“Kitty?” Pete Wisdom asked without looking away from the slight, pale teenager before him.
Kitty winced, her eyes closing reflexively as if she could shut out the growing drama. _Cat logic, _ she told herself. _If I can’t see them, they can’t see me… _ She felt a shift in the air around her and opened her eyes again to see Kurt’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits and fixed entirely on Pete. Forcing a smile to her lips, she pressed her palm against Kurt’s chest, her cheeks taking on a faint, pink tinge at the sudden familiarity of it, the steady thud of his heart in his chest and the radiating warmth of his body, slip of his fur under her fingers as they brushed his holo-disguised skin. “What room is he in?” she asked softly. “Logan didn’t tell me much on the phone, just that the Professor had a heart attack and Emma was somehow the one that found him, even though she was in Boston…” She heaved a sigh without realizing it, the unbidden memory of the past month’s chaos searing her tenuous hold on calm to a dangerous snapping point. She really wanted to cry and scream and bury her face in a familiar neck and beg for it all to be okay, but she could not do that. She had to be strong. People expected her to fly off the handle and get all emotional, she thought as Kurt answered her by taking her hand tentatively, one last glare at Pete the only concession he seemed to allow himself in that moment. She would show them, she thought sharply. “Did they tell you what sort of treatment he’s getting?”
Kurt shook his head, grimly smug that Pete was still near the bank of elevators. He tightened his grip on Kitty’s hand infinitesimally, pleased when she did not pull away or give him a disapproving look. “They said but,” he made a whistling noise, shrugging sheepishly. “Jean can tell you more than I can. I only understood every third word or so… I don’t speak hospital!”
Kitty laughed softly, drawing to a halt in the waiting area with Kurt. “My father died of a heart attack,” she said suddenly, her eyes riveted to the slightly open door before her, the corner of the Professor’s bed visible in the slice of light seeping from the semi-crowded hall.
“Ja, I know,” he murmured, the urge to touch her hair, brush one of the errant strands from her face, almost too strong to ignore.
“I thought he deserved it,” she continued, aware suddenly of Logan’s looming presence mere yards way, his keen hearing no doubt picking up every word that left her lips. “I…” she paused, her throat suddenly closing on the words. She had hoped he felt pain when he died, hoped he suffered a little. But the idea of the Professor suffering, even for a moment, made her stomach roil with nausea and fear.
“He’s asleep,” Jean’s voice cut into the tense silence. “But you can talk to him. You know as well as the rest of us that he can hear you in one way or another.” She moved to Kitty’s side, giving her a careful, friendly embrace. “You should get some rest soon, Kit. You look tired!”
“Thanks,” Kitty groaned, rolling her eyes. “Pete came with me and he kept me awake the entire time, just chattering.” She paused, aware of the shift in the quality of the silence around her. Curious eyes peered at her from friendly faces. She had said something wrong, something different. Ah, right, she thought. She had said the name of a man other than Kurt or Logan. She gave Jean’s arm an affectionate pat and took a deep breath. “I’ll be back in a bit.”
Jean held her tongue until Kitty disappeared into the Professor’s room, Logan following at a short distance. “Pete?” she asked Kurt, her brows going up to somewhere near her hairline. She was almost back to her old self again; even she knew that the past several months had been bad for her and those closest to her. It felt good to be normal sometimes, she thought as Kurt groaned quietly, pressing the heels of his hands over his eyes. “Don’t worry so much,” she advised, shifting as Scott came to join them. The group was convening into a tight knot, Kurt at the center as so often happened. What was it about him, she mused, that made everyone want to take care of him, even at his most boisterous? “She…”
“Needs space,” he supplied, dropping his hands to his sides. “I think I’m going to wait here,” he continued, glancing past Jean to the elevators. “Just in case…”
“Just in case nothing,” Scott cut him off. “You’ve been up for too long. Go home, get some rest… and for God’s sake get a shower! You reek!”

Pete shifted uncomfortably, his back pressed against the smooth wall of the hospital corridor. The group had changed, Kitty staying behind with the tall, pale woman dressed entirely in white. They were joined by a brightly dressed Asian girl that made him cringe thanks to her gum popping, and an older man, not middle aged but not a teenager anymore, who seemed uncomfortable with the medical surroundings but not ill at ease enough to stay away. He gave Pete a considering glance as he passed, following the others out of the elevator, and something about it unsettled the college student. He wished Kitty would hurry up but he did not want to begrudge her time with this man who was not her father but who she insisted was one of her ‘true parents.’ He could hear this new group talking in hushed tones, broken by the occasional, loud crack of the brightly dressed girl’s gum, and he wondered why Kitty never spoke about her life at the boarding school. They seemed like a tightly knit bunch, he thought, giving into the urge and sliding down the wall to sit on the floor. _I wonder why she’s so secretive… _
