nothing…all the samples were destroyed.” Jean turns to her, “The samples weren’t the only things that he could have left with that would cause any trouble…all listed in his computer files, that weren’t purged before he left. I was able to get some information that is disturbing…I gave it to Hank and the Professor to examine and they should have come up with something now.”

"And I thought this was gonna be an easy day…” Logan complains as he finishes his fourth piece of pizza. Wiping his hands on a towel, he says, “Let’s get this over with…we have some other things planned for today.”

“Really? What do you have planned?” Jean says, suddenly interested.

Ororo looks at Logan and he shrugs, “Just a bunch of nothin’, but still…let’s go.” He heads out the door. Ororo shrugs as well and follows him out, with Jean right behind. They all head for the elevator, running into Scott on the way.

“Hey, Cyke…goin’ down?” Logan asks. Scott frowns, “Yeah…Jean?”

“The Professor needs to see all of us…it probably has to do the information we got from the compound.” Jean supplies as the elevator arrives. The group piles in, heading down…

Professor Xavier turns to look at the group of people entering the room… a grim expression on his face. Scott sees him, “What is the matter, Professor?”

Hank comes up behind them, “Please, have a seat…this may take a while to explain, and it’s not good.” He looks directly at Logan when he says this and Ororo notices. Involuntarily, she grabs his hand…startling him. “’Ro?” he asks, but he stops as he watches everyone else get settled. Xavier comes over to the map table and the outline of a new base comes up. “X-Men…this is the base that has been erected at Niagara Falls. Stryker had another base of operations, just in case Alkali Lake was compromised. From the information Jean was able to obtain from his computers, Henry and I came up with this…” The table moved again and a strange machine emerges. “This device is used for cloning. Dr. Schmidt wasn’t just an expert in reproductive medicine, but in cloning. All this time with Stryker, he had this machine built…with the prospect of being able to create a child with those samples he had. Then, when the progeny was old enough…they planned to clone it, over and over. They will sell them to the highest bidder, and since Stryker wants another Weapon X, the sample most important to him was Logan’s.” Xavier explains. Everyone looks at Logan, just to see his face harden with that knowledge.

Hank steps up next, “We all know that Stryker has been after Logan ever since he left the program, and he found a way that would give him back or as close to him as he could come without it actually being him. Cloning his DNA wasn’t enough, he wanted to make it better; stronger and more lethal. The best way to achieve this was to combine DNA, but he wanted the child to be nurtured by mutants…so the idea for impregnating a mutant came to mind and with Schmidt, it would have been easy. Then, Creed happened and messed the whole plan up…but the interesting thing is that the plan wasn’t changing, a child was to be created between Storm and Logan.”

Ororo looks at Logan in shock, but sees that he’s not surprised. She turns back to Hank, “They wanted me to carry Logan’s child?”

“That was the plan, and when they found out that you couldn’t…they were going to artificially inseminate your eggs with his DNA anyway…create children in test-tubes. You were going to be a harvester for them…creating a strain of super-soldiers for sale.” Hank answers. Her eyes drop, 'Logan’s child…they wanted me to carry Logan’s child…'

Logan stares at her worriedly…he didn’t expect her to react like this, but he waits to say anything to her. Xavier notices her distress and continues the story, “Since Logan destroyed all of the samples, we figured that this would end, but Jean found another stash of samples located in this new base…he had a back-up just in case something went wrong. I’m sure that his idea for a super-soldier hasn’t died because of this, but what he has planned next…I don’t know. We have to keep close tabs on this base…I’m sure that we will see him again, Logan is too important to him. And even though he doesn’t have Logan or Ororo anymore…he still has the plan for the cyborg clones.”

Logan stands, looking at the people around him, “Maybe I need ta’ leave here…ya’ don’t need to be worryin’ about another attack on the mansion ‘cause of me.”

Ororo looks stricken, 'No, he can’t leave…no…'

Xavier shakes his head, “Logan, we’re all at risk here, just because of who we are. You being here does not add anymore danger to us. Jean was dangerous by herself when she was the Dark Phoenix…and we paid a horrible price for that…”

Jean lowers her gaze briefly, knowing that he is saying this for a reason…
Xavier continues, “Everything is done for a reason…and the good may not always be seen when it happens, but it is usually meant to teach us a lesson or grant us something we need. Right now, we need to stick together, so no…you’re not leaving.”

The finality of his statement has Logan nodding his head…Xavier then looks at everyone before he says, “We are going to start new rotations in the security room…try to figure this out, but for now…enjoy the rest of the day. I hear that a cookout is in order for tonight.”

They smile a little, still grimly thinking about what was just told to them…but none more than Ororo and Logan. As they rise to leave, Xavier calls them over, “I know that none of this sits well with either of you, but know that we are all behind you…”

“We know, Professor…we know.” Logan says and he leaves…Ororo staying behind to speak with Xavier. The Nubian weather goddess turns to him and says, “Professor, we have always known that Stryker is obsessed with Logan, but to do this…its lunacy!”

“Ororo, Logan was a weapon for the government, trained to kill. Nothing is more important to him than to get back the thing he created and he believes belongs to him…one way or another. The whole thing about the child being a product of Logan just came up in those files.”

“They did it for a reason…they knew about me and Logan, knew their best bet was to make the child Logan’s so I would actually want it…make sure it was cared for so they can use it for their own evil purposes.” Ororo says, and she shivers. Xavier takes her hand, “It didn’t happen…and if you do have a child, you know we will protect him…or her as well as the parents.”

“You’re assuming a lot, Professor…remember I can’t carry children…”

“Never say never, Ororo…now, I think someone is waiting for you.” Xavier says as he looks pointedly out the door. She smiles as she hurries out the door, looking for Logan.

Ororo makes her way to the rec room where some of the kids are plastered in front of the television watching some videos. Bobby sees her enter and quickly switches it off…knowing that it was against the rules to have the television on during the school day. But, she isn’t worried about that, “Have you guys seen Logan?”

“He vent out back, Ms. Munroe.” Piotr says, looking up from a textbook he’s reading. She nods and runs out.

“Man…that was close…” Bobby says, clicking the videos back on. But, just as he does…she comes back, grabs the remote and turns off the television again…leaving with it. Piotrr chuckles as Bobby frowns at him...trying to figure out a way to turn the set on without a remote. A few of the other students start to throw pillows at him….

Ororo runs out the mansion to the garage area, where she sees Logan wiping down his bike. She stands in the doorway for a minute, just looking at him…wondering what he’s thinking…

“I’m not leavin’…if that’s what yer thinkin’,” he says, still wiping the engine down…not looking at her yet.

“That wasn’t what I was thinking…but now that you mention it…” Ororo returns as she comes over to sit on the seat of the bike. He finally looks up at her, a furrowed look on his face. She smiles as she touches his face, “It’ll be okay, Logan…”

“They wanted ya’ ta’ carry my child…and ya’ know why?” he says angrily.

“So I would want to keep it…I know. But…it didn’t happen.” Ororo says, but he stomps away, furious. “It don’t matter…they were gonna use a child of mine as some damn science project!” His claws unsheathes and he slices off a piece of the wall…trying his best to keep control. Ororo comes over, taking his shoulders…resting her head on his back. “Logan, it didn’t happen and it won’t happen. If we’re blessed to have one, it won’t happen like that…and it won’t be treated like that.” She turns him to face her, “We don’t have to think about that…it’s not possible now anyway. We have each other and that’s enough…”

He grabs her arms, “I can’t keep puttin’ ya’ in harm’s way, ‘Ro…I don’t know what I’d do if…”

She smiles, “Yes, you do…you would go on…being unapproachable for a while, but you would go on…because I would want you to.” He looks as if he is about to argue, but she shakes her head, “Yes, you will…you wouldn’t do that to me, would you? You expect me to go on…why can’t you?”

Logan says as he sighs, in his heart he knows that he wouldn’t want to go on without her…but knowing that he would do it anyway, living but not living, a complete shell.

But, she doesn’t need ta’ know that now…

“I won’t argue wit’cha, darlin’…” then he kisses her forehead. Taking her hand, he brings her over to bike. “I do have a good idea for the rest of the day…maybe even a couple of days. Wanna take a trip?”

Ororo looks at him shocked, “What do you mean? There are still classes that I need…”

Logan places a finger to her lips now, “It’s the weekend…and ya’ haven’t taught a class in sometime…they can spare ya’ for a couple more days.” She sees the excitement in his eyes, realizing that she can’t help herself, “Where do you want to go?”

“Trust me…” he says as he starts to gas up the bike, “Ya’ might wanna change inta’ somethin’ more for the road, and bring a change of clothes. We’ll leave in a half…”

She nods, running off to her room…more than curious to find out what he has on his mind. As she bolts up the steps, she almost crashes into Scott.

“Sorry…” she says, “I’m in a little hurry…” and is about to continue to the loft when he grabs her arm, “Wait, Ororo…can I talk to you for a minute?”

She looks at him, “Okay…what is it?”

Scott stares at her for a second, “Are you okay, I mean…is everything alright?”

“Yes, why would you ask?” she inquires, not comfortable with the way he asks the question…it’s almost as if he has a problem with something. Scott does look a little uneasy as he says, “With what the Professor and Hank told us…I wasn’t sure if you would…”

“Stop right there…I know that you have your reservations when it comes to Logan, but what happened has no more to do with him than it does you.” Ororo explains. She sighs as she adds, “We have always known what was going on with him and we accepted that when we accepted him…I accepted that when I chose to be his mate…I don’t regret it at all.” The windrider places her hand on his shoulder to reassure him, “I am in the safest hands possible…whether you believe that or not.”

Then Ororo takes off up stairs to change…with Scott looking after her. While it’s true that he doesn’t hold Logan in the highest of regards…it has been beat over his head how much Logan loves her, and as much as he would love to prove everyone wrong…he can’t. I hope he realizes what he has…

In lightning speed, Ororo throws a change of clothes for herself into a backpack along with some little personal items, then she changes into a pair of jeans and a pull-over sweater. Grabbing a jacket from behind the door, she rushes back downstairs to the garage.

Logan is there, doing some last minute checks when she comes in. The feral looks at her and smiles, “Are ya’ ready?” he says as he picks up his jacket to put it on.

“Yes, but where are we going?” she asks as she climbs on the back of the cycle. He hands her a helmet before climbing in front of her…getting settled. He fires up the cycle before saying, “It’s a surprise…just hold on tight, it gonna be a pretty long ride.”

She wraps her arms around his waist, snuggling against his back. Ororo closes her eyes as she lets his warmth envelope her, “I’m ready…”

The engine revs loudly as he pulls out of the garage and zooms down the drive to the front gates, entering the code to have them open. Ororo looks at the man she is holding so tightly to…wondering what type of adventure he has in mind for them.

In the mansion, Xavier and Hank looks at them leave…both of them thinking that they need this time to themselves. Life has not been too easy for the both of them lately…

“I really never thought that those two would ever be a couple.” Hank says.
Xavier nods, “I must admit that it was a shock to me as well, but they are perfect for each other…each knows what the other needs and can accommodate those desires a lot better than any of us ever could.” Hank looks at him, “But with Stryker still out there…are they ever going to truly be okay?”

Xavier continues to watch as the cycle moves quickly out of sight, “I don’t know, Henry…I really would like to think so.”

The couple races down the road, enjoying the company and the open spaces. The intense feeling of being free is slowly overtaking them…the heavy thoughts of “what could be” leaving their minds for now. It has been a hard six months…after all of that, they are still here and still together. Ororo snuggles in tighter to him as he places a hand over her joined ones. Such a simple gesture, but it means the world to the both of them…knowing that not long ago they were both in pretty bad shape, mentally and physically. This getaway maybe exactly what they need…

They travel north…past miles and miles of wilderness and into the Canadian frontier. They stop at a small station to pick up some groceries and get more gas before heading even farther out. Ororo loves the scenery; tall, full trees and sparkling streams line the road. The sky is the clearest blue she has ever seen…the colors are bright and vivid. Everything seems at peace out here…and she smiles at the feeling.

Up ahead of them, she can see an outcropping overlooking a beautiful valley…and on it a ranch-style house. He pulls up into the drive of this house, setting the bike against the side of it. Ororo gets off, walking over to the edge of the cliff to look over the amazing view of rolling green hills with a small stream cutting through the middle of it. The trees around it are flush with yellows and greens…nothing could ever be so breathtaking.

“Where are we, Logan?” she breathes, still in awe of this beauty.

“My home…sometimes when I disappear, this is where I come,” he explains, coming behind her to wrap his arms around her waist. He plants a tender kiss on her mark as he looks out at the scene with her. “I can find some sort of peace here…try ta’ gather my thoughts, and I wanted ta’ share it with ya’.”

“Logan…” she murmurs, a tear coming to her eye. She takes hold of his hands, leaning her head back against his shoulder. “This place is beautiful…and for you to share this special place with me…” she starts, then she turns in his arms to stare into those hazel eyes. “I just can’t express how much I love you, Logan.”

“And I love ya’ too, ‘Ro,” he returns, bringing his lips to hers. They share a gentle kiss before she snuggles in against his shoulder to hug him. His arms enfold her in a warm embrace…making her feel as if nothing could touch her. The both of them stand there for a few moments more before he pulls back, “Let’s get this stuff in the house…I’ll need ta’ get some firewood in a little bit.” She follows him back to the bike to help unload their things as they head into the house.

As she looks around, she can see that it’s definitely a bachelor’s home…not too many decorations or nick-nacks around, just the basic furniture. The living room has a sofa and chair in front of a fireplace…a circular area rug is underneath a plain coffee table in the middle. The kitchen is quaint with a partition wall separating it from a small dining room that has a small table with only two chairs. Above them is the bedroom that is set on a balcony overlooking the living room…the bathroom is to the back of the house. Ororo begins to relax, the tones of the house are of greens and hazels…screaming nature and making her feel at home. Logan takes the packages into the kitchen to put them away while she explores the house…while he remembers to go back outside to gather the firewood. She takes the small flight of steps upstairs to see the bedroom and is amazed at the sight. The bed is king-sized with a thick hazel colored comforter on it…as well as at least eight pillows. Two floor lamps are standing in each corner while a small nightstand is right next to them. Not overly elegant, but very comfortable. Ororo sits on the edge of the bed, looking out the huge bay window in front of her…staring into that clear sky. Oh, how I would love to go flying! she thinks as she lies back on the bed...

In no time at all, she’s asleep.
