Chapter 20
Kurt lay awake in his bed for a few hours. Kitty would be gone in the morning. He knew that he would still see her. She worked for the Professor now and he would see her nearly every day, but there would be no Kitty in hallways after hours. No Kitty in her pajamas, no Kitty down the hall. Cursing under his breath, he tossed back his covers and left his room, heading down to the kitchen for a glass of milk. He ran a hand through his messy hair and scratched his chest.
A light was on in the kitchen when Kurt got there and he blinked several times before his brain told him he wasn't dreaming. A very shapely bottom and a pair of legs were displayed prominently in front of him. Familiar legs. The bottom half of Kitty Pryde was standing up the counter. Her top half was phased inside the wall. He walked in and leaned against the table, he folded his arms across his chest and waited for her to finish whatever she was doing.
Eventually, Kitty emerged from the wall she had a wrench in her hand and still stood with her back to him.
"Something wrong with the plumbing?" Kurt asked, pleasantly. Startled, Kitty spun around and slipped on the counter. Kurt reached up to steady her immediately and his hands closed on her buttocks. She squeaked and fell on top of him, dropping the wrench. Kurt caught her, stopping her fall, but let out a shout when the heavy metal tool landed on his bare foot. Losing his own balance, he fell to the floor, taking Kitty with him. They landed in a heap on the floor, limbs tangled. Kitty's nose was squashed against his ribs and her arm was trapped under him.
"Ummf." She said, rolling over. His hand clutched her bottom reflexively when her knee came a little too close to his more sensitive areas. She grabbed his wrist and tried to pull him to his feet. "You in one piece, Fuzzy?" He winced as he put weight on his foot, but was elated that she'd called him 'Fuzzy'. She'd been calling him Kurt since their argument.
"Actually, the wrench fell on my foot and I think it may have broken my toe." He said, honestly.
"Here, sit down and I'll look at it." She said, pushing him into a chair. Her manner was businesslike, but her tone was gentle. He allowed her to seat him, more because it was such an unusual treat to have her touch him again than because he had any confidence in her medical opinion. Everyone had to pass basic fist aid, so she wasn't completely inexperienced with injuries. She knelt on the floor and held his odd foot in her hand. Kurt felt a little self-concious whenever anyone examined his strange little hooved feet too closely.
Kitty bent the toe at the first joint and he winced. "Looks like a pretty big bruise, and definitely could be broken here." She said, brushing her fingers gently over the spot where the wrench had landed. "Want me to wake Dr. McCoy?" She asked.
"No, it can wait till morning." He said. She helped him to stand. "He let you off last time you delivered me injured into his med lab, I don't know how easily you'll get away again." His weak attempt at humor had a ghost of a smile tickling her li

"That was Logan, last time." Then she blushed. "So, Uh, you can make it to your room okay?"
"Yes, Katzchen, I'll make it." He hopped to the freezer and filled a plastic bag with ice. She turned to go but he spoke, stopping her at the doorway. "I hope you like the new apartment." She didn't turn around all the way, just paused and turned herd. d. Then she nodded briefly and was gone. Kurt felt a little better. They'd spoken to each other alone for the first time in weeks and it had gone better than expected. Touching her had been difficult, the fact that she fell on top of him hadn't helped either. But it was a start.
